People’s Coalition Leaders Meet to Discuss Electoral Strategy

By 25 July 2016

Opposition parties are getting ready for elections.

Leaders of parties gathered in the People’s Coalition met on Monday to discuss the strategy for the forthcoming parliamentary elections, reports n1info.com on July 25, 2016.

Ahead of the meeting, HNS president Ivan Vrdoljak said that they would talk about how to make Croatia a better country and that their focus would be on improving the living standards, rather than on political opponents. Asked about the election strategy of the People’s Coalition, Vrdoljak pointed out that discussions about candidate lists were over and that now, less than two months before the election, they will start talking “about the lives of citizens, which is more important than political opponents”.

In addition to the host, SDP president Zoran Milanović, the meeting was attended by Vrdoljak and HSS president Krešo Beljak, while HSU president Silvano Hrelja was not present. According to information from SDP, Milanović and Hrelja will meet on Tuesday in Istria.

Journalists asked Vrdoljak to comment on information that former directors of the Croatian Forests public company were seeking payment of million-kuna bonuses which were included in their contracts by former Agriculture Minister Tihomir Jakovina (SDP). Vrdoljak said he did not have enough information about the issue.

After the meeting ended, Beljak and Vrdoljak spoke with reporters. “We discussed what we needed to do, what was good over the past five years, and what wasn’t. We also discussed the role of HSS in all of this. We will not talk about the other parties, but we will focus on structural reforms”, said Beljak.

“We deliberately do not want to discuss so-called scandals. The political bickering is something that citizens do not support. I want Croatia to be a country of equal opportunities, curricular reform, and to bring another IBM to Croatia. You will receive the electoral manifesto of the People’s Coalition as early as next week. That speaks volumes about our seriousness”, said Vrdoljak.

He also commented on the fact that one of the most popular ministers from the previous government, Anka Mrak Taritaš, was positioned at eighth place on a candidate list. “We will have preferential votes. I think that most people agree that Anka was the best Construction Minister since the independence of Croatia. Vote for Anka personally and for the People’s Coalition”, said Vrdoljak.
