Split Tourist Board Looks to San Sebastian Model for 365 Tourism

October 24, 2019 - The Split Tourist Board is looking at the model of San Sebastian, Spain, to develop 365 tourism in the city.

Organized by the Split Tourist Board, Dalmatinski Portal reports that representatives of private renters, hoteliers, travel agencies, camps and museums visited tourism representatives in the city of San Sebastian, Spain, where they exchanged their experiences of managing a tourist destination that successfully realized year-round tourism.

The Donostia - San Sebastian Tourism Organization prepared a series of presentations for the Split representatives for them to get acquainted with the products of the city and the wider region. This especially focused on congress tourism they are successfully developing, as well as ways to attract guests all year long. By the size and population, this Spanish city is most similar to Split, with its strategic commitment to year-round tourism based on the offer of culture and gastronomy, and according to Trip Advisor, next to Bilbao, San Sebastian was selected as the best European destination.

Among the various topics in destination management, the development of musical events was particularly discussed. In addition to investing in destination development, San Sebastian has an average hotel occupancy of 300 days a year. Thus, as part of this visit, Split's tourism representatives had the opportunity to hear and see their experiences in managing the destination that led to such business results.

San Sebastian cooperates with the Tourism and Hospitality School in educational and tourism experiences, which presented an opportunity to exchange knowledge and skills, especially in light of the fact that in the first nine months of this year, the number of overnights by Spanish guests in Split increased by 20 percent compared to last year.

Recall, Alijana Vukšić, director of the Split Tourist Board, revealed that 837,125 guests visited Split in the first nine months of 2019, with almost 2.5 million tourist overnights achieved. Thus, 67,000 more guests chose Split for their holiday than last year.

American tourists make up the biggest market for Split, followed by the United Kingdom. The U.S. and U.K. tourists are followed by the French, Germans, Australians, Spanish, and Italians.

Split Tourist Board Announces Busiest Nine Months Ever - and Guests Still Arriving

October 10, 2019 - Split has recorded the best nine months in tourist traffic ever. A look at the successful year so far thanks to the Split Tourist Board.

Slobodna Dalmacija writes that Alijana Vukšić, director of the Split Tourist Board, revealed that 837,125 guests visited Split during that period, with almost 2.5 million tourist overnights achieved.

Namely, with this result, Split surpassed last year's best tourist year by as much as 8 percent in the number of visits, while the number of overnight stays is up 9 percent from last year.

According to the Split Tourist Board,  in the first nine months of this year, 67,000 more guests chose Split for their holiday than last year. Such a successful result could not be achieved without the contribution of an excellent September, in which 120,584 guests visited the Dalmatian capital and recorded 337,868 overnight stays. Thus, September saw a 4 percent increase in the number of guests and 5 percent more overnight stays.

“The tourist traffic in Split in the first nine months of this year differs from everyone else in Croatia in that Split is the only city where Americans take first place throughout the year in terms of the number of visits,” said the proud Split Tourist Board director.

In September alone, almost 18,000 Americans visited Split, while this year in total, Split hosted just under 100,000 tourists from the United States, who believe Split is a requirement on their Croatian holiday.

“These are the consumers who, according to the latest research, spend about 160 euros a day traveling here, staying in more expensive accommodation, and staying longer in Split than elsewhere.

It is well known that Americans spend only one night on their travels in Europe, while in Split so far, they have spent 2.4 nights on average,” Vukšić points out.

Guests from the United Kingdom stay in Split for more than three days and are the second biggest market for Split. So far, there have been about 90,000 tourists from the U.K. in Split, who managed about 300,000 overnights. The U.S. and U.K. tourists are followed by the French, Germans, and Australians, as well as the Spaniards and Italians

“At the beginning of October, arrivals and still full flights to the Split Airport from more than 100 European destinations confirm that Split is equally interesting in all seasons, and guests arriving in the coming days will be able to enjoy several entertainment, cultural and sporting events,” adds Vukšić.

Vukšić notes that tourists are especially interested in the Split Gourmet Expo - a gastronomic exhibition of Split restaurants, taverns, and hotels on the Riva, though some other manifestations are being prepared.

