14 March 2022 - Maybe you’re looking for something that’s not available locally, or perhaps the pandemic has changed the way you shop. Regardless, online stores have made purchasing more accessible, faster and at times, even more affordable compared to their brick and mortar counterparts. But how is online shopping in Croatia? Read on to find out more.
Let me rip the proverbial band-aid off first. Unfortunately American online shopping giant, Amazon, does not currently have a presence in Croatia (yet?). Whether this is advantageous or not, is highly debatable.
While you can still order from Amazon’s main site, the costs to ship everything across the Atlantic are eye-watering! You’ll also have to factor in import taxes that will be calculated by the local delivery company (e.g. Hrvatska Pošta, DHL, GLS), increasing prices even further.
Here's an example of how shipping costs more than the item itself. Image: Amazon.com
But not to worry, this doesn’t mean you are out of options when it comes to ordering from Amazon. Their online stores are available in neighboring European countries such as France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, albeit with caveats.
The most obvious disparities are that Amazon inventories in Europe are not as immense as the US site, and by nature of where they’re based, different types and brands of products are stocked. Another caveat is that not all items from these sites can be shipped to Croatia.
Here’s an example of an item that does not ship to Croatia. Image: Amazon.de
Still, this is a better alternative to the US-based site since shipping costs are significantly lower at €9.99 per order, for delivery within a week. Special services such as fast shipping (2-3 day deliveries) exist at a premium, whereas for the same order, my shipping quote went up to €27.
So, other than Amazon, what are your online shopping options in Croatia?
The answer is a number of smaller, more specialized online domestic and EU retailers who currently fill the gap in the market. Let me introduce you to some of my favorites. I am not affiliated with any of these sites but have used them in the past and am quite pleased with their services.
Fashion
While larger fashion chains such as Mango, Pull & Bear, Zara, and many more, have physical stores in Croatia, when it comes to fast fashion, I’ve personally found that ASOS has a wider selection, with quick and reliable shipping (around 3 days).
Similar to ASOS, Zalando has only recently extended its network to Croatia since July 2021. Already, this has proven to be another reliable source for all your wardrobe needs and as a plus, they offer free 30-day returns on all orders.
Between the two sites, you'll meet all your fashion needs. Image: Pexels.
Eyewear/Contact lenses
For those who require contact lenses or new prescription glasses during your time in Croatia, then bookmark adrialece.hr.
They stock a huge range of contact lenses, frames, and optical accessories (e.g. contact lens fluid, cases etc.), including multifocal and astigmatism prescriptions at very competitive prices.
Glasses and sunglasses are the top 10 items travelers tend to leave behind on the plane. Image: Pexels.
Shipping is free if you place an order above a certain amount, and I’ve never waited more than 5 days for my order to arrive by registered mail. Their customer service representatives are also highly responsive if there are any issues with your order or delivery.
Healthcare
For all my healthcare and supplement products, there are two online stores that I frequent every couple of months.
Vitamins and over-the-counter medications are usually ordered from this online pharmacy. For sports supplements such as protein powder, bars, or sports aids, myprotein is my go-to. Both have competitive prices, short delivery times, and a great selection for all your healthcare needs.
Skincare & cosmetics
Last Christmas, having left Christmas shopping to the last minute, I caved and ordered from Douglas, a leading German cosmetics and lifestyle brand that has been around in the early 19th century.
Image: Pexels.
While payment was slightly more complicated (the site did not take credit cards so I had to do a bank transfer), once the order was processed, I received my items via registered mail in 3 days. For health and beauty, I still recommend the Chewwies web site, and for healthier hair, glowing skin and stronger nails, there is this product. You can even grab a free sample pack.
Produce
A few grocery stores here such as Ribola and Konzum provide home deliveries via their websites but for more hard-to-find ingredients, I often order from this store.
While their main focus is on organic dry ingredients such as cereals and grains, the store also carries a variety of international spices and ingredients such as tofu, vegan meat, and curries. Delivery times are a standard 3-5 days and signing up for their membership guarantees lower prices and access to member-only deals.
Check out your local virtual market. Image: Virtualni pazar Split/Facebook.
For a truly local approach to online produce shopping, try joining Facebook groups such as this one. I’ve bought the best homemade cheeses, honey, vegetables, eggs, and more directly from farmers or producers on such sites.
Prices are more than reasonable (think €7 for a kilo of fresh cow’s cheese), although my downfall is having to occasionally converse in broken Croatian when the delivery goes awry!
