The project has received 4.3 million HRK from EU funds just for the projection documentation, which needs to be completed by the end of next year.
The Meštrović Gallery will receive an underground multimedia exhibition hall, according to a project that will be done by the Split Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy, reports Dalmatinski Portal on August 25, 2017.
The entire hall, which will be located between the first and second staircase at the entrance to the gallery below the green area, will be funded by the EU through the Cohesion Fund for Cultural Valorisation of Cultural Heritage. 4.3 million HRK has been given from EU funds just for the projection documentation which needs to be completed by the end of next year. Once this phase is complete, the project will receive funding for its creation.
“There is still no solution, it is only being designed, and the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy has been selected. We are a protected cultural heritage site, and because of that all of the outsides have to remain unchanged. Therefore, this exhibition hall will be under the ground,” said the head of the Museum of Ivan Meštrović, Sandra Grčić Budimir.
As Budimir says, the museum lacks modern content which is attractive to the younger population. The gallery also lacks an exhibition space for guest exhibitions.
"We are hardly setting up exhibits because we are a museum of sculpture and it's hard to mix and interact Meštrović with somebody else. When we have a new space, then we will be able to have an exhibition by Rodin here, for example,” explains the manager.
Also, as Budimir explained:
“For schoolchildren, it is not enough for them to be shown sculptures - they need to be told a story, and they will get that with this exhibition hall.”
Since the Meštrović Gallery has been very popular recently as a wedding location, Budimir was asked whether the new hall would also serve as an area for wedding celebrations.
“There will be no weddings inside! What we offer is in the garden, not really inside the museum,” concluded the director.