Split Tourist Board Plans for Ice Skating Rink at Dardin this Winter

October 7, 2019 - The Split Tourist Board is moving quickly to plan this year's Advent festivities, and has revealed some exciting new attractions this year.

With the summer over, we must move our focus onto the next eventful season and look forward to what’s in store this Christmas and New Year’s holiday. Fortunately, for the citizens of Split, all winter events could already be known by the end of this month.

Namely, Splitski Dnevnik writes that the Split Tourist Board has already announced two important competitions - one, for the organizer of the New Year's Eve party, and another for an ice skating rink at Dardin park.

Thus, after last year's Advent events, there will likely be an ice skating rink at Dardin, similar to the one in Zagreb. The competition for all interested parties is open for another ten days, and 400,000 kuna will be provided.

Those wishing to compete must submit a detailed program description and financial offer, and must have at least three years' experience organizing the same or similar events. Also, applicants must not owe the City of Split.

The Advent cottages we enjoyed at Dardin last year will remain, and the ice skating rink will only serve to enhance the atmosphere.

“The rink will be a part of the Advent events, like in Zrinjevac, and it will be one of the novelties during the Advent celebration. The rink will act as paths between the cottages and an additional offer to the citizens of Split and tourists during the Christmas holidays,” says Split Tourist Board director Alijana Vukšić.

The ice skating rink must have a total capacity for 200 skaters, free skating for Split's kindergarten and elementary school children should be organized in the morning from 10 am to 1 pm every day except weekends and holidays, and there must be an exciting opening and closing program.

The organizer must also set up four catering cottages, one for merchants, and one for storing equipment and selling tickets. Opening hours will be from 10 am to 9 pm.

Recall, Split first had an ice skating rink at Prokurative nine years ago.

Furthermore, call for proposals to select the organizer of the “New Year's Eve 2020” concert has also been launched.

The organizer must ensure the following:

A.) design the program to follow new trends in local and foreign music, with performances by pop stars and renowned musicians, B.) stage, lighting and sound must be part of the offer and designed in a sophisticated manner, C.) room for VIP guests, D.) 5 minutes of fireworks, E.) perform all other necessary activities to hold a safe and legal event, F.) the duration of the program is from 31 December 2019 at 9 pm to 1 January 2020 at 2 am.

The Split Tourist Board, in cooperation with the City of Split, will provide financial support of 500,000.00 kuna gross to co-finance the event. The Split Tourist Board and the City will also provide and allow the organizer to use the public area where the reception is held for free.

The deadline to submit offers ended on September 19, 2019.

Although the competition ended, the bidder has not yet been selected because the decision of the Tourist Board is pending. Thus, who will organize the New Year's Eve party on the Riva will be known after the competition for the ice skating rink at Dardin has been completed.

Split Records Best August Ever, Arrivals and Overnights Up 5%

September 6,  2019 - Split was still a hit in August, but what will September bring?

Slobodna Dalmacija reports that the city of Split recorded the best tourism numbers in August in independent Croatia, when it was visited by 193,305 guests (10,000 more than last year) who achieved 659,000 overnights (37,000 more than 2018), which is a 5% increase in the number of arrivals and overnight stays, the Split Tourist Board revealed on Thursday.

These numbers have pushed Split to one of the top tourist destinations in the country according to the growth of tourist traffic in the busiest month of the peak season. It is also interesting to note that most of the guests visiting Split in August were from Great Britain (21,000), while the number of French tourists came in second (20,600). Italian tourists followed with 14,965 arrivals, then Germans, guests from the USA, Spain, and Australia.

Such a structure of foreign tourist traffic points to the fact that Split is recognized in all parts of the world as a city that provides culture, entertainment, holidays and events for all tastes and generations of its visitors.

Tourists stayed in Split for an average of 3.5 days this August, and according to all data, accommodation capacities were well filled at the highest prices of the yearly-level, so the financial results of the tourism sector will be better than last year. According to the available announcements, tourist traffic in Split this September should be equally successful, thanks to numerous events that will welcome guests.

