Jedna Mladost joins M.I.S.O.D.I.S.’ Hybrid International School Project

April 2, 2022 - The web project M.I.S.O.D.I.S. (Multilingual International School of Dalmatia in Split) has taken another important step toward becoming a viable additional education option for internationals living in the Split region. After officially partnering with OŠ Kralja Zvonimira earlier this year, now the Split-based youth organization Jedna Mladost has agreed to support the project aimed at foreigners who want to send their kids to public school in Croatia.

Burak Canboy, a former board member at the German School in Shanghai and the driving force behind the web project M.I.S.O.D.I.S., continues his efforts to build an affordable program for international parents who wish to fully integrate their children into Croatian life. Public school OŠ Kralja Zvonimira, which hosts classes from 1st to 8th grade, has joined the project with the aim to become the first public school in the region to specialize in dealing with the needs of international children in Croatia.

In addition to the school’s own full-day program for children in grades 1 to 3, Jedna Mladost’s founders Sanja Kosor and Michael Freer have agreed to help by actively being part of the add-on program for kids in grades 4-8. Jedna Mladost will also offer additional support in their current Saturday program.

M.I.S.O.D.I.S. envisions a program that will bridge the gap between the Croatian schooling system and the IB curriculum (International Baccalaureate https://www.ibo.org/). It will first support pupils with issues they may have with the Croatian language. At the same time, it will make sure they continue their education in English and even in an additional foreign language, such as the native language of the relocated families.

On-site at OŠ Kralja Zvonimira in Solin, the program will be offered from Mondays to Thursdays in 2 shifts, allowing both morning shift students and afternoon shift students independent of the school they are visiting, to join in. The shift for afternoon students will start at 10:30 in the morning and will end after a 45-minute lunch break at 14:00 allowing the students to continue with their public school’s afternoon shift. Accordingly, the program for morning shift students will start with a lunch break after their regular school day at 13:15 and the program will end for them at 16:45. The schedule is designed to allow all children that need to travel to Solin first to still be able to arrive in time for the start of the class sessions.

Specialized and licensed teachers will offer classes in the areas of languages (especially Croatian and English), mathematics, natural and human sciences along with a daily period of mixed physical and creative activities as well as time to help catch up with schoolwork and homework. An additional educational effort will be made to harmonize the Croatian curriculum with the IB curriculum in order to allow children to continue their school careers easily should the families decide to relocate again. While the program will not be free, all parties involved have agreed to make sure it will be affordable for anyone.

In addition to the on-site program, kids in grades 4 to 8 will also be able to join various clubs and courses at Jedna Mladost, including homework club, and various courses and activities around Science, Tech, Arts, Math, Entrepreneurship, and Leadership. There will also be the opportunity to get involved in European projects, for example, this summer Jedna Mladost is taking a group of 12 children from here to Ireland for a week as part of the Erasmus program.

In order to establish how many children and families may be joining the program in September 2022, a non-binding sign-up page is online until the end of April 2022. In case there will be more sign-ups than can be accommodated, the enrollment will be made according to the order of sign-ups (first come - first served).

A meeting at the beginning of May will be organized to share ideas, take feedback, and put together a program that places integration into the Croatian community at the heart of it, alongside high-quality and well-rounded education.

Public School Partnership Designed for Foreign Children in Split Region Begins Summer 2022

February 4, 2022 - MISODIS partners with OŠ Kralja Zvonimira and trnsfr.hr to offer a hybrid model public school program tailored for expat families and foreign children in Split and its surroundings.

After starting the web project M.I.S.O.D.I.S (Multilingual International School Of Dalmatia In Split) in 2017, an important step has now been taken by partnering with the elementary school OŠ Kralja Zvonimira in Solin and agreeing on creating a welcoming place for foreign children and the families who want to move to the Split region.

The school administration of the OŠ Kralja Zvonimira elementary school in Solin has agreed with Burak Canboy of the MISODIS project to welcome foreign children to their school immediately and has agreed on the future scope of cooperation.

Until the end of May 2022, OŠ Kralja Zvonimira elementary school has agreed to review applications from foreign children (grades 1 to 8) to start visiting the school for the upcoming school year (2022/2023) even if the children are not living in the school’s district. The acceptance will be based on available space and existing class sizes and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The school offers a full-day program (from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm) for children of grades 1 to 3. Children in grades 4-8 will be on bi-weekly shifts switching between morning and afternoon programs. Children who will newly arrive in Croatia will be supported by the school with the intensive Croatian language preparation course "pripremna nastava" and MISODIS will support the parents with advice and with contacts to online teachers and tutors.

"Apart from the very good vibe and already existing experience the school has with foreign children, I was extremely impressed by the school's attitude towards implementing technical equipment and the immediate switch to online schooling to cope with the COVID-19 situation. With its motivated staff, new buildings, up-to-date equipment, kitchen facilities, and easy access from Split, Trogir, Omiš, and Sinj the elementary school OŠ Kralja Zvonimira is a perfect partner for our program," states Burak Canboy.

Ladina Putovanja d.o.o. with its VIP shuttle service trsnsfr.hr has offered to support the program with an at-cost service for families that wish to have their children picked up from home in the morning and dropped back off after school.

For the future, it is planned to also offer a full-day program for foreign children in grades 4-8 as a hybrid solution. The children will then participate in the regular public school program but would be able to stay on-site to participate in language classes and activities organized by MISODIS based on the needs of each foreign child. Additional fun activities would be made available off-site with local youth organizations. Such courses like climbing, robotics, creation of video content, art, programming, language courses, and more are already being reviewed.
