June 29, 2022 - While the City of Split and the seaside towns remain the main attractions in the summer, some major events are about to take place a bit further away from the sea. A look at Split-Dalmatia County summer events to look forward to this year...

It's not too late to make some changes to your Split travel itinerary, even if we're now welcoming the high season, and therefore the high temperatures as well. At the time this article was written, weather reports indicate that the temperature is 36 degrees in Split. It 'sdifficult for us to come up with a better plan that doesn't include being near or even in the sea. Even if someone went out of their way to convince you how much there is to see or do beyond the sea in Split-Dalmatia county, your answer would surely be, ''not in these temperatures!"

What if that someone was me? What if I made an effort to convince you? What if I told you that there are three unmissable Split-Dalmatia County summer events beyond the mountains of Mosor and Kozjak worth seeing? Trust me, there are. Not only will you have a great time, you'll also be able to discover destinations that you might not have thought of before, and get closer to the culture and heritage of other places across Split-Dalmatia County.

5th Thrill Blues Festival (July 1-3, 2022)

Trilj is a municipality and town located 40 km northeast of the centre of Split, and the drive there via the D1 and E65 highways takes between 35 and 40 minutes. Trilj is a very popular destination for those who love adventure sports and outdoor activities, due to its proximity to the Dinaric Alps and the Cetina River. But in addition, Trilj boasts a great history that goes all the way back to Mesolithic times.

This Friday, Trilj will hold its 5th edition of the Thrill Blues Festival (get the pun?). The Thrill Blues Festival is part of the ''Summer in Trilj'' programme, which seeks to bring visitors closer to Trilj's tourist offer. From the 1st of July, Trilj will become the capital of blues music and will have not only an elite lineup on its stage but also a great gastronomic offer. If you're in Split and looking for a different experience, then this is for you.

46th Imotska Sila (July 3 - August 17, 2022)

Imotski may already be familiar destination to many. It's located on the other side of the Biokovo mountain range, 85 kilometres southeast of the center of Split, a journey that takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes by car if you go via the E65 highway. While Imotski is widely known for its medieval castle, as well as the popular Blue Lake and Red Lake, Imotski is also a place in Croatia that has been inhabited since Neolithic times, and thus has a lot of history. One of the longest-running cultural events in the region will be held in this town, Imotska Sila, which will celebrate its 46th edition from July 3 to August 17. Get ready to enjoy an event with a rich programme lasting more than a month, which will include numerous concerts of different genres, magic shows, poetry recitals, film screenings, and much more.

307th Sinjska Alka (August 7, 2022)

Perhaps one of the most important and anticipated Split-Dalmatia County summer events, the Sinjska Alka event is an equestrian competition and is classed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Sinjska Alka event takes place in the historic town of Sinj, 34 kilometres northeast of the centre of Split, and you have to take the D1 motorway and embark on a journey that takes 35 minutes by car to get there. 

The Sinjska Alka event commemorates the Croatian-Venetian victory on August 14, 1715, in which a Christian population of no more than 700 managed to resist 60,000 marauding Ottomans. In addition to this military prowess, the inhabitants also celebrate the Lady of Sinj, who is believed to have interceded for them. In addition to the famous equestrian competition, in which the participants ride horses and try to aim their spears at a hanging metal ring (the alka), the people of Sinj also celebrate the procession of the Lady of Sinj on those days. Sinj definitely becomes the focus of attention throughout the country, and it is absolutely worth it if you get away from the sea for a few days to enjoy a great cultural experience.

June 19, 2021 - Organized by the Trilj Tourist Board and the City of Trilj, the "4th Thrill Blues Festival" will be held on July 2 and 3 in the Trilj City Park.

With its program, the festival complements the Trilj summer event and enriches the cultural and tourist offer of Trilj and the entire Split-Dalmatia County. In the heart of the season, on July 2, 2021, Trilj becomes the capital of blues music. The "Thrill Blues Festival" starts on that day, and the biggest names in the international blues scene arrive in the Cetina region. In addition to enjoying good music, all guests who arrive in this city on the Cetina will have something to see.

On the first day, Friday, July 2, blues fans will be able to visit the workshop "Blues at School", an educational blues class in which children and those interested will be given a lecture on the beginnings and development of blues, chocolate bar presentation in the afternoon and evening "Welcome jam" in the City Park Trilj is planned for hours.

On Saturday, July 3, in Trilj City Park, the main program will be held starting at 6 pm.

The entire event will be held in compliance with the epidemiological measures, and all information and notifications related to the protocol of registration of participants can be found on the official website of the Tourist Board of Trilj www.visittrilj.com

May 3, 2021 - An ancient iron mine in Dugopolje has been discovered near the settlement of Kotlenice! 

