December 7, 2021 - The latest flight news to Croatia as British Airways Zagreb flights resume in December, and Aeroflot will operate between Moscow and Zagreb daily from December 23. 

The British national airline and OneWorld alliance member British Airways resumed regular flights between London and Zagreb in early December, reports Croatian Aviation.

Namely, on December 2 this year, a British Airways A320 aircraft landed again at Zagreb Airport with a total of 103 passengers after a short break. Since the beginning of the pandemic, British Airways has often made operational changes in its flight schedule, with most changes to its Zagreb route, which has been suspended several times for a shorter or longer period.

Zagreb suffered the same fate this autumn, but British Airways has resumed traffic on the route to Zagreb, expecting higher demand in December, as is usually the case, due to the Christmas holidays and New Year's celebrations.

Thus, from December 2 to 31, British Airways will operate a total of 14 return flights between Zagreb and London and offer an additional 5,000 seats. Along with British Airways, Croatia Airlines also operates on this route four times a week, while the Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair flies between Stansted and Zagreb.

According to current announcements, British Airways will stay in Zagreb until January 10 (flights on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays), and then will cancel the route again. For now, only until February 1, but it is expected that the airline will extend flights to Zagreb until spring.

Furthermore, Croatian Aviation reports that the Russian national airline Aeroflot will operate daily between Moscow and Zagreb from December 23 this year.

Aeroflot will send wide-body A330-300 aircraft to Zagreb this December, all due to the increased passenger demand when Russian citizens flocked to the Croatian capital in large numbers for vaccines.

In addition to the previously announced A330-300 aircraft, which will arrive in Zagreb on December 9 and 12, the third A330-300, which will land in the Croatian capital on Thursday, December 16, has been announced in additional changes.

By the end of this year, Aeroflot will offer more than 7,200 seats between Moscow and Zagreb on a total of 19 return flights, with 3 return flights with wide-body aircraft that we could see daily at Dubrovnik Airport this summer and on the last day of the summer season in Split. 

So far, Aeroflot has rarely sent wide-body aircraft to Zagreb, but this was mainly due to cargo. In the winter of 2019, Aeroflot flew to Zagreb on a daily basis using Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft.

December 5, 2021 - Zagreb digital nomads are growing in number, and with endorsements like this from one of the rising stars of the nomad conference speaking scene, a lot more look set to follow. 

Full disclosure - I really like the guy. 

When Tanja Polegubic from Saltwater Nomads, my co-organiser of Zagreb Digital Nomad Week, together with the Zagreb Tourist Board, called me excitedly to say that an Israeli nomad with his own community of 25,000 nomads had agreed to fly to Zagreb to speak at our conference, it didn't register immediately on how significant this could be for the conference, but also for Zagreb's digital nomad story.

His presentation on community building was one of the highlights of the conference (you can watch it above), and I learned a lot about the nomad movement in our week together. I particularly liked his mantra of 'I travel solo, but I never travel alone.' 

A quick interview at the end of the week also produced a rather nice soundbite when he was asked what Zagreb is missing in its digital nomad offer.

"Zagreb ticks all the boxes. The only thing missing in Zagreb are more digital nomads.'

That was in June. In September, Dean was back, this time as the official Zagreb Digital Nomad Ambassador for September. And what a whirlwind it was - I am pretty sure Dean saw more of the city and met more people than I have in my 18 years here. 

And there was almost a tear in his eye, as this man who lives to travel had to move on after his month in Zagreb. It had - it seeemed - captured his heart. 

And then, on the eve of Digital Nomad Week, where he is a speaker tomorrow, he sent me this:

After eight years as a digital nomad, and 100 plus countries traveled, I can confidently announce - the perfect destination for digital nomads and remote professionals is also Zagreb.

Also Zagreb because there is no one-destination-fits-all. ( what is perfect anyway?!)

Some nomads like beach destinations, others prefer snow, I enjoy big cities, and my best friend likes to hide in a remote village. We are diverse & different, and we should celebrate it.

Isn’t that what being a digital nomad all about?

As a digital nomad and a solo world traveler - community is key for me. What I discovered fairly quickly in my journey towards visiting all 196 countries of the world is that places are beautiful, but people, people are what will make this journey special.

Zagreb is not the mecca of nomads, nor the hot-spot for remote-professionals you typically read about in travel magazines - but it has it all - hence why it is now one of multiple cities I enjoy visiting regularly. From one visit to another, the list of friends I am excited to catch-up with is getting longer, as more nomads turn Zagreb into their homebase, thanks to a unique Digital Nomad Visa, allowing nomads to stay up to a year, and have access to banking & health care.

