Medvednica is a mountain and nature park situated just north of Zagreb and its highest peak is Sljeme, at 1,035 m. Even though it’s called “Bear Mountain”, there are unfortunately no bears left on it. Traces of human settlements found here point to the fact that humans lived here even in prehistoric times.

Medvedgrad, a medieval fortress which has been here since the 13^th ct has inspired many legends, the most famous one being about an evil Black Queen and her well. There are even legends saying that there are secret underground tunnels leading from Medvedgrad to Upper City in Zagreb. The fortress was abandoned after an earthquake damaged it severely in 1590. It was renovated in the 20^th ct and it now offers one of the best views of Zagreb and its surroundings. It’s a very popular weekend destination, especially during winter, for two reasons: the snow stays here for more than three months, and it’s sunnier than in Zagreb because there’s no smog. There are many marked hiking trails and various mountain lodges where you can take a break, warm up and enjoy some of the traditional foods of the area. The most popular cooked meal in winter is bean stew.

Sljeme is famous for its ski centre. Even if it does snow, additional artificial snow is added to improve the skiing experience. A restaurant, a hotel and tourist apartments are some of the facilities you can rest at while visiting Sljeme.

You can reach Medvedgrad by taking the 102 bus from Britanski trg (trams 6, 11), and getting off at Šestinska crkva stop, and then walking along hiking trail no. 12.

You can take the 128 bus from Črnomerec (trams 2, 6, 11) if get off at the last stop and then walk to Medvedgrad.

The ticket costs 15 kn and opening hours change.

You can reach Sljeme from Mihaljevac (tram 8) by taking the 140 bus that will take you straight to Tomislavov dom mountain lodge and hotel located at Sljeme.
