June the 13th, 2022 - The USA swimming representation is preparing and training for the world championships at no less than the Rijeka Kantrida pools - and for the third time.

As Morski writes, the much loved Rijeka Kantrida pools, from where a gorgeous view of the Kvarner Bay can be seen, has caught the eye of the American swimming team, which arrived in Rijeka on the eve of the World Swimming Championships for their final preparations.

The USA national swimming team consists of 41 swimmers and 30 staff members, and preparations are underway at the Rijeka Kantrida Pools for the World Swimming Championships, which will be held in the Hungarian capital of Budapest from June the 8th to the 25th. The American national team chose the Rijeka Kantrida Pools for their preparations for the third time - they have already held their training camps in the City of Rijeka in both 2015 and 2017.

Olympic champions Ryan Murphey and Leah Smith, who are preparing at Rijeka's famous pools for the third time now, are also preparing for the World Championships. Ryan Murphey is one of the best backstroke swimmers in the world: he is a multiple-time Olympic winner (Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021) and a multiple winner of gold medals at world championships, while Leah Smtih is a multiple winner of Olympic and world medals.

''The Rijeka Kantrida Pools, the construction of which was completed ten years ago, were specifically planned with the aim of providing quality conditions for training and competitions of athletes, as well as the recreation of non professionals, and the location of the swimming pool complex near the Adriatic Sea makes it one of the most beautiful in the entire Mediterranean,'' Rijeka Mayor Marko Filipovic said at a press conference.

He stressed that the pool complex was primarily planned to provide quality conditions for people to play sport, swim and enjoy some recreation time, but also has its commercial note, especially in preparation for important international swimming competitions, which greatly contributes to the promotion of Rijeka and Croatia as a whole as tourist destinations.

In addition to the Americans, the Rijeka Kantrida Pools have so far been used by the national teams of Norway, Denmark and Austria, Japan, Estonia, Germany, Sweden, Latvia, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. In a recreational sense, the pools have been used by about 3.5 million users, or almost a thousand a day. The Singapore national team and the long-distance swimming team from Great Britain are also currently training in Rijeka. Rijeka as a city has continued to record some very good numbers in terms of water sports - in the first five months of this year, the city recorded 5% more reservations from different groups compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019.

June 11, 2022 - A look at the cost of living in Croatia according to the world's largest cost of living database - Numbeo.

According to Numbeo, Zadar is the most expensive city to live in Croatia. Namely, the average family of four needs 18,973.92 kuna to live without rent, and a single person needs 5,486.52 kuna for monthly expenses. It is 10.45 percent more expensive than Zagreb, and the rent in Zadar is, on average, 22.08 percent higher than in the capital, reports Dalmatinski Portal. 

Second on the list is Dubrovnik. The average family of four needs 18,453.15 kuna to live in the Adriatic pearl without rent, while the average monthly cost for a single person is 5,390 kuna without rent. It is 9.34 percent more expensive than Zagreb, but the rental price in Dubrovnik is on average 12.65 percent lower than in Zagreb.

In Zagreb, a family of four needs 16,769.81 kuna to live (or 4,874.39 kuna for a single person).

In Rijeka, a family of four needs 15,370.73 kuna to live (or 4,392.67 kuna for a single person). It is 6.81 percent cheaper than the Croatian capital, while the rental price is 22.30 percent lower than in Zagreb.

In Split, on the other hand, a family of four needs 15,073.86 for living expenses (or 4,312.83 for a single person), making Split 6.93 percent cheaper than Zagreb, while the rent is 10.77 percent lower than in Zagreb.

Of the larger cities, life seems to be the cheapest in Osijek. For example, a family of four needs 13,295.23 kuna to live (single 3,894.22 kuna without rent), while in Osijek, the cost of living is 15.24 percent lower than in Zagreb, and the rental price is lower by 42.65 percent.

According to Numbeo, Croatia is one of the most expensive countries in this part of Europe. Croatia is in 59th place in terms of price, while Serbia is in 94th place. Kosovo ranks 134th and Bosnia and Herzegovina 96th. The most expensive countries in the world are Bermuda, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Barbados.

June 5, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as a LOT Croatia expansion is on the horizon due to an increasing number of Polish tourists booking a Croatian holiday. 

Ex Yu Aviation reports that Polish airline LOT will expand its presence in Croatia beyond the eight routes between Poland and Croatia this summer. LOT currently serves five cities in Croatia with 170,000 seats on sale between Poland and Croatia this season alone. Namely, from Warsaw to Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, and Rijeka, from Krakow to Split, from Rzeszow to Zadar and from Zielona Gora to Rijeka. The Polish airline's main competitors between Poland and Croatia are Wizz Air and Ryanair.

