Tramontana Kicks Off at Kino Bačvice this Saturday: An Interview with Headliners "The Bambi Molesters"

By 28 July 2016

This Saturday, July 30, Kino Bačvice will open its doors to the first edition of "Tramontana", a new summer concert series happening in Split.

This new concert series will run across four Saturdays this summer, presenting live music loving enthusiasts to sixteen artists from across the region in one of the most popular and unique outdoor music venues in Split.

The doors for the first Tramontana concert will open at 17h, beginning with Dubrovnik composition Feredon at 18h. Following Feredon will be The Fogsellers from Šibenik, combining electronic music with live instruments and tripped out visuals. Zagreb’s popular Porin winning Pavel will lead you into the evening, with surf music aficionados The Bambi Molesters headlining the show.

We caught up with Dalibor Pavičić, guitarist in The Bambi Molesters, ahead of their headling Tramontana performance. Here is what he had to say.

How did the name “The Bambi Molesters” come about?: About the name. Well, it certainly started as a drunk joke regarding our friend who fell in love with the girl nick-named Bambi. At that point we obviously didn't have any ambitions to have a professional career as musicians because we would certainly have chosen a different name. Dinko and I were into a comic called "Hate" at that time, and the name sounded like it could be the name of the band from the Hate comic. As years go by I definitely have mixed feeling regarding the name itself but it is too late for a change, although we did think of a name change in the past. So, to cut a long story short, it is about the girl and not the animal...and the part about molesting is actually a joke.

What is one of the favorite bands you have toured with?: Favorite band that we've toured with...We did two shows with The Cramps so I would say The Cramps, although REM comes to mind as well. Both bands treated us as friends and were more than generous in letting us share the stage with them.

Where do you draw your influences from for the band?: As for influences, in the beginning it was 60's garage, and surf instrumentals etc., but I think we still continue to be influenced. It is changing day by day. Soul, afro music, jazz, soundtracks, bossa nova...I believe it shows somehow in our music since it is not only about traditional surf instro that is favored by US bands. We are much more open to other styles. At least I hope we are.

What is one of the favorite shows you have played with The Bambi Molesters?: Favorite show? Actually it was in Split, Bačvice more than 10 years ago when we toured Croatia with Scott McCaughey. There were about 2000 people and we were playing a mixed set of The Bambi Molesters + The Strange + backing Scott as Minus 5 (his band). We ended on the beach waiting for sunrise and brought some of the people from audience to hotel breakfast ? Fun times.

What is your favorite thing about Split?: Favorite thing about Split....I think it has changed a lot during last 20 years. For the better. Since we started to play gigs in Split we always felt welcomed. I like relaxed atmosphere.

What is one of your favorite venues in Croatia?: Favorite venue in Croatia...There are only few regular venues here. Not sure if there is a favorite one. It used to be KSET but we haven’t played there for a long time. We'll do a gig there in October so we will check if it still has this vibe…

What are the band's plans for the future?: There will probably be a new album in the future. We are kind of slow since we all have regular jobs and families but I'm sure we'll have a new album next year. We don't have big ambitions or financial expectations. We have all come to the point where we don't have to prove anything. Now it is pure fun.

Tickets can be purchased in advance through www.croatia-tickets.com or at the local Split bar To Je To (Ul. Tome Nigera 2). On the day of the concert, tickets will be available for purchase at the box office at Kino Bačvice from 16h.
