November 5, 2022 - The Croatia women's handball team opened the EHF EURO 2022 with a loss to Norway in Ljubljana on Friday night. 

The Croatia women's handball team started the 15th EHF EURO in Ljubljana with a defeat. In the 1st round match of Group A, they lost to Norway 23:32. It was the meeting of the European gold and European bronze medalists from the last European championship in Denmark two years ago. Norway has won 13 consecutive European titles.

Croatia was without several significant players and opened the match against the eight-time European champions in the following lineup: Ivana Kapitanović was in goal, Lara Burić was on the right, and Paula Posevec was on the left. Ana Debelić held the line, and Kristina Prkačin, Valentina Blažević, and Dora Krsnik played in the outside positions. The coach made only one change: Katarina Ježić in defense and Valentina Blažević in the attack.

Both teams were nervous at the beginning. The first goal was scored only at the end of the 3rd minute. Croatia scored its first goal in the 4th minute thanks to Dora Krsnik.

It was clear from the beginning that Croatia would have many problems with Norway's defense. After only ten minutes, Norway was up by three points (2:5). Croatia's defense remained solid but missed several clear chances at goal in the first half. 

In the 22nd minute and the 29th minute, Croatia came to one goal behind (9:10, 14:15). Norway woke up, going back to plus two (14:16) at the half. 

Croatia opened the second half with a 3:1 series. Then, in the 33rd minute, Croatia equalized at 17:17. Unfortunately, Croatia made several technical mistakes and opened the door for Norway to go ahead by three - 18:21. Coach Nenad Šoštarić, therefore, asked for a timeout. 

Croatia's play started to drop. Norway's transition and quality took precedence and went up by five goals (21:26). 

In the 52nd minute, Norway was already up by seven goals. Croatia went 11 minutes without scoring a goal. The European champions routinely brought the match to an end and achieved a convincing 23:32 victory. 

With four goals, the top scorer for Croatia was Stela Posavec. Paula Posavec, Tena Japundža, Dora Kalaus, Ana Debelić and Valentina Blažević scored 3 each. Norway's Nora Mork was the best with eight goals. Henny Reistad scored seven and was also chosen as the best player in the match.

Croatia will face Hungary next on Sunday, November 6, at 6:00 pm.

October 16, 2022 - After a thrilling second half that went goal for goal, the Croatia handball team beat Belgium 30-27 in Hasselt as part of the EHF EURO 2024 qualifiers. 

After beating Greece in the 1st EHF EURO 2024 qualification round, a new challenge awaited the Croatia men's handball team. On Sunday, Croatia played in Hasselt against Belgium, a national team that has made great strides in the last few years and is rapidly approaching major competitions.

Hrvoje Horvat took 18 players to Belgium. He decided to spare Ivan Pešić, Veron Načinović, and Vlada Matanović. The first two missed the first match, and instead of Vlado Matanović, Horvat took Luka Lovre Klarica to Belgium. 

Qualifications for EURO 2024 began for Croatia on October 12 against Greece. The 2024 EHF European Men's Handball Championship will be hosted in Germany from  January 10 to 28, 2024. This will be the 16th handball Euros and the third to feature 24 national teams.

June 27, 2022 - After the Croatia junior beach handball team brought home the gold medal just one week ago, the senior Croatia beach handball team recorded their third world title and 30th medal total after winning the 2022 Men's Beach Handball World Championships in Greece!

The Croatia men's senior beach handball team took home the title at the World Championships in Heraklion on Sunday! 

In the final match, Croatia was better than Denmark 2-0 (24-22, 21-18) in sets and thus secured their third world title and the 30th medal for Croatia beach handball.

After six days of competition and nine wins in nine games, Lucian Bura was named the best right-winger and the best scorer of the championship.

This year's World Championships final was a replay of last year's final at the European Championships, but this time with a happy ending and Croatia's victory.

Denmark tried to catch up and get closer to Croatia to bring the game to a penalty shootout, but they could not threaten the extremely collected Croatia throughout the tournament.

"The final match, the only match in which you have nothing to lose, and you can only win. Against Denmark, it was exactly as we imagined, challenging and on one ball. 

