Flights to Croatia: Lufthansa Boosts Traffic to Croatia, Smartwings to Split and Dubrovnik

June 3, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates from Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik, and Zadar.

As we announced earlier, Lufthansa will fly from Frankfurt to Dubrovnik and Pula from the end of June. However, Croatian Aviation announced today that the company published a modified flight schedule to destinations in Croatia, according to which Lufthansa normally operates in the summer flight schedule.

In addition to the reintroduction of the Frankfurt-Dubrovnik route, Lufthansa will operate again on the Munich-Dubrovnik route from June 20, once a week, every Saturday. A larger number of weekly flights is expected from the beginning of July when the company could fly on both routes (from Frankfurt and Munich) daily to Dubrovnik.

Lufthansa is returning to Split Airport, connecting this city with Frankfurt and Munich.

From June 20, the line Munich - Split will be introduced, once a week, every Saturday, and from June 27, the line Frankfurt - Split, also once a week, on Saturdays. As is the case with Dubrovnik, a number of weekly flights to Split Airport is expected from July.

On routes to Split and Dubrovnik, Lufthansa will use aircraft from the A320 family (A319, A320, A321) in accordance with the demand and booking on each flight. Smaller aircraft will be used on the route from Frankfurt to Pula.

Likely, the company will not launch other routes to Croatia (Zadar and Rijeka) in June, while the Munich-Zagreb route will most likely be launched by Croatia Airlines, with which Lufthansa has a code-share agreement.

Furthermore, Brussels Airlines previously announced that it would not fly to Zagreb and Zadar this summer season, but has retained the option of launching flights to Dubrovnik and Split.

Croatian Aviation reports that the airline announced a plan to resume regular operations to European destinations from June 15, and from June 27, the destination network will include the Brussels - Dubrovnik line.

The company will operate on the Brussels - Dubrovnik line twice a week, every Tuesday and Sunday, on an A320 aircraft with a capacity of 180 passengers in the fleet of this carrier.

The company plans to introduce regular flights on the Brussels - Split route from July, and at the beginning of next month, the company will increase the number of weekly flights to Dubrovnik (probably to four weeks). The flight schedule of this company for July has not been finalized yet, and when it is confirmed, we will publish the details.

Croatian Aviation also reports that Spanish airline Iberia has announced the resumption of its flights to destinations in Europe as well as those in the US. Among others, the company has included the Madrid-Dubrovnik route in its schedule.

The company normally operates to Zagreb, Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik from Madrid in the summer flight schedule, but in July, according to current announcements, it will only launch a line to Dubrovnik.

From mid-July, Iberia will operate on the Madrid-Dubrovnik - Madrid route 3 times a week, and announces daily flights from the beginning of August. The company has previously announced larger aircraft, the wide-body A332, but, likely, this type of aircraft will not be used on the route to Dubrovnik Airport this summer season, given that demand will be lower than planned before the pandemic.

The route will be operated by A321 aircraft, which has a capacity of 200 passengers in the Iberian fleet.

The company confirmed to us that the flight schedule for July has not yet been finalized, so the possibility of introducing lines from Madrid to Zagreb and Split is left, while the line Madrid - Zadar is expected from August.

Finally, Avio Radar reports that Czech airline Smartwings announced the resumption of flights on June 10. The first flight announced that day is from Prague to Split. The flight to Split will be followed by the launch of other routes, mainly to Greece and Bulgaria.

The Prague-Split route will run twice a week in the first week, on Wednesday and Saturday. The second week of traffic will see an additional flight introduced on Monday, and from June 24, the line will operate daily. The Prague-Dubrovnik line has been announced from July 1, every day. From Poland, lines from Katowice and Warsaw to Split are on offer once a week, on Thursdays, from June 18.

Charter lines are also planned, namely Ostrava-Split, on Saturdays from June 13 and Polish destinations Gdansk, Katowice, Poznan, and Warsaw to Dubrovnik from June 25 once a week, on Thursdays.

Boeing 737-800 aircraft will fly on the routes, and smaller Boeing 737-700 aircraft or larger Boeing 737-900s can also fly.

