It’s no surprise that Croatia is rich with unique history and artistic treasures. We are a country that is bustling with museums, galleries, and ancient attractions that will make any art aficionado, tourist, or historian’s dreams come true. Zagreb even has the most museums per capita than anywhere else in the world, and that’s something you feel in the air every time you visit. In order to try to narrow down your museum selections, we’re here to craft you a list of some of the most unique museums in Croatia - and trust us, this wasn't easy.

Museums in Split: The Mestrovic Gallery

Arguably Croatia's greatest ever sculptor, the name of Ivan Meštrović is synonymous with Split, and his presence is all over the city to this day.

Meštrović bought land in Marjan in the 1920s, which he intended for a summer house, and a villa was built between 1931 and 1939, designed by the master himself. He lived there from the summer of 1932 to 1941 when he left for Zagreb. In 1952, he donated it, along with 132 pieces of his work and other memorabilia to the State, and the Ivan Meštrović Gallery was founded, its mission the "protection, collection, expert and scholarly treatment and presentation of the museum holdings and popularization of Ivan Meštrović's works and name".

There are some 192 sculptures, 583 drawings, 4 paintings, 291 architectural plans (almost entirely made by Ivan Meštrović and dating between 1898 and 1961), and 2 furniture sets on display.
