Festivals in Split
We will be updating and expanding the guide to the festivals of Split as they are announced, but here is a short list of festivals throughout the year.
February
Carnival: The Split Carnival (or Krnjeval) celebration is traditionally held in February with masked dance parties, salsa, Zumba, parades, weddings, fashion shows, raves, and even events for your dogs. Split Carnival usually begins at the beginning of February and ends on Fat Tuesday.
April
Croatia Boat Show: The Croatia Boat Show is held annually in the middle of April at Split’s West Riva. The fair features companies from all sectors of the nautical industry, including renowned domestic and foreign shipbuilders; large motor yachts, sailboats, catamarans, and inflatable and auxiliary boats; nautical equipment manufacturers, marine and outboard engines, electronics, fishing gear and charter companies. Automobile dealers also exhibit at the fair.
Days of Marulić - Croatian Theater Festival: The Days of Marulić is an annual festival of Croatian drama and theater that celebrates Croatia’s most renowned poet, Marko Marulić. The festival includes a program of performances and workshops and is usually held towards the end of April. The event is backed by the Ministry of Culture and is organized by the Croatian National Theater in Split.
May
International Flower Fair: The International Flower Fair has been held in Split at the beginning of May for almost 50 years. Typically held in Diocletian’s basement, the festival allows exhibitors to showcase their flower creations under a different theme each year.
Sveti Duje: Split’s Patron Saint Sveti Duje is celebrated each year on May 7th, though some 80 events are held in the city before and after to give Duje the party he deserves. From regattas to concerts and mass celebrations, Sv. Duje is known as the most exciting day in the City of Split.
Days of Diocletian (through September): Watch Split transform into the times of Roman emperor Diocletian with the Days of Diocletian manifestation! The event officially begins in the middle of May with the ‘Changing of the Guard’ ceremony at Peristyle, which continues every day at noon through September.
Vinski Podrum (Wine Cellar): At the end of May, Slobodna Dalmacija traditionally hosts Vinski Podrum in Diocletian's basement, which showcases the wineries and delicacies of Dalmatia and Croatia. Visitors can taste all the wine they’d like for a very reasonable price.
June
Mediterranean Film Festival: The Mediterranean Film Festival is one of the most popular cultural manifestations which has been recognized by more than 100,000 visitors. The festival showcases films from the Mediterranean region that have their regional or Croatian premiere and is held in the outdoor cinema of Bačvice Beach.
Days of Radunica: The City of Split celebrates one of the oldest neighborhoods in Split each June for Days of Radunica, a traditional folk festival which has been held for over two decades.
Split Festival (Splitski Festival): The Split Festival has lit up Prokurative for almost 60 years with the sounds of Croatia’s best artists and meticulously selected compositions.
July-August
Ultra Europe: Ultra Europe is a three-day electronic music festival held at Poljud Stadium that presents the world’s biggest DJ’s and attracts over 100,000 visitors from around the globe.
Split Summer Festival: The Split Summer Festival has been ongoing for over 60 years, showcasing the best of the arts in Split - from outdoor operas to art exhibitions, cultural concerts on the Riva, ballets, dramas, and more.
September
Nights of Diocletian: As part of the Days of Diocletian program, Nights of Diocletian takes places at the beginning of September around Split’s city streets and squares. During Nights of Diocletian, you can follow Diocletian’s carriage and legions on the Riva, watch fire dancing, listen to Roman music and catch ‘football games’ at Peristyle, and enjoy the cuisine of Ancient Rome in Diocletian’s basement!
Split Film Festival: The Split Film Festival is usually held from the middle of September and is known as one of the oldest international film and media events in Croatia. The Split Film Festival showcases film outside of the mainstream and has been held since 1996.
December
Advent in Split: Advent is traditionally held in Split every December to celebrate the holiday seasons. From holiday stalls selling mulled wine and sausages to various concerts, karaoke, and events for children, Split Advent is held all over the center of town, from the Riva to Dardin.
