Croatian Music Festivals in 2022: Return to Normal, Full Summer Run

January 26, 2022 – Following one cancelled year and a hesitant 2021, Croatian Music Festivals in 2022 look to return to normal operations. Even before the end of January 2022, two favourite events in Tisno, Dalmatia – Defected Croatia and Dekmantel Selectors – have this week sold out all tickets!

For a whole new generation of young dreamers and visitors, Croatia is on their annual wish list because of its music festivals. Set by pristine waters and beaches, in the guaranteed sunshine of a Dalmatian summer, photos of Croatia's music festivals have travelled across the world and brought international acclaim.

In 2020, all of these music festivals (except veteran domestic events at Martinska, Šibenik) were cancelled. Even in 2021, neither full confidence nor the full schedule had returned – Ultra Europe (Split) and Love International (Tisno) remained absent.

However, if early indications are anything to go by, trust in the summertime spectaculars seems to have completely returned for Croatian Music festivals in 2022. In fact, even before the end of January 2022, two favourite events in Tisno, Dalmatia – Defected Croatia and Dekmantel Selectors – have this week announced they've sold out.

News revealed exclusively to Total Croatia News informs that the rest of the summer music festivals held at The Garden Resort, Tisno are not far behind - almost all are within sight of completely selling out all tickets.

PHOTOS: Pula Amphitheatre and Zagreb Arena Lit Red for Events Industry

September 3, 2020 - Three of Croatia's most internationally famous venues in the events industry were lit in spectacular red on Monday. Pula amphitheatre, Zagreb Arena and Fort Punta Christo were bathed in light from sunset until after dark

Three of Croatia's most internationally famous venues used by the events industry were lit in spectacular red on Monday. Pula amphitheatre, Zagreb Arena and Fort Punta Christo, also in Pula were bathed in light from sunset until after dark.

Though the change in appearance was enjoyable and visually impressive, the action was undertaken to send a strong message. It was part of a worldwide campaign to highlight the effects of Coronavirus on the events industry and those who work within it.

9262615ae00858f1c9b7.jpeg

Some of the most famous historical buildings, concert venues and event halls in the world joined the Red Alert campaign and were similarly lit on the same night.

Large public events have been put on hold over most of the world under epidemiological guidelines. Seating arrangements in theatres, conference halls, sports and music halls are simply not compatible with social distancing regulations – many such venues could not make a profit by holding events at 50% capacity.

This has affected millions around the world who work in the events industry, from musicians and performers to technicians, bookers, agents, the media, PR representatives, venue management and general staff. Freelancers operating within the events industry are some of the hardest hit and have had all of their income sources removed completely. Many who operate in the events industry are highly trained and skilled, so diversifying into other industries can be problematic.

Pula amphitheatre (also known as Pula Arena) is a massively popular open-air venue in warmer months. It holds spectacular opera, ballet and classical music events as well as hosting a film festival. Like Zagreb Arena, it attracts some of the biggest names in pop and rock music. Fort Punta Christo has become famous all over Europe and further over the last decade, thanks to the internationally renowned Outlook and Dimensions festivals. Those events were supposed to take place in Tisno, at The Garden festival site. But, along with seven further festivals due to be held there this year, they chose to cancel in order to safeguard the health of their attendees and locals.

Fort Punta Christo in Pula is widely known as a host site for international music festivals

The Croatian events industry alone is comprised of 2000 business entities, has more than 12,000 employees, and annually generates HRK 4.5 billion. Autumn/winter 2021 is the soonest estimated point at which large scale events could return to normal. The Red Alert campaign has been undertaken to highlight the plight of the events industry as many sections within it face total collapse if deprived of work until then.

Outlook Origins Unveils Final Names, Stage Programs and Barbarella’s After Parties

March 5, 2020 - The final names for Outlook Origins 2020 can now be revealed for the exciting new chapter which unfolds in the stunning Garden Resort in Tisno from July 30 to August 3, 2020.

Drum & bass icons Chase & Status and Children of Zeus are added to the opening concert, Novelist, Silkie, Coki, Goth Trad, Conducta and Sgt Pokes all line up at the main event, while 1xtra's Jamz Supernova joins the bill and Pinch's Tectonic and Rinse FM also get involved for their own impressive takeovers amongst many more big announcements.

