Croatia's Leading Dairy Producer Increases Buy-Up Price Of Milk

ZAGREB, 16 March 2022 - Dukat continues to increase the buy-up price of milk from its sub-contractors, which will go up by HRK 0.15 per litre as of 1 April and by an additional HRK 0.10 as of 1 May, the Zagreb-based dairy company stated on Wednesday.

In addition to the increases in the price for purchased milk in January and March, the aggregate rise will be HRK 0.50 per litre, Dukat's director Duško Glišić, said, according to a press release.

Dukat says it is aware of difficulties faced by small farms due to the higher input costs and disturbances on the global food market, and although it itself is under pressure from increasing input costs, it will do its utmost to help its sub-contractors in milk production.

Dukat noted that Croatia is not self-sufficient in primary milk production.

"We acknowledge the efforts by the government and the relevant ministry to help farmers, and we urge the authorities to make additional efforts to help preserve the primary milk production," Glišić was quoted as saying.

Dukat buys up milk in 15 counties and cooperates with 1,600 producers, half of whom are small milk farms.

HPK: Croatia to Ask EU for €2m in Aid for Dairy Sector

ZAGREB, 23 July 2021 - The grave situation in the dairy sector, caused by rising costs due to growing prices of cereals and fodder, has prompted the agriculture ministry to ask the EU for HRK 15 million (€2m) in aid for fodder supplies for local milk producers, the Croatian Chamber of Agriculture (HPK) said on Friday.

The HPK said in a press release that representatives of Croatian dairies, the HPK and Agriculture Minister Marija Vučković held talks on Thursday on the serious situation in the dairy sector.

One of the conclusions of the meeting is that the ministry should ask the EU for HRK 15 million in aid for the procurement of fodder.

Direct Help: Order From a Petrinja OPG, Small Producer, Family Farm

January 9, 2021 – The area affected by the devastating earthquake of 29 December 2020 is mostly rural. People there live off the land. They employ others at family farms and as small scale producers. Ordering from a Petrinja OPG or one from the surroundings directly helps families and the economy of the earthquake-affected area, so here's a list detailing them

Alongside the outpourings of sympathy and promise of prayers, since the large earthquakes of December 2020 struck Sisak-Moslavina County, Total Croatia News has been inundated with requests from regular readers and other asking how they can directly and effectively help. TCN has tried to answer all enquiries the best we can and has striven towards directing donors to the best-placed outlets.

Certainly, the rebuild of the communities and economies in places like Petrinja, Glina, Sisak and hundreds of surrounding villages, hamlets and settlements will take months, even years. As TCN discovered after we visited the affected region one day after the earthquake, this area is predominantly rural. People here live off the land, from agricultural endeavours. Small producers and family farms make up much of the economy. In a year where such producers have been hard hit by travel restrictions and other aspects of the pandemic, the livelihoods of many have been shattered by the subsequent earthquake.

In a pro-active, helpful and exhaustive piece of data collection, writer Antonia Dobrota and the team at Croatian-language tourism portal cimerfraj have over recent days come up with an inspired suggestion of how [people can directly help the economies and people of the affected region. They have published a list of as many small producers, family farms and Petrinja OPG producers, plus those in surrounding areas.

garden-5385995_1280.jpg

By ordering food, produce and goods like pottery from this list, people can spend their money directly within the economies of the affected area – no suspicion, no doubt, no middlemen, no staffing costs deducted. It is an inspired decision to construct (and continually update) such a list. Bravo, Antonia and cimerfraj! Several Croatian-language media outlets have since republished the list. Total Croatia News is pleased to do so in English. We warmly encourage its use, not only now, but in the months that follow.

Being small producers and family farms, most of the producers below are not only vital to others in the local communities (by offering employment opportunities), their goods are almost exclusively organic and produced in a traditional, eco-friendly manner. Any orders should be submitted with the utmost confidence.

(OPG is a designation in Croatia that is given specifically to family farms and small, community producers)

Cimerfraj add the following notes:

This list includes all small producers and family farms from the earthquake-affected settlements and the surrounding areas. At the time of compiling the list, we do not know whether these manufacturers are harmed or not, nor do we consider this important. We believe that synergy is necessary in order to initiate the balanced development of favorable existential opportunities for life in this area.