Flights to Croatia: Korean Air Reduces Winter Capacity, Smartwings Boosts Split Service

September 16, 2019 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for new flights to Croatia with updates from Zagreb and Split.

Avio Radar reports that Korean national carrier Korean Air, a member of the SkyTeam Airline Alliance, will reduce aircraft capacity slightly on its route between Seoul (Incheon Airport) and Zagreb in the coming winter flight schedule.

Thus, instead of the new and larger Boeing 787-7 Dreamliner aircraft, which flew last winter and this summer, the upcoming winter season will feature the Airbus A330-200, which has the capacity for 218 passengers. The winter schedule will run from November 2019 to March 2020.

Additionally, Korean Air will continue to operate on the Seoul-Zagreb-Zurich-Seoul route this winter.

Moving from the capital to the coast, Avio Radar also reports that Czech carrier Smartwings will increase operations on their service between Poland and Split for the 2020 summer season. Namely, the airline will run three flights per week on both lines - Warsaw (Frederic Chopin Airport) and Split-Katowice.

In addition to this year’s one flight per week, which took off on Thursdays, two flights have been added per week on both routes - on Mondays and Saturdays. These new lines will begin working on May 25, 2020. The end of traffic on these routes is still unknown, though tickets are currently on sale until September 7, 2020. Smartwings will operate both routes using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Recall, TCN recently reported that national carrier Croatia Airlines would add a one flight per week between Brussels and Zagreb this winter, totaling to 12 per week. Furthermore, the seasonal service between Zagreb and Dublin will work until January 26, 2020, while its operations between Zagreb and Lisbon will end at the end of October.

Croatia Airlines will maintain the same winter operations for other Croatian cities this year, which include flights from Split to Frankfurt, Munich and Rome, Dubrovnik to Frankfurt, and Rijeka to Munich. Croatia Airlines has also announced no changes to its winter operations between Croatian locations.

Flights to Croatia: Wizz Air Removes Seasonal Osijek-Basel Line, Smartwings to Rijeka

March 24, 2019 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for new flights to Croatia with updates from Osijek, Rijeka, Pula, Dubrovnik, and Split.

AvioRadar reports that Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air has withdrawn all tickets from Osijek to Basel this summer. Namely, the last flight on the summer schedule is planned for June 14, 2019. The route will be traded twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, with additional flights scheduled on Wednesday, April 24 and May 1 this year. We should expect Wizz Air’s return on this line this winter, though flights from Osijek in October are not yet in the airline's offer.

Wizz Air will operate this route using the Airbus A320.

AvioRadar also reports that last year’s charter line from Sweden to Rijeka on the Slovenian airline Adria Airways was taken over by Czech airline Smartwings. Thus, Smartwings will increase the capacity on this charter line, and instead of using the smaller Airbus A310, they will use the larger, Boeing 737-800 between Sweden and Rijeka.

Swedish tourist agency Travea organizes these charter flights. They are scheduled once a week, on Tuesdays in early May and after the summer season in September and October. On the charter line between Gothenburg and Rijeka, there will be four rotations in the pre and postseason. Charter lines from Karlstad, Kristianstad, and Stockholm-Arlanda will fly one group of tourists in the pre and postseason, while the Norrkoping-Rijeka route will have just one charter flight in the preseason.

In other news, there will be six new lines from France to Croatia this year, reports HRTurizam

Namely, Volotea airline will open routes from Lyon to Dubrovnik and Split, from Marseille to Rijeka and Bordeaux to Pula. Air France announced a new direct line to Split from Paris, and Easy Jet opened a direct line from Nantes to Dubrovnik.

Director of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce in France, Danijela Mihalić Đurica, emphasized that the arrivals from the French market are continuously increasing, as well as the interest of French tourists for the discovery of lesser-known Croatian regions.

"Arrivals and overnight stays from the French market have been steadily increasing in recent years, and the French are increasingly coming to regions where there have not been many guests so far, such as Kvarner, Zagreb, Istria or Slavonia. All this is the result of expanding the production of existing tour operators, but also opening Croatia as a completely new destination for some of the new French travel organizers. According to the information we receive from regular meetings with tour operators, the forecasts for the 2019 season are good and good sales trends should continue in this year,” Mihalić Đurica pointed out.
