Serb Leader in Croatia Defends His Actions

ZAGREB, September 24, 2018 - In response to the question of a Croatian Television talk show host why he has not clearly and unequivocally expressed his position on Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić's claim that the present-day Croatia is like Nazi Germany, Croatian Serb leader Milorad Pupovac has countered with the statement that nobody has ever heard him (Pupovac) saying that Croatia is an Ustasha state or likening the modern Croatia to any Nazi or Fascist structure.

ZAGREB, September 20, 2018 - The leader of the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS), MP Milorad Pupovac, responded on Thursday to last week's demand by two war veterans' organisations that the parliament discuss his actions, saying that he was responsible for his own words and actions and not for those of others, "as that is supposed to be so in a law-based country."

After Political Controversy, Traditional Folk Singing Festival Postponed

ZAGREB, August 24, 2018 - The third festival of traditional folk singing known as “ojkanje,” which was to be organised by the Serb cultural society "Prosvjeta" in Petrinja on Saturday, August 25, has been postponed after 12 of 13 participating groups cancelled their attendance due to opposition from some local associations of Homeland War veterans and political parties, Prosvjeta said in a statement, noting that the festival would be organised in early November.

UNESCO Called to Prevent a Ban on Traditional Singing Festival

ZAGREB, August 23, 2018 - The Serb cultural society "Prosvjeta" and the Serb National Council (SNV) said on Wednesday that they had notified UNESCO's World Heritage Committee of attempts to ban a festival of traditional “ojkanje” singing and threats sent to participants in the event promoting that traditional form of folk singing, inscribed on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Vojvodina Authorities Financing Textbooks for Serb Students in Croatia

ZAGREB, August 22, 2018 - The government of the northern Serbian autonomous province of Vojvodina has allocated 14,500 euro for textbooks for first graders enrolling in Serbian-language schools operating in areas where the Joint Council of Municipalities (ZVO) is active in eastern Croatia's Vukovar-Srijem and Osijek-Baranja counties, Radio-Television Vojvodina reported on Wednesday.

Increase in Number of Anti-Serb Incidents in Croatia Recorded

ZAGREB, May 21, 2018 - A total of 393 cases of violence and other forms of incitement to discrimination against Serbs were recorded in Croatia in 2017, compared to 331 such cases reported in 2016, the Serb National Council (SNV) said on Monday.