“This summer we will fly 28 times per week between Poland and Croatia. Most Polish nationals come to Croatia by car. However, I hope that we will jointly develop solutions so that we can save our compatriots a car trip and that everyone can fly with LOT. Last year, we transported over 33,000 Poles to Croatia, and we hope for a much better result this year. I also hope that Croats will visit Poland in greater numbers," said the carrier’s CEO, Rafał Milczarski.  

"Croatia is becoming more and more popular among our passengers each year and is becoming of interest for travelers outside of Warsaw as well. As we continue to increase our offer, both Zagreb and Croatia as a whole are becoming popular for short weekend breaks as well," he added.

“Our performance in Croatia is the result of consistent work by our team as well as the growing popularity of Croatia in Poland and the increasing number of Poles who want to come to Croatia within two hours," said LOT Board Member for Commercial Affairs, Michal Fijoł.  

Ex Yu Aviation adds that Zagreb Airport has seen a growing demand from secondary cities in Poland. Before the pandemic, Zagreb saw a lot of traffic from Poland’s second-largest city Krakow, with over 5,000 people traveling between the two cities in 2019 that year on a single itinerary. The cities of Gdansk, Wroclaw, Poznan and Katowice followed.

LOT has bases in Krakow and Katowice, meaning Zagreb could be served with Embraer E170, E175, and the Dash 8 turboprop which can seat 70-80 passengers.

May 31, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as 10 Transavia Croatia lines will operate next month!

Well-known low-cost airline Transavia is planning 10 international flights to five Croatian airports in France and the Netherlands in June, reports Croatian Aviation. 

Namely, the subsidiary of the Air France - KLM group will operate on 10 scheduled flights to 5 Croatian airports - Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Split, and Dubrovnik.

One line has been announced from Rotterdam to Pula Airport, which will be in traffic three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Transavia mainly uses 737-700 KLM aircraft on this line.

Transavia has reduced the number of flights offered to Rijeka Airport in June. On the regular line between Rijeka and Eindhoven in June, only one flight on Sundays is available for booking.

According to Zadar, Transavia has announced two lines, from Paris and Rotterdam. From Orly Airport, planes will fly to Zadar on Tuesdays and Saturdays, while flights from Rotterdam are announced on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Split Airport has announced three Transavia flights for June from Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Paris.

Transavia will operate between Rotterdam and Split 5 times a week in June (every day except Tuesdays and Fridays), between Amsterdam and Split 3 times a week (Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays), and between Paris and Split 4 times a week (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays). Transavia will offer almost 19 thousand seats in June to and from Split Airport. 

Dubrovnik Airport has a line from Paris 5 times a week, from Rotterdam 3 times a week, and from Nantes 2 times a week.

This airline will offer more than 45,000 seats on its B737-700 and B737-800 aircraft on 10 international routes to the mentioned airports. A total of up to 30 flights per week were announced in June, with the airline leaving the possibility of increasing the number of weekly operations in the second half of June, depending on the movement of bookings.

In June this year, the Croatian national airline Croatia Airlines announced 42 international routes from five Croatian airports - Rijeka, Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb, and Osijek. Croatian Aviation brings you a list of lines with the number of weekly operations.

In June this year, Croatia Airlines is increasing the number of international routes, mainly from its base at Split Airport, from where the aircraft will take off to new international destinations. Nevertheless, most weekly operations are available from or to Zagreb International Airport, where the airline has its main base.

The only international line of Croatia Airlines from Rijeka is the seasonal route to Munich, which remains in traffic three times a week this summer. Almost 2,000 seats are available on this line in June.

From Osijek to:
Munich, 2 times a week, Mondays and Fridays.

Osijek Airport has only one flight less per week than Rijeka, also to Munich. The line remains in traffic on Mondays and Fridays and there are slightly more than 1,200 seats available in the next month. This is also the only international line from or to Osijek Airport.

In total, Croatia Airlines will offer almost 190,000 seats to the 5 mentioned Croatian airports in June, exclusively on regular international routes. There are more than 200 weekly flights on 42 scheduled international flights.

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has modified its flight schedule for June. Next month, the well-known airline will offer almost 80 scheduled flights to and from six Croatian airports, reports Croatian Aviation. 

Ryanair plans to operate 79 international routes to 6 Croatian airports in June to Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, and Zagreb, with based aircraft and crew in Zagreb and Zadar.

Zadar Airport is definitely the number one airport in Croatia for Ryanair. Aircraft will fly to more than 45 destinations and will offer over 160,000 seats in more than 450 rotations. Certain lines were already scheduled to be in operation, but the carrier postponed the start of operations on several lines for commercial reasons until the second half of June.

