Art Pavilion (Umjetnički paviljon)

By 27 January 2017

Built in 1898, this beautiful building is the oldest gallery in the Southeast Europe. The pavilion was purposefully built for Croatian artists to display their art at the Millennium Exhibition in Budapest in 1896. The iron skeleton was designed so that it could easily be transferred back to Zagreb after the Exhibition. Austrian architects Fellner and Helmer, who had designed the Croatian National Theatre building a few years before that, were hired to design a new building, and they decorated the facade with the busts of Croatian and international artists.

The exhibitions change, so the gallery doesn’t have a permanent display, and the 600m² of space has been home to more than 700 exhibitions by Croatian and international artists.