And that’s big, especially if you are tired of monthly visa-runs, or tired of the constant traveling.

I go to Zagreb when I want to sink into a routine, enjoy dinner with the same people week after week, and feel part of the place, rather than a spectator. I go for my calm.

If you are after the extraordinaire, the spectacular, or the heaven on heart - I can direct to places like Japan, Iceland, or Samoa, if you feel at home among the crowd - head to Shanghai, connect with the inner-you - all the way India, Bungee jump - New Zealand is your home.

One you have done exploring - meet me in Zagreb, let’s walk the old streets, pick one of the many bars, and grab a glass of local wine.

The best city for digital nomads is also Zagreb.

I’ve experienced it first hand during my 3rd & longest visit to the city - from the moment I arrived, everything was easy.

Finding a mid-term place to stay, getting familiar with the city layout, public transportation, and mapping the best places for nomads was a breeze thanks for number of resources, all geared towards digital nomads - check out the dedicated page on Zagreb’s board of Tourism, join the Discord chat (how many cities have that?!), connect with locals, and fellow nomads on the Facebook group, and stay up to date with the help of Croatia’s own Digital Nomads Association (how many countries have that?!).

One more factor which made me feel very welcome in Zagreb, is the sincere steps Zagreb’s officials, and the Croatian government are making toward us - digital nomads.

No more vague policy around remote-work in the country, no need to feel we are working from cafes illegally, and finally - a country who recognizes the benefits of hosting remote professionals, and the contribution we make to the local economy, and strong connection we form with the locals.

I am now touring the world, visiting friends in various countries, spending time with my adorable nephews, and pushing towards the goal of visiting all 196 countries of the world, but eventually - I will back to the perfect place for digital nomads - (also) Zagreb.

December 4, 2021 - The latest flight news to Croatia as new Ryanair summer lines from Zagreb, Rijeka, and Zadar have been announced for next year, which are interesting for both tourists and Croatian travelers. 

Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair announces new routes for the 2022 summer flight schedule from three Croatian airports - Rijeka, Zagreb, and Zadar, reports Croatian Aviation and Ex Yu Aviation. 

From Zagreb to:

Bratislava, twice a week, from March 27, 2022, every Wednesday and Sunday, until October 26 next year. There have been no regular lines between the two cities so far.

Corfu, twice a week, from June 4, 2022, every Tuesday and Saturday, until September 27 next year.

So far, there has been no regular line from Zagreb to Corfu. This line will certainly be attractive in the summer, given that an increasing number of Croatian citizens go on summer vacation to Greece. Along with Thessaloniki, Corfu is Ryanair's second destination from Zagreb to Greece.

From Rijeka to:

Stockholm (Arlanda), twice a week, from March 27, 2022, Thursdays and Sundays, to October 27 next year.

Ryanair has operated between the two cities in previous years, but from Skvasta Airport, which is dislocated from Stockholm, so the change in operations in Arland is very positive news for all passengers on this line. This is the third announced Ryanair route for next year from Rijeka, with the addition of lines to Brussels and London.

From Zadar to:

Sofia twice a week, from March 27, 2022, Wednesdays and Sundays, to October 26 next year.

Helsinki, twice a week, from June 3, 2022, Mondays and Fridays, to September 30 next year.

The new additions bring Ryanair’s total number of destinations out of Zagreb to 26, far more than national carrier Croatia Airlines, reports Ex Yu Aviation.

“Ryanair has added 24 routes out of Zagreb, while Croatia Airlines has introduced three in the past three years and been the beneficiary of twelve million euros in state aid. We, on the other hand, receive no subsidies from the government. Croatia Airlines is a distinguished carrier, but it has lost touch with the development of air travel in Croatia, particularly from Zagreb. We do not see them as a competitor because even on the routes we both operate on, we fly to different airports. Ryanair will change travel habits in Zagreb and encourage locals to travel more by air," said Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary on Croatia Airlines’ slow development out of Zagreb before these new lines were announced.

December 3, 2021 - Ryanair Zagreb flights to Basel, Eindhoven, and Paphos are officially taking off today! 

Ryanair operates on three more new routes from Zagreb Airport to three new airports in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Cyprus - Paphos, Eindhoven, and Basel, reports Croatian Aviation.

Zagreb - Basel - Zagreb
Ryanair connects Zagreb and Basel twice a week. Basel Airport is located in France, but an extraterritorial route connects it to the city. Basel is the second-largest city in Switzerland, with approximately 170,000 inhabitants. In addition, a relatively large number of emigrated Croatian citizens live in Basel and the wider region, and an even more significant number of diasporas from Serbia, BiH, and Kosovo.