From Split to:
Dublin, four times a week, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Dublin is the only Ryanair destination from Split. 17 rotations are planned for June, with Ryanair offering more than 6,000 seats.

From Dubrovnik to:
Vienna, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays,

Dublin, four times a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays (34),

On the two mentioned lines, Ryanair will offer almost 10,000 seats to and from Dubrovnik Airport in June.

In June, Ryanair will operate a total of 79 international routes to and from Croatian airports, and according to current data, the number of routes should increase in July. In June alone, the Irish airline will offer more than 285,000 seats to and from Croatian airports, with Zadar Airport and Zagreb International Airport having the largest share in the number of seats (and consequently the line).

May 25, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Air Serbia flights to Croatia have been significantly boosted from Belgrade this summer. 

Serbian national airline Air Serbia will launch two seasonal routes to Split and Dubrovnik by the end of May, and flights from Belgrade to Pula, Rijeka, and Zadar by mid-June, reports Croatian Aviation.

Namely, Air Serbia plans to operate to six Croatian airports this summer, with only the route to Zagreb being year-round.

Already this Thursday, May 26, two lines will start operating from Belgrade to Split and Dubrovnik. These are also the two most popular of Air Serbia lines to and from Croatia.

The line between Belgrade and Split will operate from May 26, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, and the number of weekly operations will gradually increase. Namely, first on June 6, an additional flight will be introduced on Mondays, and then on June 24 with a flight on Fridays, which will allow Air Serbia to operate between the two cities four times a week, using ATR72, A319, and A320 aircraft.

The line between Dubrovnik and Belgrade will start operating on the same day. Currently, two flights a week have been announced, also on Thursdays and Sundays, with an additional flight available on Mondays from June 13. ATR72 and A319 aircraft have also been announced on this route.

From mid-June, there will be lines from Belgrade to Pula, Rijeka, and Zadar, and everything will start around the same period. Namely, the line between Belgrade and Zadar will start with traffic from June 14 with two flights a week, a day later (June 15), the line between Belgrade and Rijeka will begin, and from June 16, flights between Belgrade and Pula will launch. 

All three mentioned lines have announced two flights a week in June with ATR72 aircraft. The line to Zadar will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays, to Rijeka on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and to Pula on Thursdays and Sundays.

The only year-round Air Serbia route between Belgrade and Zagreb will also have more flights in June than the current schedule. Namely, on Mondays and Fridays, the airline will offer two flights a day between the two cities, while one daily flight is available on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

In June, Air Serbia will operate on 6 mentioned routes to Croatia with a total of 20 weekly flights, which is a significant increase, especially compared to the same period last year and the year before. The number of flights will continue to grow in the peak summer season.

May 24, 2022 - A Hajduk fan zone will be set up on the Split Riva with a large LED screen for the Croatian Cup final against Rijeka on Thursday at Poljud. 

Due to the exceptional interest of the fans for the SuperSport Croatian Football Cup final, HNK Hajduk decided in cooperation with its partners and sponsors, Radio Dalmatia, Karlovačko, and SuperSport, to organize a fan zone which will be located on the Split Riva on Thursday.

The sports and entertainment event called "I can't do anything else but love him..." starts on Thursday at 11 am. Hajduk invites all fans to visit the fan zone and have fun with an exciting entertainment program that includes music performers, surprise guests, food, an amusement park, attractive gifts, and prizes that attendees can win by participating.

The SuperSport Croatian Football Cup final between Rijeka and Hajduk starts at 7 pm. 

"For all those who failed to get a ticket for the Croatian Cup final, a joint viewing was organized on a large LED screen that will be placed at the bottom of the Riva.

The youngest will be delighted by our official mascot Rico, who will hang out with children from 11 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 6:30 pm.

Join us on the Riva, enjoy the spectacle, and support Hajduk in the final of the Croatian Football Cup," concluded Hajduk in their announcement. 

Hajduk finished the 2021/22 HT First League in second place with 72 points. While they fell short of the title this year, they still have a chance to win a trophy this season in the Croatian Cup final against Rijeka on Thursday, May 26. Hajduk and Rijeka will meet at Poljud at 19:00. The last Croatian Cup title Hajduk won was in 2013. They lost to Dinamo in their last Cup final in 2018. Dinamo won the Croatian Cup last season, while Rijeka was the winner in the two seasons prior.

May 22, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Condor Rijeka and Dubrovnik flights resumed this weekend, and Smartwings canceled Prague-Dubrovnik flights for the summer. 

