Eurostat: Internet users in Croatia have the most security problems in the EU

By 8 February 2016

How secure is your Internet in Croatia?

Reports suggest that around a quarter of Internet users in the European Union faced security related issues in the past year, such as viruses, trojans or unexplained data loss, but most of such problems within the EU were encountered by Croatian citizens, according to information released on February 8, 2016 by Eurostat.

During 2015, 25 percent of Internet users located all over the EU encountered certain security problems (viruses, misuse of personal data, mild financial losses etc). This means that 75 percent of users did not have any problems.

Countries where security problems are the most common appear to be Croatia (41 percent), Hungary (39 percent), Portugal (36 percent), Malta (34 percent), France (33 percent). The countries with the least problems seemed to be: Czech Republic (10 percent), Netherlands (11 percent), Slovakia (13 percent) and Ireland (14 percent).

Data suggests that last year, 21 percent of users in the EU had a problem with a virus or some other type of cyber infection. Most problems were from here in Croatia, with a worrying 41 percent, closely followed by Hungary and Portugal. This is a huge rise since data shown from 2010.

This being said, Croatian citizens are not among the first when it comes to avoiding some Internet services for safety reasons. In Romania, Sweden and Portugal, data suggests that a large percentage of people do not dare to buy goods or services over the Internet due to safety and security concerns, while only 14 percent of Croatians avoid online shopping. The Germans, Portuguese and Italians are noted for avoiding Internet Banking apps and facilities, while only six percent of Croats do the same.

While it seems Croats are not as concerned about their online security as other people from around the EU, Eurostat data suggests there is adequate reason to worry, with many people in Croatia claiming to avoid the use of wireless internet outside of their own homes.
