British Investors Going Ahead with Obonjan Project but in Smaller Volumes

By 30 November 2015

Instead of 3000, we can expect 1500 guests per week on this island in the Šibenik archipelago

According to the statement released by NPR Consulting on November 27, 2015, preparatory cleaning works will commence on the island of Obonjan in the Šibenik archipelago. This marks the beginning of works for the project by British Sound Cloud, national tourist operator CMT and management company Gratiosus.

British investors are planning to develop exclusive tourism services on Obonjan, however, their plans have slightly changed after they performed a thorough inspection of the island: “Our plans, or our volumes to be more exact, will be slightly lower in 2016 than we previously expected. Direct reason for this is the very bad state of existing infrastructure on the island. We do plan to fulfill our quote of 1500 guests per week, which, from the sales point of view, is still excellent. We will build on the existing infrastructure in the years to come, add more accommodation units and services and that will directly influence the increase of our total capacity from season to season” – NPR Consulting press release states.

At a press conference, which was held back in June 2015, British investors stated that at least 140 000 overnight stays will be achieved on Obonjan in 2016 which would bring a €10 million income to the local economy. They also assured the public that their spatial interventions and construction works will not in any way disrupt the natural beauty of the island, they announced large investments in advertising and accommodation capacities. Exact numbers were not mentioned since the state of existing objects on the island is a much worse than previously thought.

Mayor of Šibenik Željko Burić says that the objects are in very bad shape and the infrastructure is in ruins because for years nothing was done on the island:

- After 8 months of negotiations, next year we will finally welcome first gusts on Obonjan and that is the only thing that matters. Years of wear and tear have left its toll on the island and the current state is far from ideal but together with our partners we will prevail and nothing can stop the development of tourism on Obonjan – Burić commented.
