Library Jazz Bar in Split? Marcvs Marvlvs Welcomes You

Have you heard of the library bar in Split? A standard for many large cities, Split’s very own library bar is one in the honor of Marko Marulić, the father of Croatian literature.

Located in the heart Diocletian’s palace, it is thought to be that Marko Marulić was born in this house that now is home to Split’s first library bar. The building retains many of its 15th century features, and is located within Diocletian's palace on Papalićeva street. The renovation was under the eyes of conservationists to ensure that the original 15th century architecture remained in tact. When you enter the bar, the genuine stone floor is very much in place, and the authentic beams on the ceiling have been left untouched.

Owner Agustin Sanchez (who is Argentine but of Croatian descent) is a poet and artist himself. As you would expect, Sanchez has amassed a collection of Marulić’s works, and often has literature evenings with readings of both Croatian and international poetry to his poised and composed audiences.

The book shelves in the bar were ordered from Padova, Marulić’s former school. One shelf is dedicated to Marulić's works, with a plethora of works in various languages as well. At this library bar, you are encouraged to donate books you may no longer need, and to trade with others to keep a constant rotation of new reading material. You can enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of whiskey or wine, Cuban cigars are for sale, and the sound of jazz is always filling the room in the background.

The bar organizes thematic literature nights dedicated to poets and writers, as well as poetry readings for those who are feeling brave. The perfect environment for the poetry enthusiasts and jazz connoisseurs, won’t you visit for a drink?
