Wizz Air is still negotiating with certain airports in Croatia, so there is a chance that more new routes will be announced in the peak season, although the chances are getting smaller as we approach the summer.

Currently, 1,778 operations have been announced on these lines for this summer, with most, of course, to Split Airport. A320 and A321 aircraft with a capacity of 180 to 230 seats have been announced on all routes.

Thus, 282,150 seats are available to and from Split on Wizz Air, while 89,452 seats are available to and from Dubrovnik Airport.

The Hungarian airline is offering more than 370 thousand seats to and from Croatia in the upcoming summer season, and most of the routes will start operating in the first half of June, or in a little less than a month.

Summer Flight News Continues: More Wizz Air Flights to Split, Transavia Flights to Zadar

March 19, 2021 -  The latest flight news to Croatia, with the announcement of more Wizz Air flights to Split, a new Transavia flight to Zadar, and increased operations between Istanbul and Zagreb in April.

Croatian Aviation reports that Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air introduces the fourth new route to Split in the summer flight schedule in 2021!

Namely, Wizz Air has launched a new service between Split and Krakow from mid-June.

Wizz Air has already announced three new lines to Split for this year, from Oslo, Gdansk, and Wroclaw, so this summer, Split will have as many as 8 Wizz Air lines, of which as many as 5 lines are to destinations in Poland.

The Krakow - Split - Krakow line will be in operation from June 11 to September 10, twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays.

On the 27 announced return flights, Wizz Air will operate A320 aircraft, and in the total offer, almost 10,000 seats between the two mentioned cities in the upcoming summer season!

With four new routes, the Hungarian low-cost airline will offer additional almost 40 thousand seats to and from Split Airport.

But that's not all the new summer flight news.

Ex-Yu Aviation reporters that low-cost carrier Transavia will launch a new seasonal summer line this year, connecting Paris Orly Airport and Zadar Airport!

Namely, this Transavia flight to Zadar will begin on July 3 and operate twice per week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The new seasonal line will end on September 4.

Recall, Transavia already connects Rotterdam and Zadar.

Finally, Croatian Aviation reports that Turkish Airlines will significantly increase the number of operations between Istanbul and Zagreb in early April.

Turkish Airlines has so far operated regularly between Istanbul and Zagreb four times a week, except for Christmas when there were slightly more operations on this route, given the growth in demand during that period.

The summer flight schedule will take effect at the end of March, which is when Turkish Airlines will increase the number of operations at Zagreb Airport.

From Thursday, April 1, to Sunday, April 4, the airline will have four flights to Zagreb, with two daily flights announced for Thursday (April 1).

From Monday, April 5, to Sunday, April 11, as many as 9 flights have been announced, of which two flights a day on Monday, Saturday, and Sunday.

From April 12 to 25, five flights per week have been announced (one more than the rest of the winter flight schedule).

In April, Turkish Airlines will operate a total of 27 return flights on the route between Istanbul and Zagreb, using aircraft types A321, B737-800, and B737-900ER. This well-known airline will offer about 10,000 seats to and from Zagreb in April. An increase in the number of operations is also expected in May.

Flights to Croatia: Wizz Air Adds Another Split Route this Summer

January 26, 2021 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Wizz Air adds another Split route in its summer flight schedule.

Croatian Aviation reports that only five days after it announced a new line from Gdansk to Split, Wizz Air has added another to Dalmatia's busiest airport.

Wizz Air, a Hungarian low-cost airline, launched another new route to Split Airport, specifically in this year's summer flight schedule.

Namely, from June 6, the Oslo - Split - Oslo line will be introduced, which will operate twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, departing in the evening from Split Airport.

Norwegian and SAS also connect Oslo and Split with direct flights in the summer flight schedule.

In its summer flight schedule, Wizz Air will offer over 15,000 available seats between Oslo and Split!

Wizz Air will operate A320 aircraft on the route, which has a capacity of 180 passengers in the fleet of this carrier. The line will work until the end of October (October 28, 2021), and the airline will perform 42 return flights on this route.

Tickets are on sale on the airline's official website from today.

Croatian Aviation reported last week that Gdansk - Split - Gdansk would operate from June 17 to mid-September, twice a week, in the evening on Thursdays and Sundays.

The new route between Gdansk and Split will be operated by A320 aircraft with a capacity of 180 seats in the Wizz Air fleet.

The airline has 26 return flights on sale on this new route, making more than 9,300 seats available between Split and Gdansk.

Split is the only destination of this well-known low-cost airline in the Republic of Croatia, for now. In the summer flight schedule, the airline will operate to Split on six international routes, two of which are new - Gdansk and Oslo.

Flights to Croatia: Wizz Air Will Not Operate to Split Airport this Winter

October 14, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Wizz Air will not operate to Split Airport this winter.

Croatian Aviation reports that this summer, Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air introduced a new route to Croatia from Dortmund to Split, which was originally scheduled to operate in the winter flight schedule this year. However, that will no longer happen.

The Split - Dortmund line started operating on August 1 this year, after Wizz Air opened its new base in this German city. Flights to Split operated three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Wizz Air, however, decided to operate on this route only in the summer flight schedule, which is not strange given the current global pandemic and reduced demand. Split is no exception, and the company will not operate this winter to airports in the region where there are significantly more flights, such as Skopje, Tuzla, Belgrade, and a number of other destinations.