This time it turned out that we reacted excellently. They respected our agreements, and we responded skillfully defensively, especially Valentino and Jurić, who agreed and made it easier for our goalkeeper in the defense.

This is our third title, something we always strive for. I always have the feeling that gold is coming home, and we had that feeling throughout the tournament. And all credit to the boys for a great game," pointed out Croatia's coach Mladen Paradžik.

"A tough match, a match decided by details, literally small misses. In the first set, we missed a lot - maybe two, three shots, maybe one more for them, and we played maybe a better defense, which brought us victory.

We were both nervous in the second set, and it was clear that it was the final, but the last couple of defenses were great; Domi picked up something and, in the end, I think, a well-deserved victory.

Of course, it is a great success, especially after the junior national team also won the title a few weeks ago. An excellent three weeks in Greece for Croatia handball," commented Nikola Finek, a Croatia national team member who recorded an outstanding performance at the World Championships.

May 15, 2022 - The Croatia deaf handball team won the gold medal at the Deaflympics in Caxias do Sulu, Brazil, beating Germany 32-21 in the final! This is the fifth gold medal for the Croatia handball team at the Deaflympics and the 17th total from major competitions. 

The rhythm was slow in the first half on both sides, but Croatia was somewhat better, which, thanks to the outside line in which Lušić and Glumac played very well, managed to take the lead in the middle of the half with three goals. Šagovac defended well again with eight saves, one of which was a 7-meter throw.

We already knew the winner in the first three minutes of the second half. Three goals by Bošnjak and one by Glumac put Croatia ahead by seven goals which delighted more than 2,000 spectators at the final. Bošnjak led the Croatia national team with ten goals, followed by Glumac with six and Ilija Perak and Lušić with four each.

After the game, top scorer Tomislav Bošnjak said that the start was nervous with a lot of technical errors, but even with such a game, they ended the half with a three-goal advantage.

"At halftime, we agreed to start strongly from the beginning, which was achieved, and the difference only grew to the final 11-goal advantage," added Bošnjak.

The Croatia men's deaf handball team is one of Croatia's most trophy-winning teams. This is their 17th medal in major competitions. Winning this gold brings their Deaglympics medal count to 8 (five gold, one silver, and two bronze), with seven European (five gold, one silver, and one bronze) and two World Championship medals, both gold.

Serbia won third place at the Deaflympics. In the women's part of the tournament, Denmark finished first, Turkey was second, while Brazil won bronze. 

Croatia won a total of four medals at the Deaflympics - three gold and one silver in Caixas do Sulu. In addition to handball, taekwondo fighter Matea Kolovrat and javelin thrower Laura Štefanac won gold medals, and taekwondo fighter Petra Goleš won the silver.

April 17, 2022 - Although Croatia practically qualified for the 2023 World Handball Championships after beating Finland earlier in the week, they confirmed their spot in Sweden and Poland next year with another victory in the return match in Varaždin on Saturday night. 

Croatia defeated Finland 21:34 in the first match of the 2nd round of qualifications for the 2023 World Championships and played the return match in Varaždin on Saturday, winning 36:22. The most efficient player was Marino Marić with 7 goals. Filip Glavaš added 6, Marin Jelinić 4, Halil Jaganjac and Tin Lučin 3 each, and Domagoj Duvnjak, Igor Karačić, Veron Načinović, Luka Cindrić, Davor Ćavar and Luka Lovre Klarica 2 each. Leon Šušnja scored one goal. Matej Mandić recorded 8 saves and Marin Šego recorded 5 in goal. 

With another convincing victory, Croatia sends a message to the handball world that it is back on track and ready for new challenges. Coach Hrvoje Horvat had another opportunity to test out some of the young forces that have had to jump in after a series of injuries. Thus, Luka Lovre Klarica, Mateo Maraš, Veron Načinović, Dominik Kuzmanović, or Matej Mandić will get playing time with Croatia again.

Croatia has never missed the World Championships. Croatia's first appearance was 22 years ago in Iceland in 1995, when they won the silver medal. Croatia went on to win four medals after that - one gold (Portugal 2003), two silver (Tunisia 2005, Croatia 2009), and one bronze (Spain 2013). The 2023 World Championships in Sweden and Poland will be their 15th appearance, and as Croatia, Denmark, and Norway will host the 2025 World Championships, Croatia has already qualified for their 16th tournament. 

