ZAGREB, 26 March 2022 - The number of students from Chile attending university programmes in Croatia has doubled this year since the previous school year, and Croatia can expect even more Chilean undergraduates after the election of Gabriel Borić, who has Croat roots, as the president of that South American country.

This academic year, there are 45 Chilean students enrolled in the ongoing semester course of Croatian Language and Culture provided by Croaticum Centre in Zagreb.

Croaticum, established in 1962 as the Centre for Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language, is the oldest and largest institution engaged in teaching, research and description of Croatian as a second and foreign language. It is part of the Department of Croatian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb.

In the last five years, 163 students from Chile have attended Croaticum programmes.

In Chile, a country with 19 million inhabitants, there are about 400,000 ethnic Croats, who make up 2.4% of the total population.

The newly-elected president Gabriel Boric is a descendant of Croatian emigrants, and his great grandfather arrived in Chile from the Croatian island of Ugljan off Zadar.

Lector for the Croatian language at the University of Magallanes in Punta Arenas, Kristina Barišić, has said that Boric's election has contributed to a growing interest of the Chilean general public in Croatia.

This was also an encouragement for Croatian expat communities, she told Hina.

Two undergraduates of that university, Makarena Mansilla Carrasco and Javiera Astorga Vodanić, are among the current students of the ongoing semester course of Croatian Language and Culture at Croaticum Centre in Zagreb.

Makarena has told the ITV Patagonia broadcaster that she was highly motivated to get better knowledge of the culture of Croatia.

This 26-year-old student of psychology has received a scholarship of the Croatian government and agency for mobility and EU programmes for the continuation of her education in Croatia.

Javiera, who enrolled in the Nutrition and Diet at the Health Sciences Department of the Punta Arenas university, says that the possibility of being awarded the scholarship for education in Croatia has given an additional impetus to her to learn the Croatian language.

Javiara, 23, who is currently staying in a student dorm in Zagreb, admits that the stories that Croatian is difficult to learn have additionally motivated her.

ZAGREB, 4 March (2022) - Croatian President Zoran Milanović on Friday spoke on the phone with Chile's President-elect Gabriel Boric on the centuries-old ties between the two countries and accepted Boric's invitation for a visit, Milanović's office said in a press release.

Milanović once again congratulated Boric on the election victory and regretted that he will not be able to attend the March 11 inauguration.

The two said the Croatian community plays an important role in the social and the political life of Chile. Thanks to that community, Croatia and Chile have had centuries-old close ties, they added.

Milanović and Boric exchanged views on the current situation in the world, with emphasis on the crisis in Europe.

The Croatian company Include from Solin has strengthened its exports, entered the Polish and even the Chilean markets, a new investment round is on its way, and of course greater production and employment will naturally follow that.

As we reported recently, during the first quarter of 2019, this remarkable Croatian company from Solin recorded some excellent export performance, and it seems that Include is just going from strength to strength.

As Marta Duic/Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 7th of April, 2019, the amount of orders placed, when compared to just one year ago during the first quarter of 2018, increased by a massive 109 percent to 2.3 million kuna, while Include's total income increased by an equally impressive 115 percent.

"The first quarter is always frozen in our [type of] business. So far, we haven't achieved significant results during Q1, as plenty of markets are still covered in snow, and the first installations take place during the spring. But the first quarter of this year has been the best quarter ever since we've been doing business,'' stated Include's founder and director, Ivan Mrvoš, before going on to reveal everything Include has been busy doing since the beginning of 2019 alone.

This includes a new two-year distribution agreement with Deutsche Telekom, featuring fifty global markets; the sale of 44 Steora smart benches, a move worth more than 1.1 million kuna, and the opening up of the Polish market.

Our recent article on Include's success reports on the fact that these Croatian smart benches have been delivered to numerous other European countries, such as to Italy, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and to Spain. In February, a new order came from Montenegro, and then new doors outside of the European continent opened up to Include, and a new market was ''cracked'', that of the very distant Chile.

"That's how we managed to arrive to the last possible continent. I'm not counting the Antarctic," smiled Mrvoš. The month was completed with the deliveries of 27 smart benches to Greece, Ireland, Israel, Poland, Italy and Hungary. March resulted in orders for a new product - Monna cyclo benches for Dublin.

Include's entrance onto the Chilean market marks a new achievement for the Croatian company, whose products are gradually finding themselves leaving Europe and spreading further and further across the world.