Due to some parts of the area currently being poorly covered by phone and internet signal, some of the manufacturers are easier to contact by text message, SMS or WhatsApp.

The list is still being updated. If you know of a domestic manufacturer from the affected area who is not currently included, please send all relevant details to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Dukat Ready to Buy Up Milk from Meggle Contract Farmers

ZAGREB, July 22, 2020 - The Dukat company is willing to buy up milk from Meggle contract farmers, the Zagreb-based company stated on Wednesday after recently Meggle announced that it would shut down its plant in Osijek.

Dukat recalls that it cooperates with more than 2,000 small, medium and big milk producers throughout Croatia.

"The milk production in Slavonia must not cease," says Dukat.

The decision made by Meggle Croatia prompted Agriculture Minister Marija Vuckovic and local authorities to hold a meeting with Meggle executives on Tuesday. After the meeting, the minister reassured contract farmers in the Osijek area that the buying up of their dairy products would continue.

Vuckovic said that all 280 contract farmers of Meggle Croatia should rest assured that the buying up of their products would continue. The 280 contract farmers have between 25,000 and 26,000 kilos of milk for sale. Dukat's representatives also attended the meeting.

Green-Left Coalition for Reviving Dairy Industry

ZAGREB, July 20, 2020 - The Green-Left Coalition said on Monday they would forward to the government and parliament a model for revitalising dairy production in Osijek-Baranja County, highlighting the purchase of Meggle plants or a package of measures to rescue that industry.

It is necessary to examine if Meggle Croatia is interested in selling the company, including production plants, the coalition said in a press release. If so, it added, it is in the public interest to ensure the funds for the purchase via Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development loans.

If not, the government must come up with a package of measures to rescue the dairy industry in that region by organising contract farmers and workers as well as a company to succeed Meggle Croatia by reallocating EU funds, the coalition said.

One of the reasons why Meggle is relocating its plants outside the EU is that non-EU countries offer a lower cost of labour and do not have the same ecological standards as EU member states, notably regarding waste waters in the food industry, the coalition said.

Germany's Meggle is closing its plants in Osijek and laying off 160 workers. It is allegedly relocating to Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina due to a high cost of labour.

The coalition said that according to Eurostat, Croatia was at the bottom in the EU in terms of the total cost of labour and that taxes on labour stemmed from an unjust system and low taxes on other incomes.

The coalition said Meggle's decision indicated that Croatia should invest in its own production which should not be interested only in profit but also responsibility to the community as well as the development of the sector and the region of business.

The coalition said the closure of the Osijek plant would affect 340 contract farms whose main source of profit was the dairy industry.

Vuckovic: Ministry Is Monitoring Situation, Will Meet with Dairy Industry

ZAGREB, July 16, 2020 - The Ministry of Agriculture is following the situation in the dairy sector and will soon meet with representatives of leading dairy industries, Minister Marija Vuckovic said on Thursday, commenting on a decision by the Meggle company to phase out its production in Croatia by the end of the year.

After Meggle Croatia announced that it would phase out its production in Croatia, the ministry has been following the situation, and very soon it will meet with representatives of leading dairy industries to ensure the continuation of milk production at dairy farms that sell their milk to Meggle, the minister underlined.

According to her information, this concerns 340 dairy farms with a total production of 26 million kilograms of milk or 6% of the total quantity of milk that is delivered to Croatian dairies each year.

The Ministry of Agriculture will conduct all the necessary activities and invest all its efforts to preserve milk production at farms that are associated with Meggle, Vuckovic said.

The Croatian Agriculture Chamber (HPK) considers Meggle's decision to be yet another blow to local milk production.

"This decision will be a new blow to milk production in Croatia given that this sector has continually recorded a fall in milk production over the past 13 years. A large number of farmers have given up and Croatia's milk self-sufficiency has fallen to 40%," HPK underlined.

HPK said that it is important for the Agriculture Ministry to take action and find an alternative solution for 200 small farms that sold their milk to Meggle.

HPK also announced that it would call for an urgent meeting with the ministry and relevant institutions so that potential dairies take over buying milk from Meggle's associates in time before farmers give up and stop their production.
