Protective Masks No Longer Mandatory In Classrooms

ZAGREB, 24 Feb 2022 - Education Minister Radovan Fuchs on Thursday said that students and teachers would no longer be required to wear masks during lessons as of Monday and that restrictions related to excursions and outdoor lessons would be relaxed.

"As we announced, as of next week masks will no longer be required during classes," Minister Fuchs told reporters after the cabinet meeting, adding that the decision was coordinated with the Croatian Public Health Institute and epidemiologists.

Masks will still be required in public transport and hallways in schools.

Wearing protective masks will no longer be mandatory for teachers, many of whom are vaccinated and who are also tested for coronavirus.

This decision comes after implementing self-testing of students, the minister underscored. In the first week of self-testing, almost 2,000 asymptomatic positive cases were identified and now there is barely some twenty-odd.

Self-testing of students will continue but there won't be any self-isolation, he said.

Instructions will be published today or tomorrow, said Fuchs, adding that measures regarding excursions and outdoor lessons will be relaxed.

He added that children can continue to wear masks if their parents wish them to and also it is recommended that children with underlying conditions should continue to wear masks.

Covid Measures at Croatian Sporting Events Could be Mitigated, Says Capak

February 22, 2022 - Covid measures at Croatian sporting events could be mitigated from next week, says the director of the Croatian Public Health Institute (HZJZ), Krunoslav Capak.

The Croatian Football League has not seen a season so intense for a long time. However, while Dinamo, Osijek, Hajduk, and Rijeka are leading a relentless race for first place in the standings, the stadium capacity has been reduced due to epidemiological measures. Namely, 40 percent of the seats in the stands can be filled, but that could change soon, reports Index.hr.

Namely, the figures show that the coronavirus pandemic is entering a calmer phase and that mitigating epidemiological measures could therefore be considered. One of these measures is to restrict entry to stadiums. The question of whether to increase the capacity of football stadiums was asked to the director of the Croatian Public Health Institute (HZJZ), Krunoslav Capak.

"Epidemiological measures will be mitigated when epidemiological preconditions are created. As for sporting events, they are also considered. When preconditions are created, measures will be mitigated, but the decision is up to the Headquarters. HZJZ only proposes recommendations," Capak said.

However, it is unlikely that total stadium capacity will be allowed immediately. It is much more likely that, depending on the epidemiological conditions in the country, the number of fans allowed in stadiums will gradually increase. This will likely not happen this weekend when the Hajduk - Rijeka, and Osijek - Dinamo matches are played in the HNL.

The date when a decision could be made on a possible increase in stadium capacity is March 1. The number of newly infected people in Croatia today is 4334, but the situation in hospitals has stabilized. As the directors of KBC Rijeka and Split, Alen Ružić and Julija Meštrović, said yesterday, there are half as many Covid patients in hospitals as three weeks ago and half as many patients on a respirator.

Covid Measures in Slovenia Dropped from Today: Should Croatia Follow Suit?

February 21, 2022 -  As Covid measures in Slovenia become a thing of the past, should its neighbor Croatia follow suit?

"The measures introduced by the headquarters have proved ineffective and should be considered to be removed because if they are not effective, then it is unnecessary to have them."

Today, Slovenia takes a step towards the life we once knew. COVID certificates will generally no longer be needed anywhere, travelers will no longer have to qualify to be vaccinated, recovered, or get tested, and the same is true for employees, reports Novi List

There are no more restrictions on the number of guests in restaurants and cafes, and nightclubs are starting to operate. The self-testing of students, which Croatia is only beginning to implement, is being abolished, but the basic measures remain in force - masks, disinfection, and distance.

There are no such announcements in Croatia yet.

Although the number of newly infected people in Croatia decreases, there are no announcements of lifting the measures currently in place.

"Each state, according to the epidemiological situation, assesses when it is time to repeal or strengthen a measure. We have seen a decline in the number of the newly infected in recent days, but these are still high numbers. As a result, we have high numbers of patients in hospitals and many deaths," said Vesna Višekruna Vučina, epidemiologist of the Croatian Institute of Public Health, for RTL.

Scientist Ivan Đikić said that measures in Croatia had not yielded results, many were introduced too late, and people do not adhere to them.

"The measures we have, such as COVID certificates and other measures introduced by the headquarters, have proved ineffective and should be considered to be removed because if they are not effective, then it is unnecessary to have them," said Djikic.

So, should Croatia abolish all remaining epidemiological measures?