Origins is all about curating cutting edge music for the real heads. It’s a more intimate version of the storied Outlook Festival, but at the same time, stays true to its roots with a big focus on sound system culture, beach parties, boat parties, after parties and more. Full news of the boat parties is to come with the final Early Bird ticket online, including the festival’s popular 5 for 4 group ticket offer (£96 per person).

St Michaels Fortress, Sibenik (7).jpg

The line-up for this mouth-watering event has been pulled together by 13 expert curators, and each has done a fine job of representing the various cornerstones of their own scenes. These are Calibre, D Double E, DJ Storm, Flava D, Fliptrix, Goldie, Iration Steppas, Lenzman, Mala, Mungo's Hifi, The Bug, Zed Bias and Hybrid Minds, and they have already announced huge names like  dBridge, Fabio & Grooverider, Randall, Wookie, Youngsta, Hatcha, Breakage, Doc Scott, DRS, J.Sparrow, P. Money, 6 Figure Gang (aka Dobby, FAUZIA, Jossy Mitsu,
LCY, Sherelle, Yazzus), Children of Zeus, Coops, Darwin, Horsepower Productions, Jah Shaka, N-Type and many more.

Drum & bass legends Chase & Status join the opening concert in Sibenik alongside Shy FX, Dynamite MC and Manchester duo Children Of Zeus. Spaces are limited for the unique event that kicks off the festival on Thursday 30th July - an unmissable, well-loved part of the Outlook Festival model.

On Mala’s curated stage in attendance are Silkie, Coki, Goth Trad, Sicaria Sound with Killa P, Crazy D & Sun of Selah on the mic all bringing the signature sound back to Croatia with plenty of hard-hitting and deep bass styles. Further high profile stage takeovers have been added and include Pinch's Tectonic label celebrating 15 years (with Walton being a late and great addition ahead of his new release on the label) and Rinse FM who join forces with 6 Figure Gang for a takeover of their own that is sure to get rowdy. Elsewhere excitement is building for Deadbeat + Tikiman who will present a special live dub show, while New Zealand duo Truth return for big things in 2020. The Heatwave add some of their own much loved and hugely characteristic bounce and 1xtra's Jamz Supernova joins the bill, while there will be more drum & bass from Technimatic, SCAR, Artificial Intelligence and J Majik.

Sinai-Barbarellas.jpg

A key part of this year's event will be the Barbarella's After Parties, which are available via a separate ticket on sale now as individual days, as well as part of a festival package deal and full pass. Each of these special events is powered by the peerless Sinai Sound System and will feature the likes of Dispatch and Sofa Sound going head to head for a takeover. Mala curates a heavyweight offering featuring Deep Medi family including local Egoless as well as Silkie, Sicaria Sound and a b2b from Coki and Mala, then The Bug curates his own late-night get together as well as Leeds legend and dub warrior Iration Steppas.

This is an exciting evolution in the story of Outlook and is once again set to be the most essential festival for lovers of any and all forms of bass.

Outlook Origins Festival Announces Curators, New Location and 2020 Dates

November 22, 2019 - The new Outlook Origins music festival will take place at The Garden Resort in Tisno next summer.

Outlook Origins will be music for the heads. For 2020, the festival line-up is being carefully curated by a handful of the scene's most influential artists and tastemakers such as Goldie, Flava D, Mala and more.

After a decade establishing itself as the most iconic and essential bass music event in Croatia, 2020 sees Outlook Festival open an innovative new chapter with the announcement of Outlook Origins. This all-new proposition for 2020 takes place across three special locations; The Garden Resort in Tisno for the main festival, world-famous Barbarella's for after-parties and St Michaels Fortress for an all-new and very special opening concert. Spanning genres in unprecedented style, Outlook Origins celebrates the best in drum & bass, dubstep, grime, garage, reggae and beyond with 12 world-renowned pioneers. Calibre, Goldie, Lenzman, Zed Bias, Mala, DJ Storm, Flava D, D Double E, The Bug, Iration Steppas, Fliptrix and Mungo's Hi Fi curate this special edition. Taking place from 30th July–4th August, it will reinforce the foundations on which the festival was built over 10 years ago and final Early Bird tickets are available now for just £120 +BF.

