April 4, 2022 - Ryanair Rijeka flights were canceled on Sunday without any e-mail notification or other possibilities for passengers at Rijeka Airport. A look into what happened.
On Sunday, Rijeka Airport announced three Ryanair return flights from Charleroi, London, and Stockholm. However, only the plane from Stockholm landed and took off from Rijeka airport, and the other two flights were canceled, reports Croatian Aviation.
Due to the strong wind in Rijeka on Sunday morning, flights to London and Brussels were canceled, which in itself would not be news if the problem did not arise in communication between the airline and passengers.
Namely, several passengers who were supposed to travel from Rijeka to Charleroi Airport saw that their flight was canceled. And due to the strong wind at Rijeka Airport, the Ryanair plane landed at Pula Airport instead of Krk.
At 11 am, the plane took off from Pula for Rijeka, where it was supposed to land, pick up passengers for Brussels and, with a two-hour delay, bring them to their destination in Belgium. As the wind did not calm down, the plane flew back to Charleroi without the Rijeka passengers.
About 30 passengers awaited the arrival of the plane at Rijeka Airport, and according to information from the airport, they were informed that, in the worst case, if the plane fails to reach Rijeka, they will be transported by bus to Pula and go to their planned destination from there. In the end, neither happened - Rijeka passengers did not go to Pula, and Ryanair's plane eventually failed to land in Rijeka.
Only a little later, the same story happened with the Ryanair flight between London and Rijeka. Due to the wind, the plane diverted to Pula and then took off from Pula to Stansted Airport without the passengers in Rijeka.
According to EU Regulation 261/2004, in case of flight cancellation due to bad weather conditions, passengers are not entitled to compensation but have the right to care, refund, and be redirected under similar conditions to the earliest flight to the planned destination. As Ryanair's next flight from Rijeka to Charleroi is only on April 7, passengers will probably make their trip from nearby airports, Zagreb and Zadar, from where Ryanair also operates to the airport.
However, the passengers did not receive any notification via e-mail about the flight cancellation and other possibilities, or that an additional flight from Rijeka was mentioned on Monday to transport passengers to their destinations, which was an information error.
As all this happened due to force majeure. Ryanair made the best option for itself as an airline - it canceled flights for which it knows it will not have to pay a fee of 250 euros per passenger and offered passengers the next direct flight, which is a business move. Passengers could still be transported from Rijeka by bus to Pula, from where they would travel to their destinations on the same day with a certain delay, but Ryanair did not do so due to additional costs, and above all not to jeopardize the implementation of its other scheduled flights on Sunday with just those planes.

February 25, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Flyr Oslo-Dubrovnik flights will run this summer, and Condor increases capacity on its Dusseldorf-Rijeka line.
Flyr, a new Norwegian airline based in Oslo, has announced a new line between Oslo and Dubrovnik this summer, reports Croatian Aviation.
Namely, Flyr will introduce its third flight to Croatia and the first to Dubrovnik Airport this summer. The new Oslo-Dubrovnik line will start operating on June 13 and end on August 12 this year. Two flights a week have been announced, every Monday and Wednesday, while the number of weekly rotations will increase to three from July 1, with the introduction of regular flights every Friday.
On 25 return flights in the mentioned period, Flyr offers a total of 9,450 seats between Oslo and Dubrovnik. The new route will be operated by B737-800 aircraft with a capacity of up to 189 seats in the cabin.
Recall, this airline has already announced two lines to Zadar Airport.
Furthermore, Croatian Aviation reports that Condor Airlines is introducing two routes to Rijeka this summer, from Frankfurt and Dusseldorf. In the meantime, there has been a change of aircraft to offer a significantly larger number of seats from Dusseldorf!
Instead of the previously planned A320 aircraft, which has a capacity of 180 seats, B757-300 aircraft with a capacity of 275 seats will fly to Rijeka every Wednesday, from the end of May to the end of September. This is a significant increase on the line that will soon start operating. On the second weekly flight between the two cities (every Saturday), A321 aircraft with a capacity of 220 seats will operate.
From May 21 to September 28, Condor Airlines offers 21,560 seats on the line between Dusseldorf and Rijeka.
In addition to the Condor, German Eurowings will also operate on this line from May to October. In the peak summer season, three weekly flights are expected on which A319 and A320 aircraft will operate. In addition, Eurowings offers 16,500 seats between Dusseldorf and Rijeka in the upcoming summer flight schedule.
In total, these two carriers will offer 38,060 seats between Dusseldorf and Rijeka, and direct flights are available from May to October.

