Taking place this week from September 8-9, Trg Pet Bunara in Zadar will host the 9th annual Fig Festival. There will also be workshops and activities following the days after the festival.
For the ninth time this year, the Fig Festival promotes this fruit in all its many forms - whether they’re fresh, dried, in a jam, in a salad, roasted, or eaten with goat cheese.
In addition to being a fruit that is packed with healthy qualities like antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and loads of fiber, figs contain 88 percent water - and 100 grams of figs only has 80 calories! This sweet and healthy delicacy is surely deserving of a festival all to their own.
The fig tree actually first arrived in Croatia thanks to the Greeks and Phoenicians, and today fig trees are prominent on the west coast of Istria and wholly in Dalmatia. In Croatia, figs are used and eaten fresh or dried, in jams, brandy, and even used for medicine.