Jamie Crumpton

Over those years, Outlook has become known as an international community of like-minded music-fans who keep the celebration of sound system culture alive. It has built a reputation for offering the very best in bass music from big-name pioneers, red hot new talents and everything in between. The Outlook Curators will continue in that tradition as they represent the full spectrum of music you’d expect to find at Outlook from forward-thinking artists, pioneering labels and unconventional promoters.

The breathtaking natural bay of The Garden Resort in Tisno will be one of the settings for this year’s series of epic parties. The idyllic beach plays host to daytime beach parties unlike any other, while the infamous outlook boat parties set sail from the harbour, with lots more to be announced. Unique for Outlook Origins is the all-new opening concert in 2020, which takes place atop a fortress in Sibenik just a short drive down the coast. More will be revealed soon on that one, but for the after-parties, the world-famous Barbarellas open-air club nearby will offer plenty of opportunities for festival-goers to soak up the sound of their favourite artists, all powered by Leed’s famous Sinai sound system.

And so to the curators: an essential feature of Outlook for over a decade, it’s only right that Metalheadz head honcho Goldie is among the tastemakers joining Outlook Origins. The maverick innovator – who helped write the future of the jungle scene with landmark releases that still sound like they were kidnapped from tomorrow – has an assured reputation as one of the UK's most legendary, and lively figureheads. His Metalheadz boat parties and stage takeovers are the stuff of Outlook legend so his special touch on the 2020 programme is hugely anticipated. He is joined by long-time associate DJ Storm who made waves alongside her great friend and DJ partner Kemistry. Back in the nineties, the duo helped establish the legendary status that Metalheadz still carries today after Goldie built up label around them. To this day, Storm leads the charge for female DJs worldwide and is a true trailblazing force of nature.

Then comes The Bug, the man who mixes up dancehall, noise, grime, hip hop and dubstep into his own twisted, rib rattling new forms on labels like Ninja Tune, Hyperdub and Soul Jazz Records. A famously uncompromising artist who brings aggression, masochism, intensity and tension to his sets, he is never one to be missed. Fellow pioneer Mala has featured at Outlook Festival since day one and stands as one of the most respected artists in the game. Stirring dubstep’s musical melting pot with its most primal ingredients before it even had a name, Mala was a founding member of DMZ as well as founding one of dubstep's most established labels: DEEP MEDi. His history is tied up with Outlook so his input in 2020 is special indeed.

The North Quarter head honcho Lenzman also joins for the 2020 edition with his unique brand of drum & bass, which remains simultaneously soulful and uplifting while offering ravers a heavy-dose of bottom end. A true fan of samples, with a passion for drawing out the musicality in his selections, you’ll often hear hip-hop cuts and odes to the old school sliced within his sets. Another Outlook Festival regular and artist from the soulful end of the spectrum, Calibre is one of bass culture’s most enduring artists. Forging his own distinctive brand of drum and bass with the introduction of lyricism, Calibre has consistently pushed boundaries. A true forward-facing producer, he dips drum and bass into everything from dub to techno, house to ambient and jazz and soul and the results speak for themselves: having arguably contributed some of drum & bass’ biggest anthems.

Out representing the explosive area where garage, grime and bassline music intersects, Flava D is one third of TDQ alongside Royal T and DJ Q, and an essential member of the influential Butterz label; she stands as one of the most important producers in the worlds of bass and garage, embodying the future of UK bass music. An innovator of the UK grime scene, the unmatched D Double E  is one of the original artists to cultivate the genre from the roots of jungle, drum and bass and garage. Fusing elements of dancehall, jungle beats and rap into his verses, he represents the true origins of grime so there’s no one who does it quite like D Double E. Next is Fliptrix, one of the most exciting and significant artists when it comes to his contributions to UKHH. The multifaceted artist is considered to be one of the hardest working heads in the scene with his focus as a solo artist also shared with being one-quarter of acclaimed outfit The Four Owls (Big Owl) and the Managing Director of High Focus Records (Zander).