Zagreb 13:45 - 15:15 Basel 15:40 - 17:10 Zagreb

The Irish low-cost airline will operate on this route twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, in the afternoon, with A320 aircraft. However, it should be noted that Basel is not a big hub for Ryanair; most of the traffic at this airport is generated by the British EasyJet.

Zagreb - Eindhoven - Zagreb

Zagreb Airport is also connected to Eindhoven, the fifth-largest city in the Netherlands, with around 400,000 inhabitants in its urban area. The airport is located very close to the border with Belgium, and due to its location, these flights are used by passengers who continue to Essen, Dortmund, Cologne, or Dusseldorf.

Eindhoven is a large base of Ryanair and Hungarian Wizz Air and Transavia. Transavia operates from Eindhoven to coastal airports in the summer, while there are no scheduled flights in the winter.

Zagreb 17:35 - 19:30 Eindhoven 19:55 - Zagreb 21:50

Ryanair will also use A320 aircraft from the Zagreb base on this route and operate in the afternoon and evening. It is expected that Ryanair will record good results on this line, and ticket prices are currently very affordable.

Zagreb - Paphos - Zagreb

This morning, the third new line took off for Paphos at 6:40 am, connecting Zagreb and Cyprus twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays.

Zagreb 06:40 - 10:35 Paphos 11:00 -12: 55 Zagreb

This line is primarily oriented to Zagreb tourists who travel to Cyprus for a short weekend vacation or longer, especially in the summer months. There have been no regular flights between Cyprus and Zagreb, and traffic at Paphos Airport is mainly due to Ryanair flights.

In addition to these three new lines, new lines to Thessaloniki, Dublin, Manchester, and Malaga also started this week.

December 1, 2021 - A great finish to the November ambassadorship of Rax Suen, as his Zagreb Nomad Panel brought 3 nomad ambassadors together, as well as providing plenty of food for thought at BIZkosnica last night. 

It was a very engaging audience of locals, expats and nomads - the youngest of whom was just 13 - to attend the final night of the ambassadorship of Singaporean digital nomad, Rax Suen. 

Rax chose the popular coworking space at BIZkoshnica on Ilica as his venue, with a very lively afterparty at Swanky Mint Hostel. HIs Nomad Table concept proved to be a hit, with some excellent panelists and a very engaged audience. The panel more than succeeded in its aim of providing insights and tips on building remote careers and travel lifestyle under the title 'How to Become a Digital Nomad'.

Two of the panelists were also introduced as Zagreb Digital Nomad Ambassadors for December. Anna Maria Kochanska from Poland only arrived in the Croatian capital 4 hours before the panel started, but quickly assumed her role as the December ambassadorship with some great contributions. 

She also found time to give TCN an interview at Swanky late in the evening, as the party started to die down. 

Anna Maria is the sixth and final ambassador in the program, which has seen ambassadors and their partners from USA, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Israel, Singapore and now Poland. She will be joined in December by a Zagreb Special Guest Digital Nomad Ambassador. Ohian Steve Tsentserensky has Zagreb in his blood, and he has been a fantastic promoter of Zagreb and Croatia since arriving almost a year ago. I am delighted that Steve got this recognition, thoroughly deserved. 

Rax also sat down with TCN to give his thoughts on a month in Zagreb, finally producing his trademark yellow glasses for the occasion.

December 1, 2021 - Where to take the owner of a Michelin Star restaurant in Zagreb who knows the culinary scene well in the Croatian capital? Restoran Matrix, perhaps.  

One of my favourite people in the world is visiting Zagreb. A hugely successful businessman, whose many accomplishments includes having his own restaurant with a Michelin Star, our occasional lunches are always fun, with interesting food, fantastic wine, and outstanding stories. 

He called the other day to say he was in town with his wife and invited my wife and I for lunch. 

It was more than my turn to organise lunch. The problem was, he knows the gourmet scene in Zagreb much better than me. What could I possibly do to impress him and his lovely wife?

There was only one option I could come up with - the recently opened Restoran Matrix, located in Matrix Office Park. He would certainly not have tried it yet, and possibly not have evn heard of it. 

I extended the invite, and he gratefully accepted, confirming that he had never heard of the place and was always keen to try something new. 

Next, I contacted Manuela Maras, who runs Matrix. 

The instructions were simple. Table for 4 at 13:00. A special foodie friend coming for lunch. A special 5-course meal with wine pairing - dishes to be decided by the chef. 

This is what happened next.