February 5, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as the second EasyJet Rijeka line has been announced, connecting Kvarner and Berlin this summer.
After announcing its return to Rijeka after 15 years and establishing a regular line between London (Gatwick) and Rijeka, EasyJet now offers a second line from Rijeka Airport - a seasonal line to Berlin!
Namely, Croatian Aviation reports that from June 28 this year, EasyJet will introduce a direct line between Rijeka and Berlin, which will operate twice a week, every Tuesday and Saturday, departing from Rijeka to the German capital in the evening.
Airbus A320 aircraft have been announced on this route, which has a capacity of up to 180 passengers. Unlike the route to London announced until the end of the summer flight schedule, the Berlin line should be in service until September 3, 2022.
Eurowings thus gains competition considering that it already operates in the season between Berlin and Rijeka. This line is also chosen by many Zagreb passengers who do not have a direct flight from Zagreb to Berlin.
Recall, after fifteen years of absence, EasyJet confirmed earlier this week that it would operate with two weekly flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays between May and October 2022. Rijeka airport welcomed the news after announcing the return of Ryanair, Condor Airlines, and AirSerbia.
As EasyJet returns to Rijeka airport, the city expects the recovery of international traffic in the region and a record number of passengers arriving between May and October this year.
After many years of negotiations between Rijeka Airport and EasyJet, a consensus was reached. Furthermore, in talks with representatives of the relevant ministry, county, local units, hotels, and tourist boards, support and guarantees for promotional activities in the region were provided.
These activities are necessary to position Kvarner in the British market better, so it is planned to encourage and increase the number of arrivals from that market, which now accounts for less than 1 percent of overnight stays in Kvarner, said Rijeka Airport.
The city of Rijeka considers it necessary to reinforce its tourist offer and strategy to attract international guests after the pandemic that affected the development of the activities planned for Rijeka 2020: European Capital of Culture and the traditional carnival of the city canceled in both 2021 and 2022.

February 1, 2022 - An agreement was reached to once again connect the English capital with the third-largest city in Croatia, and EasyJet returns to Rijeka airport after 15 years, with two weekly flights between May and October.
Rijeka airport announced the return of the English low-cost airline to the island of Krk. After fifteen years of absence, EasyJet will connect the third largest city in Croatia with London Gatwick.
The airline also confirmed the news, adding that it will operate between May and October 2022, with two weekly flights on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
"EasyJet deserves record airport traffic"
Rijeka airport welcomed the news that after announcing the return of Ryanair, Condor Airlines, and AirSerbia, the well-known company EasyJet will also join them this year. It is one of the most important low-cost airlines in the British market, and in 2006 and 2007 it was responsible for a large part of the international air traffic at Rijeka airport.
As EasyJet returns to Rijeka airport, the city expects this year the recovery of international traffic in the region, and also a record number of passengers arriving between May and October.
More tourists from the UK are expected
They state that after many years of negotiations between Rijeka Airport and EasyJet, a consensus was reached and that in talks with representatives of the relevant ministry, county, local units, hotels, and tourist boards, support and guarantees for promotional activities in the region were provided.
These activities are necessary to better position Kvarner in the British market, so it is planned to encourage and increase the number of arrivals of guests from that market, which now accounts for less than 1 percent of overnight stays in Kvarner, said Rijeka Airport.
The city of Rijeka considers it necessary to reinforce its tourist offer and its strategy to attract international guests, after a couple of years of a pandemic that affected the development of the activities planned for Rijeka 2020: European Capital of Culture and the traditional carnival of the city being canceled in both 2021 and 2022.

January 10th, 2022 - Almost twice as many passengers traveled through Rijeka Airport in 2021 than in the previous year, with the upward trend expected to continue due to new summer lines announced for 2022
Rijeka Airport recorded 56,388 passengers in 2021. It’s an increase of almost 29,000 passengers compared to the airport traffic in 2020, reports Croatian Aviation.
Unsurprisingly, the largest number of passengers was recorded in summer months. Rijeka Airport saw over 15,000 passengers in July 2021, around 20,000 passengers in August and some 13,000 in September.
In contrast, there was very little off-season air traffic on Krk island. At present, Rijeka Airport only has two flights on its winter schedule, those of a local carrier operating from Rijeka to Osijek and Rijeka-Split-Dubrovnik.
On the upside, international airlines have lately been announcing plans to boost their existing summer lines from Rijeka and introduce new routes, so we can expect a further increase in traffic this year. It might be a while before the airport bounces back to its pre-pandemic levels; in 2019, over 200,000 passengers traveled through Rijeka Airport.
Low-cost carrier Ryanair will operate from Rijeka to London, Brussels and Stockholm twice a week starting from March 27th, 2022.
German airlines Condor and Lufthansa have announced summer lines between Rijeka and Frankfurt, once and twice a week respectively. Lufthansa and Croatian Airlines will also operate from Rijeka to Munich.
In 2021, eight Croatian airports recorded a total of 4,771,520 passengers combined. It’s a significant increase compared to a little over 2 million passengers in 2020; in the record 2019, Croatian airports saw a total of 11,376,915 passengers.

