ZAGREB, 8 Oct 2021 - Visits to prison inmates and persons in custody, notably those at Zagreb's Remetinec prison, have not been allowed over the past month due to coronavirus having entered the prison system, the Večernji List daily of Friday reports.

Inmates have also not been able to exercise their right to spend some weekends outside the prison system.

The Justice and Public Administration Ministry says the Prison Administration Department has been implementing a set of measures since the start of the pandemic to prevent the virus from entering and spreading in the prison system.

Under one of those measures, before prisons were last closed for visitors, only visitors who were vaccinated, had recovered from COVID-19 or had a negative test not older than 48 hours were allowed to make a visit.

Nonetheless, this did not prevent the virus from entering the system and according to this week's data from the ministry, 23 inmates and persons in custody at Remetinec are infected while 110 are self-isolating.

In the entire prison system, 27 inmates are infected and 127 are in self-isolation.

The ministry notes that no employees at Remetinec are infected or in self-isolation.

Since the start of the pandemic, 2,321 inmates and 1,598 employees in the prison system have been vaccinated.

The exact number of persons tested and infected in the prison system will be known once the report on the state and work of penitentiaries, prisons and correctional facilities for 2021 is released, the daily says.

ZAGREB, 7 Oct 2021 - In the past 24 hours, 1,748 coronavirus cases and eight related deaths have been registered in Croatia, the national COVID-19 crisis management team said on Thursday.

There are 9,299 active cases, including 823 hospitalized patients, of whom 119 are on ventilators, while 16,379 persons are self-isolating.

Croatia has logged 413,665 coronavirus cases to date, 8,730 deaths, and 395,636 recoveries, including 1,254 in the past 24 hours.

Also, 2,885,071 persons have been tested for the virus, including 10,592 in the past 24 hours.

54% of adults vaccinated

To date, 45.39% of the population has been vaccinated against COVID, including 54.44% of adults, of whom 51.07% are fully vaccinated.

ZAGREB, 6 Oct, 2021 - Croatia registered 1,925 new cases of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours while 18 people died as a consequence, and there are currently 8,813 active cases in the country, the national COVID response team reported on Wednesday.

There are 820 hospitalised patients and 116 are on ventilators, while 16,186 people are self-isolating.

To date, 411,917 cases of contagion have been registered and 8,722 people have died, while 394,382 people have recovered. A total of 2,874,479 tests have been conducted, including 10,083 in the past 24 hours.

54.31% of the adult population vaccinated

As of Tuesday, 3,460,702 doses of vaccines had been administered, and 45.28% of the total population or 54.31% of the adult population had received at least one dose of a vaccine.

Yesterday, 8,144 people were vaccinated, of whom 5,073 received the first dose.

A total of 1,837,585 people have received at least one dose of a vaccine, while 1,721,731 have been fully vaccinated, which makes up 50.97% of the adult population.

ZAGREB, 3 Oct, 2021 - Croatia has registered 944 new coronavirus cases and 14 COVID-19-related deaths over the past 24 hours,, the national COVID-19 crisis management team said on Sunday.

The number of active cases stands at 9,069.

There are 779 infected persons receiving hospital treatment, and 95 of them are on ventilators.

Since 25 February 2020, when the first case was confirmed in Croatia, 408,699 people have been registered as having contracted the novel coronavirus, and 8,678 of them have died, while 390,952 have recovered, including 1,082 in the last 24 hours. Currently, there are 20,198 people in self-isolation.

To date, 2,852,044 people have been tested, 9,005 of whom over the past 24 hours.

As at 2 October, 3,447,108 vaccine doses have been administered, with 45.08% of the total population, or 54,07% of the adult population, having been vaccinated. 1,829,251 people have received at least one dose and of them 1,714,992 have been fully vaccinated, which is 50.78% of the adult population.

The number of active cases now stands at 8,990, and 738 infected persons are receiving hospital treatment, including 99 who are on ventilators.

Since 25 February 2020, when the first case was confirmed in Croatia, 406,307 people have been registered as having contracted the novel virus, of whom 8,650 have died and 388,667 have recovered, including 1,392 in the last 24 hours. 23,044 people are currently self-isolating.

To date, 2,833,156 people have been tested for the virus, including 10,126 in the last 24 hours.

A total of 3,436,799 doses of vaccines have been administered, with 44.92 percent of the total population, or 53.89 percent of adults, having been vaccinated. 1,822,966 people have received at least one dose and 1,709,647 have been fully vaccinated, which makes up 50.62 percent of the adult population.

ZAGREB, 29 Sept, 2021 - Croatia has registered 1,911 new coronavirus cases and 14 COVID-19-related deaths in the last 24 hours, the national coronavirus response team reported on Wednesday.

The number of active cases now stands at 8,101, and 745 infected persons are receiving hospital treatment, including 99 who are on ventilators.

Since 25 February 2020, when the first case was confirmed in Croatia, 403,080 people have been registered as having contracted the novel virus, of whom 8,628 have died and 386,351 have recovered, including 896 in the last 24 hours. 21,164 people are currently self-isolating.

To date, 2,813,356 people have been tested for the virus, including 10,148 in the last 24 hours.

A total of 3,419,381 doses of vaccines have been administered, with 44.66 percent of the total population, or 53.59 percent of adults, having been vaccinated. 1,812,532 people have received at least one dose and 1,700,089 have been fully vaccinated (1,606,849 people have received two vaccine doses and 93,240 have received the single-dose Jannsen vaccine), which makes up 50.34 percent of the adult population.