The highest increase in arrivals in August was recorded by the Irish, who made up 3,300 arrivals or 61 percent more than last year, and guests from the Republic of Korea who achieved 3,700 arrivals, which is an increase of 39 percent compared to last year.

When analyzing Split tourist traffic data from January to the end of August, Split recorded extraordinary results with 714,265 guest arrivals and 2,151,724 million overnight stays. Thus, in the past eight months, Split has recorded an 8 percent increase in arrivals or 60,000 more visitors than it did last year. They posted 200,000 more overnight stays than last year, which is an increase of 9 percent in overnight stays.

In the previous eight months this year, most tourists in Split are American (75,000), followed by Britons (72,000), the French (50,000), and Germans (42,000), while guests from Australia are in fifth place.

In all these markets, Split has achieved double-digit growth in arrivals, which guarantees a long tourist season, since these are also guests who travel year-round.

2nd Edition of xSTaticJAM Bringing 50 Local and International Graffiti Artists to Split

August 28, 2019 - The 2nd edition of xSTaticJAM, the international graffiti gathering and street art festival in Split, begins on Wednesday, August 28.

The content-rich program this year gathers 50 local and international graffiti artists in Split who will enrich the city’s public spaces in five urban locations with their artwork. In addition to the graffiti program, this year's xSTaticJAM will also give citizens and visitors the chance to participate in an all-day street art event on Saturday, August 31st, offering a range of free content at the Youth Center and the surrounding area, reports Dalmacija Danas.

The artists will use their expertise to create artwork on Pujanke Street, Supavla Street, the sidewalk in Kman and the walls at the entrance to the Marjan Tunnel. The artists will paint until Friday when Split’s citizens will be able to see the final result and revitalized city walls, which will become a unique street showroom and an example of how to aesthetically enrich urban spaces.

The grand finale of this year's xSTaticJAM will follow this Saturday, August 31st, at the Youth Center and on the plateau in front of the Center, where a full-day program dedicated to street art culture will be held. On this occasion, citizens will have the opportunity to try their hands at graffiti, take photos and talk to graffiti artists, but also to leave their messages on the billboards as part of "Take It Off!" by which the City wishes to promote freedom of expression without affecting public spaces.

Split’s youth and anyone up for an adventure can join the skate school and ride BMX bikes, while visitors will also be able to learn the basics of screen printing, film projections and video projections, check out a photo exhibition by graphic designer and documentary filmmaker Marko Dajak, and explore the Open art corner, all accompanied by music from the DJ duo Los Santos and an interesting food offer.

From 9 pm, the music part of the evening will be followed by live concerts, with Gršo, Žuvi, and Krešo Bengalka performing. The after-party then moves to Kocka with Banana Zvuk and a gastro corner. All content is open and free to all interested citizens.

1,000 Participants, 5 Days: 15th European Veteran Rugby Festival in Split

Slobodna Dalmacija reports on June 11, 2019, that the 15th European Veteran Rugby Festival begins in Split this Thursday, June 13 and ends on Monday, June 17. Just less than 1000 participants will spend five days in Split and Dalmatia under the slogan "fun, friendship, brotherhood and family!"

The established Split Rugby Club ‘Nada’, with its many outstanding sports traditions, celebrates two important anniversaries in 2019 - 60 years since the club was founded and 45 years of the ‘Ragbi '59’ Veterans' Club. Thus, their colleagues from 17 European countries and teams from Argentina and New Zealand will help them mark these significant anniversaries.

The Split rugby players, along with the support of the City of Split, the Croatian Rugby Federation,  the Split Association of Sport, TZ Split and TZ Split-Dalmatia County, will ensure all of their guests feel comfortable and that their stay in Split will be one for the memory books, once again promoting Split and Dalmatia as a significant sports and tourist destination with an exceptionally vibrant cultural and historical heritage and a renowned and respected gastronomic offer

For these reasons, the event is conceived in the form of a festival where, alongside the sport, guests have the opportunity to get acquainted with the customs and traditions of the host. The sports part of the event will be held throughout the day on Friday, June 14 and Sunday, June 16 at the Nada Rugby Club and the HNK Hajduk Split auxiliary fields.