Our afternoon was accompanied every stretch of the way by Alessandra Vekić, Mate oil, one of the 2 best Croatian oil in the world .. Flos Olei 99 points for last year's harvest .. 

Each dish was personally paired by Matrix sommelier Manuela Maras. It is beyond the scope of this fat blogger to recall and write about them all, but this wine, paired with the pigeon, will give some indication. Brkic is one of the top producers in Herzegovina, and there are only 242 bottles of this label produced, with only one place in Croatia that serves it - Matrix. And rather a fine drop it was. 

It had been quite a culinary journey, and my visiting friends deemed the lunch a great success. So much so in fact that they went in to congratulate young chef, Marko Jantolek, and to make arrangments for both chefs to meet and swap experiences. 

I went over to settle the bill with a little bit of foreboding. How much would such hedonisticfun for four actually cost? And that was the final surprise of an excellent afternoon. A little more expensive than my usual mixed grill for sure, but far less than I was expecting.

December 1, 2021 - With Seck Zeen Hong in the leading role, "Crisis" is the first Korean-Croatian film and first Croatian film starring an Asian actor in the main role. Shot in Zagreb during the pandemic, the coming of age drama about a young Korean man seeking to adapt to a new society has already been selected at two film festivals.

In a year where Croatian cinema has not gone unnoticed at international festivals, a short fiction film arrives to join the celebrations and mark a couple of historical milestones along the way. Crisis (Kriza in Croatian, 위기 in Korean), was created and produced by Benjamin Noah Maričak, directed by Boris Vuković, and written by Karla Leko; as part of their graduate work at the University of Zagreb - Academy of Dramatic Art, and it is the first Croatian-Korean film and the first Croatian film starring an Asian actor in the main role. The film was shot in the city of Zagreb during the current pandemic, and it was completed on June 23 of this year.

With a runtime of 14 minutes and 58 seconds, and featuring both Croatian and Korean languages, Crisis follows the day in the life of 20 something-year-old Ji-Hu (Zeen Hong) who is working for his father's Korean restaurant in the heart of Zagreb, as the delivery boy, during the beginning stages of the worldwide lockdown caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic. Throughout his delivery runs across Zagreb, he will not only have to deal with the constant pressure from his father and an odd variety of customers but also trying to adjust in a world where he still hasn’t found his place yet.

Seck Zeen Hong stars as Ji-Hu, a young Korean in his twenties, trying to adjust in the Croatian capital of Zagreb and dealing with pressure from his father, played by You Kwang Kim. Seck Zeen Hong becomes the first Asian actor to play a leading role in a Croatian film.

Everything seems to indicate that the coming of age family drama filmed in the Croatian capital has been well received, since to date the short film has been selected in the official program of two film festivals, confirms the producer and creator of Crisis, Benjamin Noah Maričak. The Asian premiere of the first Korean-Croatian film will be at the Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF), the largest film festival in Bangladesh. The short film, which features photography by Marko Milohnić and editing by Marta Bregeš, will be part of the festival's official program in the Short & Independent Film Section. The DIFF will be held from January 15th to 22nd, 2022.

In addition, for the local public, Crisis was also accepted in the official program of the CIiklop Film Festival, which will take place in Benkovac, near the city of Zadar. The dates of the Ciklop Film Festival will be from December 18th to 22nd of this year. The official program with the full list of selected films will be published very soon.

Crisis is the first Korean-Croatian film, and it was shot entirely in Zagreb. In this still from the film, you can see the famous brutalist residential buildings known as Rakete, built in 1968.

December 1, 2021 - The latest flight news to Croatia as 70 KLM Split and Zagreb flights will run this December!

Dutch KLM will continue to operate daily between Amsterdam and Zagreb in December, and due to increased demand around Christmas and New Year, KLM will resume traffic between Split and Amsterdam just like last winter, reports Croatian Aviation.

KLM planes will land at Zagreb Airport every day in December. Two flights a day have been announced, with only one daily flight announced for December 26. 

The morning departure from Zagreb to Amsterdam is mainly made with an E175 aircraft with 88 seats. Around Christmas, a larger aircraft, E190, was announced. In addition, E190 aircraft with 100 seats were announced for the afternoon rotation from Zagreb to Amsterdam. From December 6 to 17, smaller E175 aircraft will also be used on this rotation. In the second half of the month, 100 seats per direction will be available again on the afternoon flight.

KLM will operate 40 return flights with E175 aircraft to Zagreb (7,040 seats) and 21 return flights with E190 aircraft (4,200 seats) in December, offering 11,240 seats.