ZAGREB, 28 Sept, 2021 - The Croatian Chamber of Nurses (HKMS) has distanced itself from unscientific and unprofessional views on vaccination against COVID-19, spread by some of the nurses.

"A large number of nurses have been vaccinated, notably 72 percent of them, and the Chamber once again calls on all nurses to get vaccinated and thus protect their health and the health of their patients," the HKMS said in a statement on Tuesday.

The dissemination of untrue and scientifically uncorroborated information, especially when it comes from nurses, makes the fight against the epidemic and efforts to increase the vaccination rate difficult and undermines trust in the healthcare system, it added.

The HKMS stressed the importance of vaccination as the only effective way to overcome the epidemic and get life back to normal.

Many of our nurse colleagues treat hospitalised patients for serious forms of COVID-19 and many of them see their patients, most of whom have not been vaccinated, die, the HKMS said, reminding nurses that "nursing is a medical profession and our public discourse must be based on the results of medical science."

ZAGREB, 28 Sept, 2021 - In the last 24 hours Croatia has conducted 9,257 coronavirus tests, and 1,061 of them, (11.5%) have returned positive, whereas eight more COVID patients have died, raising the COVID-19 death toll to 8,614, the national COVID-19 crisis management team reported on Tuesday.

There are currently 7,100 active cases, and of them 738 are receiving hospital treatment including 102 patients placed on ventilators.

Since the first registered case of the infection with the novel virus in Croatia in late February 2020, the country has conducted over 2.8 million tests that have shown that 401,169 people have contracted the virus, and of them 385,455 have recovered, including 1,098 recoveries in the last 24 hours.

As many as 22,467 people are self-isolating.

To date, over 3.4 million vaccine doses have been administered, and 44.46% of the total population or 53.48% of the adult population have been vaccinated.

Every second adult Croat has fully been inoculated to date.

September 27, 2021 - The Croatian National Security Report 2021 says Croatia is a stable democracy, but some issues which need to have an eye kept on them have been revealed.

Like any country which cares about national security, Croatia has its own intelligence agency. Croatia's Security and Intelligence Agency (acronym, or in spy terms, code name SOA) collects and analyses information in an attempt to detect and prevent the activities of individuals or groups that threaten the independence, integrity, and sovereignty of the Republic of Croatia, and/or those who aim at violently overthrowing constitutional order. Additionally, let's suppose you're in Croatia and you try threatening human rights and basic freedoms or want to endanger the fundaments of the economic system of the Republic of Croatia, in that case, you will also make it to the list of this organization.

''SOA also collects and analyses political, economic, scientific-technological and security-related information concerning foreign countries, organisations, political and economic alliances, groups and persons and other information relevant to national security,'' explains SOA's public website.

As Slobodna Dalmacija writes, SOA has so far published seven reports assessing the threats to Croatia's well being previous years. The latest reports, as Slobodna Dalmacija writes, rates Croatia as a safe and stable democracy. However, the pandemic boosted the rise of extremism and radicalism in the country, namely due to disinformation and conspiracy theories in the European and national response to this unprecedented public health crisis.

The terrorist threat in Croatia is low but not completely out of the equation.

As TCN wrote back in October 2020, a policeman was wounded on St Mark's square (Markov trg) in Zagreb (which is home to both the parliament and governmental building) by 20-year-old Danijel Bezuk, who, shortly after the incident and while on the run, took his own life.

''SOA states that the attack had the features of a terrorist assault from the extreme right spectrum and the gathered data suggest a psychological disorder of someone with a disassociative, bipolar personality. However, no type of extremism has significant basis nor public support and therefore no potential for endangering national security,'' writes Slobodna Dalmacija.

Nonetheless, more serious threats have been identified and explained.

When it comes to internal threats, corruption should come as no surprise. Criminal organisations and individuals, SOA warns, try to illegally affect public representatives.

''The attempts of corruptive influence on political, legal, economic and other processes and on public interest decision making processes are particularly worrying,'' says Slobodna Dalmacija in following SOA's report. Looking at solely external threats, the tensions between EU and Russia didn't bypass Croatia as SOA confirmed 12 state-sponsored cybernetic attacks in Croatia which came with a Russian signature.

Additionally, tensions in neighbouring countries need to be observed closely from the perspective of Croatian national security, warns SOA.

''The report states that Greater Serbian extremism is still present in certain neighbouring countries, and this is evident in their denying Croatia and neighbouring countries their territorial integrity,'' Slobodna Dalmacija reports.

Following previous TCN writing, this is clearly a reference to the tensions in Montenegro as well as Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić's calls on ethnic Serbs in Croatia to raise Serbian banners in the country. When it comes to Bosnia and Herzegovina, radical Islam, which also questions the integrity and values of both democracy and territorial borders, is also a reason for serious concern.

ZAGREB, 27 Sept 2021 - In the past 24 hours 217 coronavirus cases and 11 related deaths have been confirmed in Croatia, the national COVID-19 crisis management team said on Monday.

There are 7,145 active cases and 720 hospitalized patients, including 97 on ventilators, while 23,204 persons are self-isolating.

Croatia has registered 400,108 coronavirus cases to date as well as 8,606 deaths and 384,357 recoveries, including 1,245 in the past 24 hours.

To date, 2,793,951 persons have been tested for the virus, including 3,016 in the past 24 hours, and 44.5% of the population has been vaccinated, including 53.39% of adults, of whom 50.15% fully.
