See in Zagreb

The Croatian National Theatre

By 19 January 2017

There were various smaller theatres in Zagreb in the 19th ct, but the city lacked a majestic national theatre building, like the ones that existed in most European capitals at the time.

This is why two Viennese architects, Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer, designed the beautiful yellow Neo-Baroque building, which opened in 1895, and which is now the centre of Zagreb’s cultural life because it houses the national opera, ballet, and drama companies under the same roof. You can find the schedule here.

The gardens are a popular place for people to sit down and enjoy the sunshine, especially when they’re filled with colorful flowers during springtime.

The Well of life, one of the most popular works by sculptor Ivan Meštrović, was placed in front of the Theatre in 192. It consist of a pool surrounded by sculptures of people of various ages reaching into it, their rhythmic movement symbolizing the human lust for life and showing their gentle and carefree side with its soft forms.