KLM aircraft will return to Split Airport in the second half of December. Flights have been announced for Christmas and New Year. In December, 6 return flights were announced, three with B737-700 aircraft and three with B737-800 aircraft. KLM will offer 1,968 seats between Split and Amsterdam in December and additional seats available at the beginning of January next year.

After introducing the second daily flight to Zagreb, KLM is the dominant carrier, and a relatively large number of passengers choose the services of this airline to travel between the two cities and continue traveling to other destinations in Europe and the world. 

The Croatian national airline, Croatia Airlines, continues to operate daily between Amsterdam and Zagreb. Flights from Zagreb take off in the morning upon the arrival of planes from Sarajevo, Split, and Dubrovnik, so it is possible to continue the journey from these cities to the capital of the Netherlands.

According to available information, Croatia Airlines will operate most of its flights in December with A319 aircraft. A smaller DashQ400 aircraft was announced on only two dates - December 1 and December 8. In addition to KLM, Croatia Airlines will offer an additional 8,368 seats between Amsterdam and Zagreb on its flights this month.

November the 30th, 2021 - Parts of the City of Zagreb have been left without heating as temperatures plummet and a harsh frost covers the now hardened off dead leaves which cover the ground. The situation with Zagreb heating should be solved at some point during the day.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, there is currently no heating in the Western part of Zagreb this morning, which is just what everyone wants when temperaturs dropped to -3 here in the capital at 06:00 this morning. Residents of Spansko and Malesnica have definitely been left without heating, and it also seems that residents living around Lake Jarun are also in the same boat today. In addition, some residents of Precko, Gajnice and Rudes have been taking to social media to complain of the same issue.

''Our boys are still out in the field and we're waiting for their return. We had a situation last night around 01:00 and we're informing our heating service users of what happened. We assume that the problem will be solved during the day,'' HEP said when questioned by 24sata.

A full statement from HEP on the unfortunate Zagreb heating situation soon arrived:

A hot water pipe burst in Tresnjevka and the western part of the city was left without heating and hot water. HEP predicts that this will be the case until late in the evening. They added that the pipe burst due to its old age of the hot water network and corrosion caused by the spillage of rainwater mixed with the means used to treat pavements in winter.

Due to the rupture of the hot water pipeline in Tresnjevka in Losinjska street and near Jarun in Hrvoje Macanovic street, this morning, the supply of thermal energy to all end customers in the western part of the city of Zagreb was suspended. HEP-Heating employees have started with the emergency repairs of the rupture, after which the supply of thermal energy will be re-established. The estimated duration of the suspension is until late in the evening today.

The reasons for the rupture of the hot water pipeline are the age of this section of the hot water pipeline network and the corrosion of the pipes caused by the spillage of rainwater mixed with the means used to treat the surface of pavements in winter. The sections of the hot water pipeline in question that were broken didn't include the works of revitalisation of the hot water network that were carried out this summer as part of the ''Revitalisation of the hot water network in the City of Zagreb" project, however, the plan is to totally replace them over the next two years. HEP-Heating employees are making every effort to repair the hot water pipe bursts as soon as possible, and they're asking end customers for their patience and understanding,'' HEP announced.

November 30, 2021 - Month 5 of the Zagreb Digital Nomad Ambassador project is coming to an end, with no less than 3 ambassadors taking part in tonight's Nomad Table hosted by Rax Suen.  

I was not quite sure what to expect when Rax Suen from Singapore was selected as the Zagreb Digital Nomad Ambassador for November, but I knew it would take this excellent project into a new direction. And so it has proved. Rax is the first Asian ambassador, and his perspectives on the potential of both Zagreb and Croatia regarding the digital nomad community have been particularly insightful.

And I think this young man from Singapore has had a little fun along the way, despite the fact that November is perhaps not the most attractive month to visit. One highlight was certainly the outstanding Michelin Starry Nights in Dubrava, raising money to dig wells in Uganda, above. 

Rax is holding his final event this evening at BIZkoshnica coworking space at Ilica 71 at 18:00 (all welcome), when he will be handing over ambassadorial duties to our final ambassador, Anna Maria Kochanska from Poland.

Anna Maria is arriving this afternoon and will be put straight to work at Rax's final event and Nomad Panel and after party at BIZkoshnica.

Actually, Anna Maria is not quite the final ambassador of the project. The project organisers - Saltwater Nomads, TCN, Doma Zagreb and Zagreb Tourist Board also wanted to recognise the efforts of a young American whose blood has been infected with a love of Zagreb, and whose pro bono promotional efforts of Zagreb and Croatia in general have been among the most effective of any this year.
