Strossmayer square turns into a playing field this Saturday
Croatia has become a sedentary nation: we spend up to fifteen hours a day sitting, seven hours lying down or sleeping, leaving only two active hours in a day. There's alarming data showing that children and adolescents are becoming less and less physically active: 92% of girls under the age of fifteen don't get enough physical exercise.
To try and get people away from their smartphone screens, the Sports Association of Zagreb is organising an event on Saturday, May 13th at Strossmayer square. From 10 AM to 2 PM, representatives of multiple sports clubs will challenge participating citizens to face them in friendly matches: you can try your hand in basketball, football, handball, table tennis, rowing, judo, karate, taekwondo, bowling... Whatever sport you can think of, you'll probably find an athlete ready for a duel. The players of GNK Dinamo, Cibona, Cedevita and other famous Zagreb clubs will be there to motivate people to get some exercise and have a lot of fun along the way.
The name of the event, "Sportska špica subotom", roughly translates to "Saturday sports rush hour", alluding to the other famous špica in Zagreb: streets around Cvjetni square that are packed with people having coffee on Saturday mornings. Instead of spending a few hours gossiping and hanging around just to be seen, it might be better to drop by Strossmayer square this time.
This is the first time this event is taking place, but it's already been announced that similar manifestations might be happening in near future. Participation on Saturday is free, let's hope the weather will serve us as well – get off the couch, come meet the athletes, and move!