Split Airport is the only destination of this well-known low-cost airline in the Republic of Croatia. Recall, Wizz Air operates on four international routes to Split in the summer; from Warsaw, Katowice, London and Dortmund.

Wizz Air used to operate to Osijek Airport (on the Basel - Osijek route), but this line was canceled even before the outbreak of the global coronavirus pandemic.

The company has not yet announced the summer flight schedule for next year, so it remains to be seen whether Wizz Air will introduce new routes to Croatian destinations in the summer of 2021. This airline, as Croatian Aviation unofficially found out, is interested in introducing routes to Zagreb Airport.

Recall, as we announced on Tuesday, Eurowings will therefore operate in the winter flight schedule to Split and Zagreb from three German airports: Cologne, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart. You can read more about these lines HERE.

Flights to Croatia: Wizz Air Removes Seasonal Osijek-Basel Line, Smartwings to Rijeka

March 24, 2019 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for new flights to Croatia with updates from Osijek, Rijeka, Pula, Dubrovnik, and Split.

AvioRadar reports that Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air has withdrawn all tickets from Osijek to Basel this summer. Namely, the last flight on the summer schedule is planned for June 14, 2019. The route will be traded twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, with additional flights scheduled on Wednesday, April 24 and May 1 this year. We should expect Wizz Air’s return on this line this winter, though flights from Osijek in October are not yet in the airline's offer.

Wizz Air will operate this route using the Airbus A320.

AvioRadar also reports that last year’s charter line from Sweden to Rijeka on the Slovenian airline Adria Airways was taken over by Czech airline Smartwings. Thus, Smartwings will increase the capacity on this charter line, and instead of using the smaller Airbus A310, they will use the larger, Boeing 737-800 between Sweden and Rijeka.

Swedish tourist agency Travea organizes these charter flights. They are scheduled once a week, on Tuesdays in early May and after the summer season in September and October. On the charter line between Gothenburg and Rijeka, there will be four rotations in the pre and postseason. Charter lines from Karlstad, Kristianstad, and Stockholm-Arlanda will fly one group of tourists in the pre and postseason, while the Norrkoping-Rijeka route will have just one charter flight in the preseason.

In other news, there will be six new lines from France to Croatia this year, reports HRTurizam

Namely, Volotea airline will open routes from Lyon to Dubrovnik and Split, from Marseille to Rijeka and Bordeaux to Pula. Air France announced a new direct line to Split from Paris, and Easy Jet opened a direct line from Nantes to Dubrovnik.

Director of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce in France, Danijela Mihalić Đurica, emphasized that the arrivals from the French market are continuously increasing, as well as the interest of French tourists for the discovery of lesser-known Croatian regions.

"Arrivals and overnight stays from the French market have been steadily increasing in recent years, and the French are increasingly coming to regions where there have not been many guests so far, such as Kvarner, Zagreb, Istria or Slavonia. All this is the result of expanding the production of existing tour operators, but also opening Croatia as a completely new destination for some of the new French travel organizers. According to the information we receive from regular meetings with tour operators, the forecasts for the 2019 season are good and good sales trends should continue in this year,” Mihalić Đurica pointed out.

High Costs, Seasonality in Croatia Hinder Wizz Air from Expanding Operations

On December 10, 2018, Ex Yu Aviation spoke with Wizz Air CEO Jozsef Varadi about why the Hungarian low-cost airline has such a limited presence in Croatia.

Citing seasonality and high costs, Varadi said: “Unfortunately, if you look at the Croatian coastline it is a very seasonal business. It is intact for a few months and then sort of dies out for the rest of the year. Zagreb Airport is quite in a similar situation as Belgrade Airport in terms of costs, so I think it is a high-priced airport environment with fluctuating demand. Should the costs come down, I think they would attract us".

Varadi added, however, that overpriced airports are a problem throughout the region.

"For whatever reason, it is still kind of an inherited issue in the region to price airports very high and this is not the recipe for success. The recipe for success is taking down airport costs. As a result, you are attracting a lot more capacity into the airport and that capacity will stimulate the marketplace and you will recoup that investment through volume. I think there is still a lot of legacy thinking with regards to airport management and airport costs. If you look even at some of the privatized airports, not in the former Yugoslavia, but for example in Tirana, it is a privatized airport but we have the same issue in Tirana. To some extent, Skopje is a privatized airport and the development of Skopje is not aided because of the airport, it is more aided by the government's intervention. I think those strategies have to be thought through. But clearly, you have millions of examples in mainland Europe what recipes to follow if you really want drive your aviation and airline industry and, I think, in the former Yugoslavia it revolves around airport costs and the airport operating environment," Varadi added.

Wizz Air does fly limited services to Split from London, Warsaw, and Katowice, and over the years, they have even operated some other services to Dubrovnik and Zagreb. Recall, Wizz Air first began operations in Croatia in 2009 with a service between Zagreb and Dortmund, though it did not last - and the service between London and Dubrovnik was terminated in 2012.

This winter, only Eurowings will continue operations to the capital, as the airport’s chargers are much higher than many major airports in Europe. Recall, Zagreb Airport upped their fees after the new passenger terminal was built in 2017. What used to be 2 euro for each international passenger is now 17 euro.
