Fritule, a staple at any Croatian Christmas table, is delicious, addicting, and the perfect holiday treat.
Fritters (or more commonly known to us in Croatia as “fritule”) are most commonly prepared in Dalmatia during Christmas time, and if you’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a Christmas Eve in Dalmatia, you’ll know fully well that the air is thick with smells of this tasty treat.
Here is a recipe that is proven to win over the hearts of those not only in Dalmatia and Croatia, but all over the world. The recipe was provided by Dalmacija News on 24 December 2016.
There are many recipes for this favorite dessert, and this time we bring you a tried and tested method for the best fritters.
Ingredients:
400 grams of flour
2 yoghurts (liquid)
3 eggs
80 grams of sugar
a little bourbon vanilla
grated lemon peel and orange
baking powder
2 tablespoons of brandy
a pinch of salt
one grated apple
raisins (optional)
powdered sugar (for sprinkling)
Mix all of the ingredients together and heat up a good pan for frying. Once bubbles begin to form in the mixture, you can start frying. Dollop balls of the mixture from a spoon into the hot oil and scoop out when done! Sprinkle the fritters with powdered sugar for an added touch.
Some tips: In this recipe there is no yeast, instead replacing the yeast with yogurt and baking powder. The lemon peel and orange are added for flavor while the grated apple you will not taste in texture due to the softness of the fritters. Adding a bit of brandy into the mixture not only gives a special flavor, but it also prevents excessive absorption of oil since they are deep fried.
