Igor Rudan

Igor Rudan is a Professor of International Health and Molecular Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, UK. He is the Director of the Centre for Global Health and the WHO Collaborating Centre. He graduated from the Zagreb University of Medice, Croatia, in 1995; obtained a Masters in Anthropology (1997) and Epidemiology (1999); a PhD in Public Health (1998) and Genetics (2005); has published 500+ research papers and 9 books, receiving >120,000 citations. Hr has been awarded 30+ national and international recognitions. He has led 29 research grants totalling about GBP 28 million; he founded the Croatian Biobank “10001 Dalmatians” (in 2001), contributing to the discovery of biomedical role for >2,000 human genes. In international health efforts to reduce global child mortality, Igor served as a consultant of the WHO, UNICEF, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The World Bank, Save the Children and others. He developed the CHNRI method, and the EQUIST, PLANET and PATHS tools, used to prioritise investments in global health. He founded the Croatian Centre for Global Health (in 2008), the Edinburgh University Global Health Society (2011), the "Journal of Global Health" (in 2011), WHO's Collaborating Centre in Edinburgh (in 2013) and the Centre for Global Health in Edinburgh (in 2015). In 2007, had the greatest increase in the number of citations in the world within his field, according to the ISI/Thomson Reuters; he obtained "highly cited researcher" status (2015-2019). He received the Wellcome Trust's International Research Development Award (2002), the "Scientist of the Year" Award in Croatia (2005), Affiliation with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2012) and The Chancellor's Award (2012). Igor is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE). He is listed among the "Croatian Persons of the Year" by all three major Croatian newspapers. In 2017, he completed a documentary series "Survival: The Story of Global Health", seen by more than 100,000 viewers on YouTube and 1 million on TV. He published popular science books "The Exact Colour of the Sky: The Story of Science" (2017); "Evil Air: The Story of Medicine" (2018); and "In the Land of Clans: The Story of Adaptation; all becoming No. 1 national bestsellers in Croatia. He holds dual citizenship of the United Kingdom and of Croatia.