Furniture/Household items
Finally, while apartments here tend to come furnished (lookout for another article that I’ll be doing on long-term rentals in Split!), you may need small household items such as towels and sheets to make it feel more like home.
IKEA currently only has a physical store in Zagreb, but if you live in other areas of Croatia, you can order online and have it delivered to a pick-up location (free) or to your home (for a fee of about €10). Another Scandinavian alternative to IKEA is the Danish brand, JYSK which has more stores dotted around Croatia and offers free deliveries that take about 5-10 days.
Buying online means you get to bypass getting lost in the maze of products at IKEA. Image: Pexels.
Local alternatives to these are stores such as mall.hr or Emmezeta, which also carry larger household appliances such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and stoves for those intending to stay longer term.
So if you’re a visitor, digital nomad, or long-term resident of Croatia, I hope you’ll find this list helpful in your online shopping needs!
November the 15th, 2021 - Online shopping has always been the favourite way of getting things done from the comfort of your own home in other parts of Europe, but until recently, more precisely until the coronavirus pandemic erupted, it lagged here in Croatia. Things have now dramatically changed and numerous big players are entering the Croatian e-commerce world.
As Novac/Jutarnji/Bernard Ivezic writes, the growth of Croatian e-commerce is fast heading towards numbers around the one billion euro mark next year, and as the hasty entry of large foreign players has flooded the Croatian online shopping market, an equally significant number of interesting shifts in the domestic market have taken place.
The Orbico Group, the largest domestic distributor and the second largest company in all of Croatia after Fortenova (formerly Agrokor) has entered the world of Croatian e-commerce. Orbico's web perfumery FABUspot, launched only this year, has already reached third place according to user ratings at the Web Retailer Award 2021, the largest e-commerce competition in the entire Adriatic region, which was organised by Ceneje.si on Friday in the Slovenian capital city of Ljubljana.
Data on the operations of FABUspot are encouraging, and the Croatian Orbico Group has doubled its revenue in the last five years alone. Last year, it reached an impressive 18.2 billion kuna, which put Orbico ahead of the INA Group, making it, as mentioned, the second largest domestic company after the gigantic Fortenova.
Another big surprise was prepared by Ivica Todoric's former flagship and the enterprise that was supposed to save the entire company, the Abracadabra web store, ie A007 Plus.
Abracadabra was declared by Fina as having the highest revenue growth of all major online retailers in Croatia, of 124.3 percent, a figure of 21.6 million kuna. For comparison, the fastest growing retailer in recent years was otherwise the popular Bazzar.hr, ie the company Prati me (Follow me). But in the pandemic-dominated year, it grew by 100.7 percent. Despite this welcome title, Abracadabra isn't actually operating positively. Last year, it increased its losses to 9 million kuna, and last year, Bazzar.hr increased its net profit by ten times to 522,105 kuna with revenues of 50.6 million kuna.
The third big surprise for the rapidly growing world of Croatian e-commerce is the new record set by eKupi (eBuy), the largest domestic online store of all. Back in 2020, the company within the M SAN Group increased its revenue by 25.9 percent, to 50 million kuna, or 374.3 million kuna. In addition, it generated a net profit of 4.5 million kuna.
The company eKupi, according to the assessment of the Polish Allegro, which entered the Croatian market with the acquisition of the Mall Group (of which Mall.hr is a part), is the largest domestic player on our market. Allegro estimated it to hold 11 percent of the market. The largest online retailer in Croatia is the Chinese Alibaba Group. The owner of AliExpress holds as much as 24 percent of the share in the Croatian market.
The great interest of foreign players for the Croatian market, especially those from Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Germany, can be seen from the selection of the Web Retailer Award 2021. Many of them are already present in Croatia, however, this choice also shows that smaller Croatian players are working on the development of their own respective web stores and are achieving continuously better results.
The company Smart Trade from Sesvete near Zagreb, whose web store Namjestaj.hr (Furniture.hr) was rated the best in the entire industry, last year increased its revenue by 9.7 percent, to 147.5 million kuna, with a doubling of its net profits to 4.6 million kuna. The company DDL Zagreb, whose pet store PetHomeShop.hr was rated the best in its industry, last year recorded revenue growth of 15.8 percent, to 54.9 million kuna.

ZAGREB, 18 June 2021 - As of 1 July tax reliefs are to be abolished in all EU member states for imported parcels with a value of more than HRK 160 (€22) while all parcels delivered from third countries will be taxable, and deliveries are expected to be slowed down, a press conference heard on Friday.