The festivals were usually held every two years until 2012, and from 2013, they’ve been held every year. The European Golden Oldies Rugby Festival (EGOR) is intended for veteran rugby players over 35 years of age. At the Split festival, as well as all the previous editions, there will be a significant number of players over the age of 70.

The festival's spirit is best shown by the fact that there are no medals awarded by placement and team results, but the awards are shared by teams that best reflect the spirit of veteran rugby, the oldest players, the toughest teams and players, the most beautiful moves and actions (teams and individuals) and the best fair-play.

The event aims to promote the sport as one for all ages and educates about the different countries, nations, cultures, customs, and traditions of host cities. The tradition of the Golden Oldies festival dates back to 1979 when the world's first festival was held in Auckland. The first European festival was held in Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands in 1992. To date, there have been a total of 14.

The reputation of the Split rugby in the European Rugby Union is best explained by the fact that Nada and the City of Split are the only that has had the opportunity to organize this event twice in the 37 years of the EGOR Festival. Recall, Split held their first EGOR Festival in 2002.

Days of Diocletian Begin in Split (VIDEO)

Days of Diocletian officially opened in Split on May 17, 2019, and will last until September 27, 2019.

The Days of Diocletian pilot project, which proved successful last year, will continue this year through the end of September, reports Splitski Dnevnik on May 17, 2019.

This year's event started precisely at noon with a festive children’s program at Peristyle. Recall, the goal of the event is to revitalize history and enrich the antique content throughout the summer.

"Under the leadership of HNK Split, Emperor Diocletian will come to Perityle, where the ‘Changing of the Guard’ ceremony will be held, and as part of the program, we can expect the address of Emperor Diocletian, the Roman legion and numerous other surprises,” announced the Split Tourist Board

"As part of this event, we will see the traditional 'Changing of the Guard’, a project under the leadership of HNK, as well as Roman Legions at the live museum. We are taking the good experiences from last year and are using them for the events throughout the summer,” added the director of the Split Tourist Board.

Head of the Roman Guard, Ivan Vatavuk, added that the 'Changing of the Guard' ceremony is expected every Friday at noon, and young actors of the Split Theater will play in the roles of Diocletian and Prisca. Vatavuk continued by saying that the Roman legion has walked through Peristyle for the last 14 years, but while they wore plastic armor in the beginning, they now carry 10-17 kilograms of heavy weight to give the tourists a real look into the past.

“This year, through the entire tourist season, we intend to introduce tourists to the Praetorians and the Legion, and with the help of scenery from HNK, we tried to isolate the 21st century from the Peristyle completely. We have created a total of four projects this year, and the first of them is the greeting and speech of Emperor Diocletian, to be held every Friday in Peristyle, with the formation of the legion and the gladiator fight. Another program called “Dare to Know" will be conducted by two actors Ivan Baranović and Marjan Nejašmić Banić, who will walk around the city and begin an interactive and educational relationship with tourists. The goal is to see how much tourists know about Split. We'll call tourists in the alleyways, let them know about the history of the city. Everything will be recorded and used as promotional material for the Tourist Board,” Vatavuk said.

The third project is the Roman march, which was also launched as a pilot project last year, during which Diocletian walks Split by night.

"Then you see the Emperor stop in a crowd of 20 people drinking a glass of wine, and everyone stops, and then they want photos and it’s an interactive experience."

The last project is a memorial to the Imperial Split, which will allow tourists to take photos with the Emperor, Empress, and the entire guard on Fridays and post the images on social networks with the hashtags #visitsplit, #croatiafulloflife, to further promote the city.

Diocletian's legacy will also be displayed through the living museum project at the Cornaro rampart where every first Friday of the month, visitors can see the Roman legion formation, gladiator fights, and be able to shoot bows and arrows and try on the legionary equipment, said Lovre Ćakić, secretary of Association of Diocletian's Legion.
