Zagreb University

By 19 January 2017

The main administrative building of Zagreb University is located right across the street from the Croatian National Theatre. The University, which was founded in 1669, is the oldest in Croatia, and it currently consists of 29 faculties and three academies.

The building was originally a hospital, and now, in addition to being the main administrative building of the entire University, it also houses the Faculty of Law, one of its biggest faculties.

The sculpture in front of the entrance was made by Ivan Meštrović. It’s a popular patriotic symbol called History of the Croats which shows a sculpture of a seated woman holding a stone tablet with words written in Glagolythic alphabet, symbolizing the calm and strength of mothers, who are the keepers of Croatian tradition and history.