As of 1 July all parcels, regardless of their value, that come from third countries and are purchased online will be subject to VAT upon import, the Customs Administration and Croatian Post told the press conference.
The director of the Customs Administration, Mario Demirović, said that this is one of the most significant regulatory changes in Croatian Post's and the Custom Administration's business with regard to taxes on postal packages and VAT.
"We are absolutely prepared as far as the Customs Administration is concerned," said Demirović.
He underscored that all new costs have to be clearly marked for the end user and they have to be transparent and unambiguous. The Customs Administration will exclusively and only charge VAT, he added.
The head of Croatian Post's public relations office, Krešimir Domjančić, underscored that as of 1 July Croatian Post will introduce a fee to inspect the contents of packages coming from third countries.
Packages with a value of up to €150 will be charged HRK 18.50 while packages valued between €150 to 1,000 will be charged HRK 37. At the same time Croatian Post has abolished some other fees, so that as of 1 July fees for the majority of packages which are valued between €22 and 1,000 will be lower.

As Novac/Bernard Ivezic writes on the 15th of September, 2020, online shopping in Croatia has experienced a boom ever since lockdown, and the sale of fresh food over the Internet in the first half of this year jumped by as much as seven times, while the total online store 'capacities' in Croatia increased by 13.9 percent, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) announced.
Individually, Konzum within the Fortenova Group (formerly Agrokor) benefited the most. Konzum is a classic retailer who was among the first to create an online store through which it offered the purchase and delivery of fresh food, thanks to which it firmly positioned himself highly in that niche. In the meantime, the largest online retailer in Croatia, eKupi, part of the M SAN group, also entered the segment of online shopping in Croatia.
Tomislava Ravlic, the director of the Trade Department of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce (HGK), says that it is noticeable that consumers across Croatia have started to change their habits and that due to the pandemic, the trend of shopping online in Croatia has increased significantly.
"The first data shows us that in the month since the beginning of the pandemic, online shopping in Croatia has grown by up to 15 percent, which is a big jump when we already know that it has otherwise grown by about 12 percent annually. This trend continued in the following months, so online shopping in Croatia grew by an average of 13.9 percent in the first six months of 2020,'' explained Ravlic.
Ivan Siranovic, Director of Corporate Communications at Konzum, says that the store recorded significant growth in online retail and that this trend has continued.
"Interest in buying on Konzum's online store is still high, which is expected given that the situation with the coronavirus is still challenging and the fact that Konzum is the only retail chain in Croatia that has its own online store," said Siranovic.
According to eCommerce Croatia, an association that brings together more than 300 online stores across the Republic of Croatia, online sales make up only 6 percent of total domestic retail. Last year, goods worth 3.4 billion kuna, or 449 million euros, were sold online.
Marcel Majsan, president of eCommerce Croatia, says that most retailers members of the association recorded a significant increase in online sales compared to the year before.
"This year, due to the epidemic, there has been a large increase in new online shoppers, who have never shopped online before, and an increase in online food sales, as many family farms have realised they can't survive without online sales channels," noted Majsan.
He added that he therefore expects the share of online sales in the total domestic retail picture to increase further in the coming period. He pointed out that the measures of quarantine and self-isolation reduced the resistance to online shopping in Croatia, which was present primarily among the older generations.
"Our research has shown that the first purchase is the most important for gaining trust, so those retailers who provided quality customer service during the crisis will benefit the most," said Majsan.
Prior to the coronavirus era, travel, accommodation, entertainment tickets, as well as other products and services were mostly bought online, which couldn't be easily enjoyed in recent months due to restrictions on movement and gatherings. Now, clothes, shoes and home supplies are the primary items being bought online, and a new hit is the sale of fresh food.
Alan Slapar, who started the GoGreen brand, and who now works at Anytime Logistics to develop and digitise domestic food producers, says that there has been a sharp increase in online food sales in recent months.
"Thanks to that, there's a lot more talk about now in respect to the need to improve the logistics that accompanies online sales, and the last six months are proof that the market is ready for this method of distribution," added Slapar.
He explained that individually, family farms can make very few deliveries, and smaller stores, such as neighbourhood fruit shops that have turned to online sales, generally have a problem with adequate delivery.
