Joe Orovic

Joe Orović left his native New York City in 2013 for his ancestral home on the Dalmatian island of Iž to make olive oil, catch fish and continue a decade-long career as a journalist. (Guess which one he’s having trouble with.)

His work has appeared in The New York Times, Popular Science Magazine, Islands Magazine, Business New Europe, and you may have also heard his voice on BBC Radio once or twice.

Joe thinks Croats use Pelinkovac as part of some elaborate national joke, forcing visitors to claim bile tastes delicious. Mixing it with tonic doesn’t help.
