ZAGREB, 9 Feb 2022 - Organisers of the Terry Fox Run in Croatia have donated HRK 50,000 raised in this year's anti-cancer week to Dr. Mladen Ćepulić, Department of Oncology and Haematology at the Children's Hospital Zagreb.

The Terry Fox Run has been organised in Croatia since 2000 and has raised almost HRK 7 million in that time for cancer research. Due to the pandemic, this year's event was organised online.

The director of the Children's Hospital, Goran Roić, said on Wednesday that the recovery rate in children is more than 80%, however treatment is often complicated. This year's donation will be used to improve rehabilitation and early intervention in children who experience complications after oncology therapy.

Canadian Ambassador to Croatia Alan Bowman expressed his satisfaction that so many people in Croatia participated in the Terry Fox Runt this year as well and raised money for cancer research.

Terry Fox is a Canadian national hero who started a marathon that today takes place in over 60 countries, with millions of people running in honour of his passion for running and his desire to beat cancer. Fox lost a leg to cancer and in 1980, in order to raise money for treatment, he embarked on a run across Canada which he called the Marathon of Hope. He ran 143 days, covering 42 km a day, but failed to finish the run because his cancer returned, claiming his life at age 22.

ZAGREB, July 25 (Hina) - Health Minister Vili Beros on Saturday visited the children's hospital in downtown Zagreb which was flooded in last night's heavy rain, saying the costs of dealing with the damage would be covered by the hospital, the city, and his ministry.

Hospital director Goran Roic told Hina the biggest damage was done to the pharmacy in the basement, where the cafeteria, locker room and radiology ward were also flooded.

Other hospital services are working normally, he said.

Visiting the hospital, Minister Beros said the hospital pharmacy stored very expensive drugs so the damage was yet to be estimated.

"However, the provision of healthcare is not undermined at this moment. But the corona crisis, the earthquake, and now flooding have only highlighted the need to build a new national children's hospital. Many only talked about it, but this government has recognized this need and included this idea into its programme for the coming period, and I as minister will do my best so that it is realised."

A feasibility study is being done for the Blato location and when it is done, we will see whether it's the best location, Beros said.

As for the financing of the new hospital, he said everything would be done to find the fastest solution. "Whether it's EU funds is difficult to say because the procedure is long, and we can now see how long the feasibility study is taking," Beros said, adding that "we are also looking at other financing possibilities for the construction of these health facilities that we urgently need."

Beros said he had talked with the directors of most of Zagreb's hospitals and that none had reported any major damage after last night's storm.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 13th of April, 2019, the national children's hospital project is now finally entering a much more serious phase, and the Croatian Ministry of Health and the City of Zagreb, which are partners on this strategic project, will finally present it to the public in full, according to a report from Vecernji list, citing an international public bid to draw up a feasibility study for the huge project in Blato, Zagreb.

The feasibility study is necessary for this project because it will properly specify the requirements of the architecture, the urban planning, the ecological impact, the traffic situation, and all of the other parameters which need to be carefully considered and constructed, and one of the feasibility study elements would be the preparation of medical documentation.

Fifteen of the major international bidders are expected to report their segment-based studies, each within its own respective scope, and therefore a comprehensive study will ultimately define just what will go where, and where exactly to begin with construction. The start of work on feasibility studies from the project's partners, the Croatian Ministry of Health and the City of Zagreb, will be presented on this coming Monday, as was confirmed to Večernji list by Vili Beroš from the Ministry of Health.

"We received 42 million kuna from the Competitiveness and Cohesion 2014 - 2020 project, which is now a European project, and its initial presentation is common within such projects," explained Beroš.

The announcement of this tender was preceded by an electronic public consultation with all interested parties.
