June 15th marks a couple of things in Croatia: school is out for the summer, the country observes the Feast of Corpus Christi, and the summer tourist season officially begins. And with the tourist season come problems with parking in Split. And for a carefree and affordable vacation in Split there is Split City Parking.

Thrillist, a leading men’s digital lifestyle brand in the US that covers food, drink, travel and entertainment, has named Split as one of the cheapest and most beautiful beach cities to live in around the world.

Around 15 cubic meters of concrete will arrive at Bačvice beach, but there is no reason to panic. 

Most people are probably attracted to the Dalmatian Coast because of the beaches. The idea of island hopping is something out of a 1990’s Jennifer Lopez music video and everyone wants to feel that precious paradise once in their lives. Sure you can go to Hvar and Brac for day trips to swim, but Split is actually in a perfectly unique situation: we are a city, and we have access to a lot of beaches. It would be a shame not to frequent the beaches we have in our city, and you’d be surprised at all the ways you can enjoy a pristine beach day in a few minutes outside of the center. Here are the top beaches in Split. 

First off we have Kašjuni. North of the center of Split and at the foot of Marjan hill past the Mestrovic gallery, Kašjuni is where to go for a calmer beach day. Kašjuni is narrow and rocky and is bordered by a pine forest. It also has a long breakwater to protect you from the wind. This low-key city getaway has toilets, showers and cafe bars, and is also reachable by bus line 12.

Considering nearly every beach in Dalmatia is pebbled, Split has one beach about a 10 minute walk outside of the center that is actually sandy! Of course Bačvice gets written up quite a bit for its shallow water which makes the perfect surface for a match of Picigin, but considering its close proximity to a large city, Bačvice boasts some very clean water. Bačvice is great for children as there is a large water sports complex with everything from an inflatable bounce house to jet skiing. For adults or the party crowd, Bačvice is swarmed with cafe bars and some of the most popular nightclubs in Split. During the summer, Tropic Bar and Club Bačvice open their doors around midnight and go into the wee hours of the morning. There are also plenty of fast food stands open very late - bingo!

About a 10 minute walk from Bačvice going south you’ll come to Trstenik bay and beach, Far less crowded than its sister beach Žnjan next door, Trstenik is a pebbled beach on a small cove, not far from the marina. There are quite a few good restaurants nearby, and COX Bar opened its doors last summer to a very happy crowd. Music will be soaring through the sky, beach chairs are available to customers of COX, and the swimming is ever so pleasant.

For something a little more upscale, about a 10 minute walk south from COX Bar on Trstenik is the Radisson Blu Beach Club. With a resort style feel and full service beach bar, your luxuriously lazy beach day will be fulfilled. The beach club has lounge chairs and cabanas to rent, but they tend to fill up quickly so get there early! You can also jump into the Adriatic sea right from the hotel’s private beach area.

Having just named a few of the best beaches in Split, we’d like to think that the beaches Split has to offer are diversified, and there really is something for everyone. Pro-tip: get some water shoes or jelly’s for the pebbles!

Some nice recognition for Split's most popular beach, as Bacvice is named in Croatia's top ten beaches by travel guide site Rough Guides. Here's what they had to say:

BAČVICE, SPLIT

For many of its inhabitants Split is not so much a city as a religion, centred around a collection of semi-mystic locations. Among the holiest of holies is undoubtedly Bačvice beach, a shallow bay of sand and shingle that has played an important role in the early childhood and teenage years of virtually anyone who has ever called the city home. Immensely popular as a family beach, it’s also a buzzing social hub, with a café-packed pleasure pavilion rising immediately to the east. Bačvice is also famous for being the spiritual home of picigin, a uniquely Dalmatian sport that involves a lot of acrobatic leaping around as players try to prevent a small ball from hitting the water.