At the foot of the Mali Mosor hill near the settlement of Kotlenice (Dugopolje municipality), there is an underground mine in which iron was mined during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was likely mined for the needs of the Roman legion in Trilj's Tirulija, reports Dalmacija Danas.

However, as the Romans forcibly occupied these areas, it is assumed that they took it from the Illyrians.

The history of this mine is increased by three entrances and dozens of trenches. The lowest point of the mine is about 35 meters below ground level and branches almost a kilometer in all its directions.

"We urge you not to enter the mine without equipment or expert guidance due to the danger of getting lost or injured by the collapse of fragile material," says the author of the video "Ancient mine - secrets of the underground labyrinth in Kotelnice," Jurica Galić Juka.

At the end of this instructive and interesting video, speleologists gave a great example of how to protect the heritage of their homeland. Namely, the truck tire thrown into the mine was taken to the surface and then deposited in a container.

August 20, 2020 - A few years ago, a Roman road was opened in the area of Samoleč, near Trilj. On that 500-meter-long road section, the remains of cobblestones are still visible in some places, as evidence of the intensive roadway that connected Salona with inland Dalmatia in ancient times.

This road heading was of great importance because it connected the Roman colonies and military camps with Pons Tiluri on the Cetina river.

Although a month and a half were spent picking up garbage and clearing bush before opening, this cultural asset soon became a new destination for an illegal landfill.

When opening the Roman road, the leader of the archeological project of the Roman road communication of Central Dalmatia, Lino Ursić, stressed the importance of developing archeological tourism as a subtype of cultural tourism.

„When we first saw the road, we were overjoyed because it is well preserved, we can see the paved road, curbs, walls, the remains of the track. It is a truly valuable archeological find. Trilj will have to become a destination of archeological-historical tourism because in that area we have a roman road, a Roman military camp, two medieval fortifications, and a quality museum that presents all this", Ursić stated.

It seems that this idea has fallen into oblivion, given that a good part of the site today is covered with old furniture, plastic waste, and glass.

In addition to being aesthetically unpleasing and certainly unattractive to visitors, it is dangerous for cattle coming here to graze and for children who could be injured.

Municipal services have been contacted regarding this problem, but guess what, nowhere to answer!

An interesting tourist product, a historical story of Roman history and roads, which would connect Split and Salona via Klis and Trilj, ended up in – garbage.

"Although museums have been forced to close their doors for visitors in order to preserve public health, we also strive to develop museum activity in these difficult circumstances. To the best of our ability, the museum community utilizes smart technologies and modern technological solutions; virtual walks and exhibitions, mobile apps, social networks, podcasts, and various other channels to successfully communicate with your audience. Many cultural events have been delayed and canceled, but some of them go on in a slightly modified form.

One such event is the International Museum Day, which is celebrated on May 18. A common theme of International Museum Day 2020 is "Museums for Diversity and Inclusiveness", which emphasizes the active role of museums in establishing a dialogue between different cultures, promoting social sensibility and building a tolerant and inclusive society.

Since we highly value the individuality, needs, and desires of each of our existing and future visitors, and view diversity as an inexhaustible source of knowledge, creative ideas and experiences, we invite you to create the contents of the upcoming International Museum Day, to be more involved in creating a joint “collage of diversity” that we will present in virtual form on International Museum Day on May 18.

March 3, 2020 - Four Croatian wineries were among the 163 from 15 countries at this year's Vancouver International Wine Festival. Among them was Krolo Winery, the only representative from Split-Dalmatia County.

VanWineFest was held for the 42nd time and is considered the best international wine festival in North America.

“We traveled to Canada this year, inspired by the great experience from last year's fair. It is one of the oldest food and wine fairs in the world, which makes it the right place to promote Croatian winemakers as well as our Dalmatian hinterland. The theme of this year's fair was rosé, so our brand was Šjora. Using Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Crvena kastelanski, three extremely powerful red varieties, we were able to produce one of the most impressive rosé wines on the Croatian market, whose quality has now been recognized by world experts,” said Drazan Krolo.

Krolo’s vineyards are located in Strmendolec, in the Trilj region, a specific area for viticulture. Because the continental climate is blended with the Mediterranean, Krolo wines have one special spark that deserves many international accolades and awards. It is of particular curiosity that, a few years ago, they won a bronze medal for one of the biggest blind trials in the middle of Bordeaux for the Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, a product that has been admired by the French for decades.