On May 21, the German leisure airline Condor resumed traffic to two Croatian airports - Rijeka and Dubrovnik, reports Croatian Aviation. Condor thus resumed traffic to Rijeka and Dubrovnik on four international lines from Dusseldorf and Frankfurt.

Rijeka Airport

Rijeka Airport is already connected to Frankfurt by Lufthansa, which currently operates on this route once a week, every Saturday. On May 25, the airline will introduce a second weekly flight, on Wednesdays.

In addition to Lufthansa, Condor will operate on this route once a week, also on Saturdays, until the end of September, so Rijeka Airport has a regular connection with Frankfurt three times a week. On the first Condor flight from Frankfurt, 103 passengers arrived in Rijeka, while 33 of them traveled from Rijeka.

Condor also launched the announced line between Rijeka and Dusseldorf, which will run twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. 146 passengers arrived in Rijeka on the first Condor flight, while 22 of them traveled from Kvarner to Düsseldorf. Rijeka is connected to Düsseldorf by a regular Eurowings line, which launched yesterday. It should also be mentioned that Eurowings is introducing a line from Stuttgart, and today from Berlin and Hamburg to Rijeka.

Dubrovnik Airport

Condor resumed traffic to Dubrovnik Airport, also with lines from Dusseldorf and Frankfurt, and both will be in traffic once a week, every Saturday.

Dubrovnik is connected to Frankfurt by regular lines of Croatia Airlines and Lufthansa, while the line between Dubrovnik and Dusseldorf, in addition to Condor, is also operated by Eurowings.

Furthermore, Croatian Aviation reports that Czech airline Smartwings has withdrawn all flights previously announced for this summer season on the seasonal route between Prague and Dubrovnik. The airline will operate exclusively to Split.

The Prague-Dubrovnik line was supposed to operate daily during the peak season. 

Smartwings will operate between Prague and Split this summer and the line is already in traffic. The number of weekly flights will gradually increase from four to seven flights a week, and flights between the two cities are planned until October 9 this year.

May 22, 2022 - The 36th and final round of the Croatian First League was held on May 20 and 21. Dinamo already clinched the title last weekend, though the season ended with the Dinamo-Hajduk derby at Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb. Here is our HNL round 36 recap. 

Istra 1961 v. Slaven Belupo (3:1)

Istra and Belupo opened the 36th round on Friday, May 20, in Pula. 

While the first half went without goals, Beljo put Istra ahead in the 48th minute for 1:0. Bande made it 2:0 six minutes later. Balgojevic was shown his second yellow in the 71st minute, forcing Istra to play with a man down for the remainder of the match. Zvonarek made it 2:1 in the 76th minute, but Beljo scored again in the 4th minute of stoppage time for the final 3:1.

Istra ended the season in 9th place with 31 points, while Belupo finished in 7th with 36. 

Lokomotiva v. Sibenik (2:1)

Lokomotiva and Sibenik met in Zagreb on Friday, May 20. Kulenovic scored for 1:0 in the 6th minute before Maric made it 2:0 in the 29th. Delic scored for 2:1 in the 41st minute, which was the final score. 

Lokomotiva ended the season in 5th place with 49 points, while Sibenik finished in 8th with 32. 

Rijeka v. Dragovoljac (1:0)

Rijeka and Dragovoljac met on Saturday, May 21 at Rujevica. 

The only goal of the match came in the 2nd minute when Obregon scored for 1:0. 

Rijeka ended the season in 4th place with 65 points, while Dragovoljac will be relegated from the First League, finishing last with 19 points. 

Gorica v. Osijek (1:1)

Gorica and Osijek met in Velika Gorica on Saturday, May 21.

Jovicic put Gorica ahead in the 30th minute for 1:0 at the half. Bartolec equalized for 1:1 in the 68th which was the final score. 

Gorica ended the season in 6th place with 45 points, while Osijek finished in 3rd with 69. 

Dinamo v. Hajduk (3:1)

Dinamo and Hajduk closed out the 36th round and the 2021/22 season at Maksimir on Saturday, May 21. 

While Dinamo already clinched the title in the previous round, the Eternal Derby between these two clubs is always played for pride. Around 2,000 Hajduk fans were meant to be in attendance, though they remained outside the stadium in protest of a new Makrsimir rule regarding banners. 

Petkovic put Dinamo ahead for 1:0 in the 53rd minute. Livaja's goal was called back by VAR in the 68th minute, though he came back to equalize in the 4th minute of stoppage time for 1:1. Dinamo ended up scoring two goals in the final two minutes - with Orsic and Baturina making it 3:1. 

Dinamo ended the season in 1st place with 79 points, while Hajduk finished in 2nd with 72.
