Welcome to Total Zagreb

Welcome to Zagreb, not only the capital of the EU's youngest member, but also a booming tourist hotspot. More than a million tourists overnighted in Zagreb in 2015, the only destination to do so in Croatia.

It is the business hub, the entertainment centre and the source of much of what goes on in the country, and so we have decided to launch our latest site, Total Zagreb, to keep local expats informed of what is going on, as well as cater to the information needs of the growing number of tourists.

In addition to the standard info features of accommodation, activities and where to eat, drink and party, we also have a comprehensive event calendar (and you are welcome to add your events), as well as various features, such as Healthy Zagreb, Run Zagreb and other niche sectors of Zagreb. If you would like to contribute your views of life on Zagreb, why not write for us? Please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We will be blogging daily, and if you have a feature you would like us to cover, get in touch.

Flights to Dubrovnik: United Touches Down from New York 1 Month Earlier than 2021

May 29, 2022 - A boost for tourism in Dubrovnik, as the first United Air Lines flight from New York landed yesterday,  a month earlier than last year.   Things are starting to return to a semblance of normal.  The important North American tourism market, long in love with the majesty of Dubrovnik, is beginning to reengage with the Pearl of the Adriatic after the COVID-19 interruption. Last year, Dubrovnik was connected to New York directly for the first time, but not one but two major carriers - Delta and United. So happy were United with the new route that they…

Croatian Sculptor Spends Hours Liberating his Piece "Vodan"

September 13, 2020 - The Croatian media reported about the sculpture near the Sava river earlier this year, in January. Now it's back in the news, as its author had to do more work on the favorite piece.  Robert Zdarilek (65) is a Croatian sculptor who spent years creating the sculpture right next to the Sava river, close to the iconic Hendrix Bridge in Zagreb (we've written about that bridge previously). During one of his regular walks along the Sava, he found one of the rocks from an old bridge protruding from the mud and decided to turn it into…

Let's Take a Walk Along the Črnomerec Creek

February 29, 2020 - Last year, we wrote about the attempts by the members of civil societies to save the Črnomerec creek from building a road over it, and create a green oasis in the city around it. The portion of the creek which is in danger of being destroyed is south of the Ilica street and all the way down to the Jarun Lake. Today, we take you on a walk along the northern portion of the creek, north of Ilica, and towards the Medvednica hill. On a graphic posted below (which I found on Spasimo potok Črnomerec FB…

Another Line of Credit for Sljeme Cable Car Construction?

Much has been said in the Croatian media about the ambitious plans for the construction of the Sljeme cable car, which was supposed to replace the old, now defunct, cable car. The old Sljeme cable car (Sljemenska žičara) operated between 1963 and 2007, when it was permanently closed. And practically since its shut-down, Mayor Bandić has been announcing the construction of the new, improved cable car which would take citizens of Zagreb and the tourists to the top of the Medvednica mountain, located just to the North of Zagreb. Last year the old pillars were removed, and this year the…