Also joining will be UKG stalwart, broken beat fanatic, dub connoisseur Zed Bias who has rightly earned his status as UK legend, an indisputable originator in his own right but also as a long-standing member of our Outlook family, as well as world-famous Glaswegian selectors Mungo’s Hi-Fi from the Scotch Bonnet label and Iration Steppas, whose sound is incomparable: melding “dubs inna year 3000 style” alongside Roots, Reggae, Dancehall and everything in between.

This is an innovative and exciting new development in the rich history of Outlook that once again promises to be the best place on the planet to experience all forms of bass music.

One of World's Largest Music Festivals Coming to Pula? TZ Istria Director Optimistic

November 7, 2019 - Over the last 15 years, Tomorrowland has grown to be one of the world's largest and most notable music festivals - and we might see a version of it in Pula in the future.

Next to the Pula Arena, one might say that some of the most recognizable products of the town are its music festivals - Outlook and Dimensions. Sadly, 2019 was the final year that Outlook and Dimensions festivals would be held in Pula after they announced a relocation to Sibenik in 2020. The departure of Outlook and Dimensions was expected to be a considerable hit to Pula’s tourism, though it might not be all that bad for this Istrian city in the end. A version of one of the biggest festivals in the world could be calling Pula its new home.

Namely, Glas Istre first wrote about the possibility of Tomorrowland coming to Pula two months ago, and now the story has been confirmed by the director of the Istria Tourist Board, Denis Ivosevic.

Ivosevic told Glas Istre that he is optimistic about Tomorrowland's arrival in Pula, but that is still not a definitive confirmation that this international spectacle will come to the largest city on the Istrian peninsula. In any case, if it did happen, Pula would again be on the map of the most attractive festival destinations in the world.

Ivosevic added that a music festival, whether it be Tomorrowland or another, would surely make Pula their home.

Tomorrowland is one of the largest and most famous dance and techno music festivals in the world. The first edition took place in 2005 in the Belgian town of Boom near Antwerp, where it is traditionally held during the last weekend of July. Two years ago, the festival was visited by as many as 400,000 people, which are attracted to its mega stages and visual splendor.

Tomorrowland often ranks first in the world's top music festivals, ahead of Austin City Limits in Texas, Glastonbury, Rock in Rio, Chicago's Lollapalooza, Burning Man (Black Rock Desert, Nevada), Tennessee’s Bonnaroo, Electric Daisy Carnival in Los Angeles, Coachella, and Ultra Music Festival in Miami. Tomorrowland in Belgium, which has versions in other countries as well, could spark up a new edition in Pula.

Dimensions and Outlook Festivals Announce Move to Sibenik, The Garden Tisno

October 9, 2019 - The organizers of Dimensions and Outlook festivals announced a new location and festival term.

Everyone wondering whether the wildly popular Dimensions and Outlook festivals would continue after their stretch and Pula can now relax, for we finally have an answer.

Namely, Glas Istre reports that Croatian organizers Pozitivan Ritam announced on Tuesday that, after an unforgettable decade spent at the incredible Punta Christo Fortress, the Dimensions Festival and Outlook Festival is heading south to central Dalmatia.

The release explains that the festival dates have also changed and will no longer be held at the end of August and early September, but at the peak of the summer season, from late July to mid-August. The first names to come will be announced shortly.

The festivals will take place at three locations: the stunning St. Michael's Fortress, built on a cliff above the center of Sibenik, in the beautiful bay of The Garden Resort in Tisno, and on the open terrace of Barbarellas Discotheque, where unforgettable all-night parties will be powered by Sinai Sound System, explained Pozitivan Ritam, revealing that the Outlook Festival will undergo a name change and concept, creating "Outlook Origins", which promises a return to the original roots and foundations on which the world's largest celebration of sound system culture is built.

“After eight unforgettable years at Fort Punta Christo, we are excited to embark on the next step of the journey for Dimensions Festival. Heading down the Croatian coast, Dimensions 2020 will take place between the 13th–18th August across three stunning locations; a fortress-top Amphitheatre in Sibenik, the idyllic Garden Resort in Tisno, in addition to star lit dancing at the world famous Barbarella’s Discotheque.

