Zagreb Sisak Highway to be Completed by February 2024 Deadline

April 4, 2023 - Work on the construction of the last unbuilt section of the Zagreb Sisak highway, A11, from Lekenik to the Sisak intersection, with a length of 10.9 kilometers, is progressing well, so completion is expected in February next year, it was announced on Monday during the visit of members of the government to the construction site.

As 24Sata writes, in addition to the construction of the highway section to the Sisak junction, work is also underway on the connecting road to Sisak. The same goes for the Petrovec, Sela, and Greda overpasses and the Odran bridge at the entrance to Sisak.

The President of the Croatian Highways Administration, Branko Huzjan, informed the Deputy Prime Ministers, Oleg Butković and Tomo Medved, and the Minister of Planning, Construction and State Property, Branko Bačić, that about 50 percent of the earthworks have been completed, infrastructure facilities are being built on the section, and the access road to Sisak, and by all accounts, the planned completion date of February 2024 will be met.

So far, 36 of the planned 47.5 kilometers of highway have been built and are in operation. The contractors were put to work on the final section at the end of February 2022, with a deadline of two years. The total value of the works is around EUR 38.3 million, with expert supervision worth slightly more than half a million EUR. Six road crossings with overpasses and other infrastructure are currently being built on the highway. The work is carried out by the Business Association of Colas Croatia and Geotehnika.

Croatian Roads is working on the connecting road project from the Sisak junction to the entrance to the city. The project also includes a connecting road from the Staro Pračno roundabout to the Odra bridge and from the Odra bridge to the junction with Zagrebačka Street in Sisak, 3.2 kilometers in length.

The completion of the highway will represent a traffic and economic lifeblood not only in Sisak but also in the Banovina area. Namely, with the construction of the Žažina junction, part of the traffic will be directed towards the central and southern parts of the county, improving the road connection quality between Petrinja, Glina, and Topusko.

Minister Butković expressed his satisfaction with the dynamics of the works and mentioned that all the advantages of the new highway would be fully apparent in the next tourist season. Minister Medved called the highway a capital project for developing the entire Sisak-Moslavina County.

HAC: Croatian Snowploughs Covered 2X the Length of Earth's Circumference

February 28, 2023 - Removing snow from the road, Croatian snowploughs covered 75,000 kilometers this weekend, almost two full circles around the Earth, the circumference of which is 40,075 kilometers, Croatian Highways (HAC) reported on Monday.

As Poslovni writes, over 181 trucks with plows and spreaders cleared the snow on a thousand kilometers of highways in two days, and more than 3,300 tons of melts was sprinkled on highways, rest areas, junctions, toll points, and border crossings, according to the HAC statement.

On snowy sections, the plows worked for up to 30 hours without stopping.

HAC commented on drivers' complaints that they did not see the plows on the road during snowfall, pointing out that if the ploughs were visible to every driver, then traffic on the highway would be impossible - "that would be a collapse and an absurdity."

As soon as the plough passes a section during snowfall, a new snow cover is created, which is cleared immediately in the next cycle, emphasizes HAC, adding that there are enough working machines for all highway maintenance tasks.

Stormy and snowy weather

Only the carriageway with the approaches to rest areas is cleared in heavy snowfall. It is possible to make the highway passable only after it stops snowing.

HAC reminds of the legal obligation for winter equipment, with which most problems and delays would be significantly less, and urges drivers that if they find themselves behind ploughs, they should not overtake them but drive behind them.

They also warned against yesterday's disregard of the traffic ban for all vehicles by some drivers who took the closed section of the highway from Sveti Rok to Posedarje, which was closed from the early morning hours due to the hurricane storm.

"We can compare this to going through a red light at an intersection. In the conditions of a hurricane, the closed section cannot even be cleared because dangerous snowdrifts are created due to the wind", says HAC.

They added that because of such irresponsible drivers who ignored all prohibitions and instructions, their workers and members of the HGSS service endangered their own lives, saving people from the road until the early morning hours.

High-Traffic Last Weekend of July on Croatian Highways

July 29, 2022 - It is fully expected that the last weekend of July will be the top weekend in the year on the Croatian highways.

It's Friday afternoon, and the Croatian highways are already experiencing problems caused by the high volume of passengers in cars, trying to get to their seaside destinations as soon as possible. Croatian police posted two videos on their social media this afternoon, warning passengers of potential delays:

In those tweets, in addition to the videos, they warn the passengers that the delays are to be expected, and that they should follow all of the traffic regulations, and treat each other with respect, tolerance and patience.

Tomorrow morning we can expect the volume of traffic to be even higher, as it usually is on Saturdays. Luckily, one thing we'll almost certainly not be experiencing this year and in the future, are the problems related to crossing the Croatia - Bosnia and Herzegovina border near the Neum corridor, as most of that traffic will be directed to the freshly opened Pelješac bridge.