"Many retailers are adjusting their sales channels online," concluded Ravlic.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 10th of April, 2020, Konzum has launched a new service called Pokupi (Pick up) that allows customers to pick up ordered products at Konzum stores. The service is one of Konzum's responses to the increased interest in online shopping as the coronavirus crisis continues to bite, which has in recent weeks led to a massive ten-fold increase in demand and a doubling of the amount of products ordered when compared to regular business.
The Pokupi service is now available in Zagreb at Super Konzum stores in Stenjevec, Gajnice, Spansko, Vrbani, Sarajevska ulica, Dankovečka ulica and Vukovarska ulica, and at Kukuljanov (Rijeka), in the cities of Split and Osijek, and the plan is to make the option available to more Konzum stores in all parts of Croatia.
The purchase process with Konzum's new Pokupi option is very simple. The buyer should first select the Pokupi option when visiting Konzum's online store and then select the products they want, followed by the selection of the location and time they will be picking up the ordered products and then the decision to pay online or when picking up the ordered products. At the agreed time, the buyer should come to the selected Konzum store and contact the security guard at the entrance, who will immediately direct them to the information desk or a specially marked cash register, where they will show their e-mail from Konzum confirming their order.
Konzum, as the only retail chain in Croatia to have its own online store, now enables even more buyers to order products from the comfort and safety of their own homes during the coronavirus crisis, and then pick them up without having to hang around at the store.
Despite the introduction of this excellent service, it is important to keep in mind that the assortment is available through the Pokupi service is less than what is available to customers who choose to have their shopping orders delivered to their home addresses
With Konzum's new Pokupi service, customers are still able to buy products online with delivery options in numerous cities across Croatia and with the Drive-in option in Vrbani in Zagreb.
Konzum notes that in addition to the increased hygiene and coronavirus-spread prevention measures implemented in all of their business units, it has introduced additional measures for its suppliers, who, after every delivery, must disinfect all the equipment they use, including the vehicle and themselves. All of the above requires the extra effort and the engagement of employees dealing with the online store system, whose work is organised in three shifts in order to receive and process as many customer orders as possible.
"We're doing our best to provide even more customers with the online shopping service for groceries, hygiene and household goods and other products they deem necessary. Our warehouses and stores are well equipped and ready to continue with the increased interest in online shopping, but we'd like to ask our customers for their understanding and patience when choosing a delivery or pickup date,'' stated Slavko Ledic of Konzum.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 20th of November, 2019, a tportal rreader found a note in his mailbox on Monday saying that his parcel was delivered to him on Friday, so he went to Croatian Post himself to find out what was really going on with his package.
The time before Christmas is the peak season for all courier services, and it's no different for Croatian Post (Hrvatska Pošta), through whose hands go the largest number of various packages and shipments ordered from online stores worldwide. Two months ago, Croatian Post was banned from charging for the delivery of smaller packages weighing less than two pounds, so, unfortunately many people noticed that their parcels were often not even delivered to their home addresses.
A tportal reader complained that a mailman left a message in his mailbox claiming that his parcel was waiting for him to come and pick it up at his local Croatian Post office, and the item in questioned was of course ordered from an online store, and getting certain large online stores to actually deliver to Croatia is already a task in itself. As previously stated, the reader found a note in his mailbox on Monday saying that the package was delivered to him on Friday, so he went to the Post Office to find out what was going on.
He was told, as he claims, that Croatian Post no longer delivers small parcels since their payment of 4.5 kuna was abolished and that the item was too large to be left in the mailbox, so the postman decided to leave a notice of attempted delivery only, but the reader claims he didn't even ring the doorbell.
The Post Office says that small ordinary parcels that have arrived from abroad and other ordinary parcels are, as a rule, delivered by inserting them into people's designated mailboxes.
''Before the cancellation of the payment (to Croatian Post), small packages were delivered personally to customers, but solely because of the obligation of payment. As this obligation no longer exists today, small parcels, like other ordinary shipments, are put into mailboxes - if the dimensions allow it,'' they explain.
It's worth mentioned that Croatian Post no longer has to charge an additional postage of 4.50 kuna for the delivery of small packages from abroad, as this was forbidden by HAKOM.
HAKOM, as explained, ruled that Croatian Post can no longer charge their fee for the delivery of small parcels. The good news for all citizens is that despite issues with simply not receiving parcels and mailmen not even ringing the door bell, Croatian Post cannot appeal this decision, although it may bring an administrative dispute before the High Administrative Court against HAKOM, but a possible lawsuit will not delay the enforcement of the ruling.
