The Largest Solar Power Plant in Croatia to Be Built on Vis

By 13 September 2015

Putting the endless Dalmatian sunshine to good use.

The largest solar power plant in Croatia, with the power of two megawatts and the cost of three million euros, should soon be built on the island of Vis by Končar-Obnovljivi Izvori Energije company, announced the representatives of the company and the town of Vis reports Poslovni.hr on September 13, 2015.

"We are finalizing the necessary documentation in order to obtain building permits. The start date for the construction will be determined based on this and other conditions being fulfilled", said Branko Zajec, general manager of the company.

He pointed out that the project is based on Croatian technology and knowhow, and the energy produced will not be consumed at the location of production but it will rather be delivered to the electricity network. "All the existing solar power plants in Croatia produce less power than the future power plant on Vis. It can be built in just one year. During the construction of this three million euros worth investment, we plan to engage local businesses and individuals, and the local population will later also operate the plant", said Zajec.

The mayor of Vis Ivo Radica explained that the idea of building a solar power plant on the island was born six years ago, and the representatives of Končar-Obnovljivi Izvori Energije have warmly embraced it. At the time, the spatial plan of the island of Vis and the Split-Dalmatia County did not exist, but Radica said that they have prepared everything in the meantime and can now obtain all the necessary permits on the basis of the county spatial plan.

"The construction of the plant will mean a lot for Vis, because we already have our own water sources, and with this project we will get our own source of energy as well. The power plant would meet the energy needs of Vis for seven months of a year. The land on which the plant will be built is state-owned, and access road will be five kilometres in length", said Radica. The solar power plant will be built at the Griževa Glavica site, about 3.6 kilometres south-west of the town of Vis and about 4.8 kilometres east of Komiža.