Dimensions’ next chapter will be a continuation of the festival’s heritage, with the same commitment to programming, sound quality, spirit, and a continued nurturing of a close-knit community of labels and club partners will remain – adding the signature Dimensions touch to the Garden Resort.

While we leave behind our beloved fortress home, we also leave behind a number of challenges we faced that come with holding a festival in such a unique space. This change is an exciting prospect for us, giving us an opportunity to present our audience with something new, both as the Dimensions brand and for the Garden Resort – while hopefully achieving a feeling of home to those that have joined us over the years.

A slice of paradise nestled on the Dalmatian coastline, the Garden is blessed with crystal clear azure Adriatic waters, baking sunshine and star-lit night skies. It’s an intimate setting that has become a sought-after destination for a global crowd of music lovers. Located just a ten minute walk away, the local town of Tisno is a lovely fishing village, blessed with beaches, great restaurants bars and bakeries and high quality hotel and apartment options. It’s the ideal base from which to do Dimensions in style.

One of the world’s most unique nightclubs, Barbarella’s is located just a short drive from the main festival site. Boasting the stars as its ceiling, it’s a truly magical space that has to be experienced, adored by artists and festival-goers alike. Adding a Dimensions twist on the venue, Sinai Sound System will power the space - bringing with them their mighty stacks, providing warm, deep sounds the system is famous for.

We’re also delighted to announce that in 2020 we’ll be presenting a special live event alongside the festival; an opening concert in an amphitheatre in Sibenik - held on top of a fortress nestled along the coast.

Super Early Bird tickets are now on sale at £100 and hope you’ll join us for the next step of the journey next August,” Dimensions directors Jack, Joe, Johnny, Noah, and Simon wrote on Facebook

The Outlook directors also took to Facebook to share their thoughts.

“After 10 incredible years at Fort Punta Christo, Outlook Festival is delighted to reveal something brand new for 2020; Outlook Origins.

Outlook Origins sees us return to the Dalmatian coast, the region where we first started our Croatian festival adventure. In addition to the change in location, Outlook Origins will take place one month earlier: from 30th July until 4th August.

Over the last decade, the festival has grown to incredible heights and welcomed thousands of people annually from across the globe. Throughout the course of this journey, we’ve really loved building such a worldwide community. However, in recent years, we’ve wanted to revisit the original vibe, ethos and size that made the event so special. Outlook Origins will take things back to where it all began for the festival and celebrate the artists, labels, parties and genres that for us have been integral in driving sound system culture forward.

Outlook Origins will be music for the heads. For 2020, the festival line-up is being carefully curated by a handful of the scene’s most influential artists and tastemakers. Linchpins in their respective genres, these curators will represent the key foundations that made Outlook Festival what is is: Dubstep, Dub & Reggae, Drum & Bass and Jungle and Grime. A festival line-up with our heroes leading the way; working side by side to ensure the sounds remain underground.

We’ll be announcing the festival curators in the coming weeks.

In addition to the exciting developments in the artistic programming, for 2020, we’re honoured to be taking the festival to a selection of amazing locations.

Our opening concert will be held in an Amphitheatre, sat on a spectacular cliff-top fortress by the sea. St. Michael’s Fortress in Sibenik is without doubt one of the most awe-inspiring venues we have ever laid our eyes on, and the ideal location in which to begin Outlook Origins 2020.

Following an opening night in Sibenik, the festival will then run for 5 days across the stunning venues operated by The Garden. Originally located in Petrcane, The Garden was the spot where Outlook Festival began its adventure way back in 2008.

Now situated just down the coast, The Garden Tisno sits in its own private bay with an amazing beachfront, hosting a number of stages across its pine covered setting. Additional late night action will take place at Barbarella’s Discotheque, one of the world’s finest outdoor venues. To ensure the Outlook vibe and spirit is maintained, we’ll be installing the mighty Sinai Soundsystem to take us into the early hours each night.

Outlook Origins will be an intimate party, with a heavily reduced festival capacity, for the real heads of the scene. We can’t wait for you to join us."

Outlook Origins will run from July 30 to August 4, while Dimensions will follow from August 13 to August 18, 2020.