Interestingly, Croatia has also never lost at the Varaždin Arena. They played in the 2012 Olympic qualifiers there for the first time and recorded three victories: Japan 36:22, Chile 35:15, Iceland 31:28. The last performance was in the qualifications for the European Championship 2016 against Norway when Željko Babić was on the bench. Croatia celebrated 31:25. 

The World Championships are scheduled for January 11 to 29, 2023, and will feature 32 national teams. Hosts Poland and Sweden, world champions Denmark and France, Spain, Norway, Belgium, Bahrain, Qatar. Iran, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, and South Korea have already qualified.

April 14, 2022 - The Croatia men's handball team defeated Finland 21:34 in the first leg of the 2nd round of the 2023 World Handball Championship qualifiers.

Croatia has thus made a big step toward securing a spot in that competition and plays the return match in Varaždin on Saturday, April 16 at 6 pm.

Of the 18 players brought to Finland, coach Hrvoje Horvat left Matej Mandic and Veron Nacinovic in the stands. It is worth reminding that Croatia was left without David Mandić, Željko Musa, Zvonimir Srna, Ivan Čupić, Luka Šebetić, Marin Šipić, and Ivan Martinović before these two qualifying matches due to injuries.

Croatia opened the match with the following line-up: Marin Šego in goal, Marin Jelinić and Filip Glavaš on the wings, Marino Marić as the pivot, and Domagoj Duvnjak, Luka Cindrić and Luka Lovre Klarica on the outside positions. There was only one change in defense-attack, Marino Marić - Leon Šušnja.

Croatia started calmly and used four of the first five attacks to take the 2:4 lead after only six minutes. 

Domagoj Duvnjak pushed forward, resulting in a series of mistakes for Finland. Thus, in the 12th minute, Croatia doubled its advantage to 4:8. After the first quarter, they could have been up by 8 or 9 points, but it was 6:10. 

Horvat started with a series of substitutions. Igor Karačić, Vlado Matanović, and Tin Lučin entered, and Marko Mamić also defended. Croatia made good use of Finland's exclusions, and at the end of the 20th minute, Croatia was up by 6 goals - 7:13. However, Croatia went without a goal for five minutes, and Finland was helpless against Marin Šego (10 saves).

At halftime, Croatia was up by seven goals (9:16), and 8 Croatia players were among the scorers.

Finland did well in the second half. They came to minus 5 with two quick goals and forced Croatia to get serious. Croatia responded with two goals by Filip Glavas, one from seven meters, and quickly calmed down the growing ambitions of the hosts.

After 13 minutes of play, Croatia went up by 10 (15:25) with the first goal by Marko Mamic. As expected, Horvat started several new changes to give all players the opportunity in the match. The young Dominik Kuzmanović was in goal. Croatia's advantage grew from attack to attack until the final 21:34. Along with the excellent Marin Šego, who had 12 saves, the top scorer for Croatia was Filip Glavaš, with eight goals from 10 attempts. Luka Cindrić scored six and was chosen as the best player for Croatia.

April 1, 2022 - The Euro 2024 handball qualifiers have been announced after a draw held last night in Berlin. Croatia was drawn into Group 5 and will play against the Netherlands, Greece, and Belgium from October 2022 to April 2023.

A draw of qualifying groups for the 2024 European Championship hosted by Germany was held in Berlin on Thursday night. The EURO is scheduled for January 10-28, 2024, and will be played in six German cities: Dusseldorf, Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg, Manheim, and Munich.

An earlier placement at the European Championship was secured by Germany as the host and the medal winners at the last (this year's) European Championships: Sweden, Spain, and Denmark. Thus, for the second qualifying phase, there were a total of 32 teams that were drawn from four "pots" in eight strong groups. Croatia was placed in the first "pot". Russia and Belarus were not in the draw due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but their places were taken by Georgia and Luxembourg, while Kosovo and Serbia cannot be in the same group.

