While the summer is slowing down and we find the hot heat more bearable, there has always been something special about September: it is one of the best months for outdoor markets around the world.
Many of us either frequent or encourage a stop at the local outdoor markets we have in place throughout the whole of Croatia. Sure, some are larger like Dolac Market in Zagreb and Pazar in Split, but we guarantee you won’t be hard pressed to find fresh picked produce for sale at your disposal throughout Croatia.
Dobra Hrana helped us out this time around in naming the best of what is in season for the month of September. Here's to food shopping:
Pears: Here’s an idea, when cooked in a light sugar syrup or wine they become perfectly soft.
Apples: Apples should be worshiped in all possible ways. In addition to the apple pie, how about apple strudel or apple pita?
Green Beans: All types of green beans are good. Use them in salads or soups but definitely take advantage of these while they’re hot.
Eggplant: Elongated purple, white, yellow and purple stripes or thin, all eggplant is delicious and a good substitution for meat.
Cucumbers: Most often used for salads, you could also use cucumbers for summer stews and cold soups.
Corn: The king of all the street corners, it’s no wonder why corn has been flourishing in Croatia all summer.
Peppers: Stuffed? Stewed? In a salad? You know how much Croatians love peppers, and we can use peppers in any which way possible. Take advantage of them stuffed while they’re still in season!
Tomatoes: Well this is an easy one, but also a fleeting one. Be sure to use up your tomatoes for Dalmatian specialties like šalša.