“The reactions of visitors from all over the world were excellent. We need to stand by the biggest ones to confirm our value and I can proudly say that we, together with other colleagues from Croatia, excellently presented our winemaking capabilities. Americans have been passionate about Zinfandel for many years, and our great advantage is the quality of the product we have and the fact that Croatia, or my Kastela, is where this variety comes from. And besides praise, we continue to ship our bottles to the Canadian market,” Drazan Krolo added, noting that after filling the capacity of 40,000 bottles, they do not plan on expanding because he wants to remain committed to every grape and every bottle.

In addition to Krolo Winery, this year's Croatian representatives in Canada included Korta Katarina from Peljesac and Istrian wineries Franc Arman and Coronica.

The Vancouver International Wine Festival was held from February 22 to March 1, and 57 different events were held as part of the fair - dinners, tastings, workshops, lectures and seminars. Numerous guests had the opportunity to enjoy the "Tastes of Croatia" dinner, where Croatian wines were served with delicious snacks.

February 29, 2020 - A meeting was held in Sinj for the informal clusters association of the tourist boards of Inland Dalmatia.

Ferata.hr reports that the meeting was attended by State Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Tonci Glavina, Mayor of Sinj Kristina Križanac, Mayor of Vrlika Jure Plazonic, Mayor of Dugopolje Perica Bosancic, Mayor of Klis Jakov Vetma, and directors of tourist boards of Vrlika, Trilj, Sinj and Dugopolje - Dijana Maras, Andriana Ivkovic, Monika Vrgoc, and Tomislav Balić.

The meeting discussed the model of merging the tourist boards of Inland Dalmatia into a single cluster, due to pulling funds from the Ministry of Tourism intended for underdeveloped tourist areas, as well as from funds intended for associated tourist boards through quality joint projects.

 The tourist boards of Inland Dalmatia have so far participated in a series of joint projects and would continue to do so in the official form with the new legislation. This is one of the first meetings on the informal association of Inland Dalmatia tourist boards.

December 18, 2019 - The Trilj Tourist Board invites everyone to the 7th Christmas Fair, which will be held on December 21, 2019, beginning at 3:00 pm at the suspension bridge.

A variety of Christmas decorations and handicrafts, as well as honey and honey products, will surely give you the best Christmas gift ideas for your loved ones. Furthermore, you’ll support the work and efforts of all exhibitors!

For all visitors, and in the good spirit of Christmas, the Trilj Tourist Board has prepared sweet delicacies of the region to be enjoyed with a hot glass of mulled wine.

A special part of this event will be the charity sale of greetings cards made during workshops organized by the Tilurium Art Association Trilj.

After the fair, the Tourist Board also invites all interested to join them in lighting the fourth Advent candle and enjoy an evening program with Klapa "Sinj", Dream Team "Babe" from Ljubuški, the group "Vertigo" and Branko Medak.

November 26, 2019 - Advent in Trilj begins this Saturday, November 26, 2019!

If you're in Inland Dalmatia this winter, Trilj is one town you won't want to miss.

The Advent program begins this Saturday on the Trilj bridge for the official opening ceremony with the 'Trilj' kindergarten students, the young Trilj majorettes, and the Noel group from Djakovo. The first Advent candle will be lit on Saturday.

October the 25th, 2019 - A sustainable way of living and working has always been important to me. I’ve always tried my best to align my work in tourism in a positive way. So it has been my pleasure to work alongside Green World Holidays who share the same belief; that every one of us has a responsibility to look out for our environment and for our fellow neighbours.

With this philosophy in mind, Green World Holidays wanted to develop a direct link between their families visiting Croatia with a local charity in Trilj, Dalmatia. The chosen charity is “UOSIT”, which is a charity for children with special needs.

The charity was founded back in 2006 in the town of Trilj and their goal is to help people with special needs to function in everyday life. This small charity has just over 100 members, mostly which are children born with special needs. This amazing local charity also offers an important place of support for parents of the children to share their experiences.

To give our guests a deeper sense of Croatian culture and a way to raise donations for the ''UOSIT'' children, we created a weekly charity quiz that ran throughout July and August. At the end of the season, the directors of Green World Holidays match whatever has been given by their guests.

It was a great success and something we will continue to do each season. What makes us especially happy is the fact that everyone participated in this, both parents, teenagers and kids and they learned more about Croatia and were able to help a really worthwhile cause.

It’s important to remind ourselves that travel is much more than visiting an area. We should feel the local culture, meet new people and help others along the way. Our history, our geography, our sport, our people, our Croatian trivia is something to be very proud of – so why not create your own ''quiz'’ and raise money for a local charity.

After this year and the good will generated, I'm looking forward to next year and making more people happy. A smile is a ''thank you'' that we all need.