January 8, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Lufthansa Rijeka-Frankfurt flights are boosted for the 2022 summer season.
Star Alliance member and German airline Lufthansa will increase the number of weekly rotations between Frankfurt and Rijeka in the upcoming summer flight schedule, reports Croatian Aviation.
While Lufthansa has operated a regular flight between Munich and Rijeka for many years, in 2021, Lufthansa also introduced a regular line between Frankfurt and Rijeka, which was also in operation once a week, every Saturday. The company has announced operational changes to this line for the 2022 summer season.
Namely, instead of once per week, Lufthansa will operate twice a week between Frankfurt and Rijeka. The line should begin operations from Saturday, April 9, and the second weekly flight will be introduced from Wednesday, May 25. Flights on Wednesdays will take place in the evening, and on Saturdays in the morning. This will give passengers more flexibility when planning a trip to and from Kvarner, which was practically impossible with one flight a week.
A320 aircraft with a capacity of 168 seats have been announced on the route between Frankfurt and Rijeka for this summer.
Croatian Aviation adds that German Condor too will operate between Frankfurt and Rijeka in the upcoming summer season, once a week, also on Saturdays, between May 21 and September 24. Thus, Rijeka will be connected to this famous European hub by three weekly flights.
As for Munich and Rijeka, Lufthansa should operate on this route once a week in the summer, and Croatia Airlines is expected to launch three weekly flights on this route. However, we must wait to see how airlines will react to the new tender for joint advertising announced by the Croatian National Tourist Board.
Rijeka Airport is continuously recording positive announcements from airlines for this year, and several strategic partners have yet to announce their increases towards Kvarner.

Low-cost airline Ryanair is selling tickets between London and Rijeka for next summer, binging the Irish airline's second line to Rijeka next summer, reports Croatian Aviation. Recall, Ryanair also announced it would renew the Brussels and Rijeka line next summer.
Along with Brussels, Rijeka will again be connected to London by a regular line next summer. Traffic resumes on March 27, 2022. Two flights a week have been announced, every Thursday and Sunday, until late autumn - October 27, 2022.
On 62 return flights, Ryanair will offer 23,436 seats next summer between Rijeka and London. In addition, Rijeka will be connected to Stansted, an airport an hour bus ride away from central London.
In the meantime, Ryanair has announced ten more new lines to Zadar for next summer, and several more interesting lines to the Zemunik airport are expected soon.
Croatian Aviation also announced that Flydubai is increasing the number of weekly operations between Dubai and Zagreb in the second half of December.
After a long break, Flydubai returned to Zagreb Airport on September 23 this year. The airline has since operated between Zagreb and Dubai only twice a week. However, the airline will increase the number of weekly flights between the two cities in December.
From December 27, FlyDubai will increase the number of weekly operations between Dubai and Zagreb from the existing two to four flights per week. In addition to flights on Thursdays and Saturdays, Flydubai will additionally operate between the two cities on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Four flights a week are on offer until the end of May next year, and according to current announcements, Flydubai will operate on this route in the summer flight schedule. Emirates has permanently withdrawn from Zagreb Airport.
An increase in weekly flights had been planned earlier, but the company canceled certain departures.
The Zagreb flights are mainly operated by B737 MAX8 aircraft, which have a capacity of 166 passengers. As Flydubai and Emirates work closely together, Zagreb passengers can easily change flights via Dubai and continue their journey to several destinations.

November 11, 2021 - The latest flight news to Croatia with the announcement of Finnair Helsinki-Zagreb flights and new Condor flights to Rijeka and Dubrovnik.
Finnish national airline Finnair (Oneworld alliance member) announced its 2022 summer schedule, and Zagreb is on the list of new destinations, reports Croatian Aviation.
Finnair will operate regularly between Helsinki and Zagreb next summer, and the Helsinki - Zagreb - Helsinki line will be introduced on May 1, 2022. Flights will run three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. A319 aircraft with a capacity of 144 seats have been announced on the route, meaning Finnair will offer more than 22,000 seats on the Helsinki-Zagreb route from May to October next year.
Before the pandemic, Croatia Airlines operated in the summer between Helsinki and Zagreb, but the line was not in operation in 2021 and 2020 due to reduced demand.
Finnair has operated to Dubrovnik and Split in the summer flight schedule for many years, and earlier this airline had Pula on its destination map. Finnair's arrival in the Croatian capital is great news for all those who normally travel between the two cities, as well as for those who will continue their journey to destinations in Asia with this airline.
Furthermore, Croatian Aviation reports that German leisure airline Condor announced two new routes to Croatia.
Condor Airlines announced a series of new routes from Düsseldorf, which is the focus this winter. For now, several new routes have been announced for next year's summer flight schedule, including two to Croatian airports.
Condor plans to operate to three Croatian airports next summer. Split is already a traditional destination and will have three routes next year - from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, and Munich.
Condor will introduce two new routes - between Düsseldorf and Rijeka, twice a week, and one flight a week between Düsseldorf and Dubrovnik.
Croatian Aviation adds that A320 aircraft will operate to Rijeka and Dubrovnik, while Condor will use A320, A321, and B757 aircraft to Split, just like in the 2021 summer season.