First, the teams from the fourth "pot" were drawn, each team in one group and so on until the last, first "pot". Croatia thus drew group 5, along with the Netherlands, Greece, and Belgium.

The complete qualification draw, on the other hand, looks like this:

With four previously placed national teams, we come to the number 24, which is the final number of teams that will ensure their appearance at the European Championships in 2024.

March 29, 2022 - The Croatia handball squad for the upcoming 2023 World Championship qualifiers against Finland has been named. Croatia will play the first match away on April 13 and in Varaždin on April 16. 

After the recent national team gathering in March, the Croatia men's senior national team will get together again in April. During the upcoming EHF week from April 11 to 17, 2022, the second round of qualifications for next year's World Championships will be played. Croatia is also participating in the second round of qualifications.

Croatia will meet Finland in the 2023 World Championship qualifiers. The first match will be hosted in Vantaa, on April 13, 2022, at 18:00. The return match will be played at Arena Varaždin, on April 16, also at 18:00.

Coach Hrvoje Horvat announced the list of players for the upcoming matches. There are 21 players on Horvat's list and nine more on the reserve list.

March 23, 2022 - 41-year-old former Croatia handball pivot Igor Vori has come out of retirement to join German Bundesliga club Fuchse Berlin!

The celebrated Croatia handball player Igor Vori will play handball again after almost three years! On Tuesday, he signed a contract with the German Bundesliga club Fuchse from Berlin, reports Sportske Novosti.

Fuchse striker Johan Koch from Denmark is seriously injured, and the German club sent an offer to Igor Vori, who accepted it, even though he has not played handball for almost three years.

Vori was the director of the Croatia national handball team. From June to October 2020, he was also the coach of PPD Zagreb, and he was recently named the coach of the Croatia junior national team.

Vori has 246 appearances for Croatia. He became the Olympic champion with Croatia in 2004, was the best player of the 2009 World Championships, and won the Olympic bronze in London in 2012. From 2009 to 2013, Vori played in the Bundesliga for HSV Hamburg. The 2.03-meter-tall pivot also played for Zagreb, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain.

Board member Stefan Kretzschmar spoke about Vori's arrival: 

"We were thinking about how we could make up for the absence of Johan Koch. As the transition period closed in February, only players who did not previously have a contract or played were allowed to be brought in. The choice is, of course, limited. I talked to some pivots on the phone, and Igor Vori immediately said he wanted to help. His readiness was also decisive. We get a very experienced player who can relieve Mijaj Marsenić. We get a great player for the tasks ahead. I would also like to thank Bob Hanning for making this transfer possible."

Füchse coach Jaron Siewert is also satisfied.

"Some at the club know Igor, and I've only heard positive things about him from them," Siewert said.

March 15, 2022 - The Croatia handball team has gathered in Varaždin to prepare for the upcoming 2023 World Championship qualifiers against Finland.

In the week when European national teams will play the first round of qualifications for the 2023 World Championships hosted by Sweden and Poland, the Croatia men's senior handball team will train in Varaždin. The national team gathered on Monday at 11:00 am at the Westin Hotel and, after antigen testing, extended their trip to the Turist Hotel in Varaždin, where they will stay until Sunday, March 20.

Coach Hrvoje Horvat invited 22 players to this gathering. But, due to injuries, Marin Šipić, Ivan Martinović, and Marko Mamić dropped out of the lineup, so there will be 19 players in Varaždin. The coach has not invited anyone from the list of reserves, which includes ten players.

Several players on this list missed the European Championships in Hungary for various reasons. There are also many young talented players, some of whom we saw in significant roles at the last big competition and some that will get the opportunity to prove themselves to the coach for a potential spot on the next list before the 2023 World Championship qualifiers against Finland 

In addition to the coach and his first associate Ivan Balić, there are several new professional staff members. Ivan Stevanović, or "Stivi," is the new goalkeeper coach. Šime Tomašević has been appointed fitness trainer. The new/old physiotherapists are Željko Kercel and Filip Šimunović. Along with psychologist Sivia Juratovac, who has been working with the A national team for some time, the new doctor with Krešimir Rotim is Domagoj Gajski, who has been with the women's team for years.
