Welcome to Total Hvar

Welcome to the island of Hvar, one of the most magical corners of the planet. Known as Croatia's premier island, the sunniest in all year, one of the world's most beautiful, the island with the most UNESCO heritage in the world (and that doesn't include the oldest public theatre in Europe), Hvar is an island with something for everyone. Its wines are exported all over the world, from California to China, its healthy Mediterranean diet part of UNESCO heritage. Get lost in the sailing paradise that is the Pakeni islands, cycle the roads world champions use for winter training, kayak to the hidden coves. Immerse yourselves in history in the historic towns and villages dating back thousands of years, and after another hard day at the beach, check out some of the most vibrant nightlife on the Adriatic.

2018 sees 150 years of organised tourism in Europe, just one more thing that started on Hvar, with the founding of the Hvar Healthy Society in 1868. Join us on a journey of exploration of this fabulous slice of paradise. Total Hvar was founded in October 2011. Now in its 7th year, it is established as the prime and most reliable source of information about the island. If you would like to write for Total Hvar about any topic of this great island, please contact us on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. The island is constantly changing, so if you come across any outdated information on the site, or have something new which you think should be featured, please contact us.

Enjoy your time on Hvar!

Zagreb Festival of Lights, Your Full Guide for 2023's Edition

March 15, 2023 - The fifth edition of the innovative Zagreb Festival of Lights kicks off tonight - where to find the magic around the Croatian capital. One of the things I really like about tourism in Zagreb as opposed to the coast is that there are four distinct seasons. If there is one year-round tourism destination in Croatia, Zagreb is it, at least in my opinion. And not only that, but the way certain seasons are introduced is quite spectacular and lifts the mood in the city considerably.  The best example of that, of course, is Advent in Zagreb,…

'Our Responsibility' Campaign Provides Recyclable Ashtrays for Beaches on Hvar, Vis, and Šolta

August 5, 2020 – Cigarette butts are a bigger problem for the environment than we think. That’s why an organisation named FLAG Škoji launched a campaign to reduce their numbers in the sea by providing recyclable ashtrays for beaches. The Fisheries Local Action Group Škoji, or FLAG Škoji for short, is an organisation that operates on the islands of Hvar, Vis, and Šolta. Earlier this season, they decided to launch the “Our responsibility “campaign to raise awareness about environmental protection, especially by the sea. The campaign was launched in cooperation with the cities and municipalities of the area in which…

Lockdown at the Quaich Experience: A Scottish View from Hvar

How does a Scottish lockdown on Hvar look? The view from the Quaich Experience in Vrbanj through the eyes of owner Chris Connor.  Mick and I left the UK in 2009 and created The Quaich from an old ruin which had not been lived in since WW1II, the Quaich Experience. With hindsight I’m not sure I would do it again but we finished up with not a bad place to spend this recent lockdown!  I know our children are happy we are here on Hvar rather than back in UK at this time.  But how I miss them! Vrbanj is…

By Popular Demand in Pitve: Klapa Samoana at Dvor Dubokovic Tonight

July 18, 2019 - After their fantastic performance of top of the island at Hvarcienda, Samoan singing sensations will perform in Pitve tonight at Dvor Dubokovic. What happens when you have a friend on Hvar who was born in New Zealand, has his own restaurants, and then hears that the world's only Samoan Dalmatian klapa group performed on Hvar, and your friend missed it? The Season is Starting in Jelsa: Mojito Opening Party Tomorrow

There are certain events which signal change in the calendar year. During my many years in Jelsa, one of those was the opening of popular cocktail bar Mojito, which sits in a gorgeous waterfront location in the harbour looking across to Jelsa's picturesque old town. Mojito is known for its lively and innovative tourism programme throughout the summer, and it is arguably the most proactive business in trying to attract visitors to the town with its events.  A great night venue, I actually prefer Mojito during the day, a great place to chill with a cocktail or two, with the…
