Ana Konjuh And Ivo Karlović In The 1/8 Finals of US Open, Čilić Out

By 4 September 2016

Ana Konjuh beat Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, Karlović defeated Jared Donaldson 6-4, 7-6, 6-3, and Marin Čilić lost to Jack Sock 4-6, 3-6, 3-6

Two Croatian players reached the second week of the US Open on September 3. 2016. Ana Konjuh managed to get the best result of her career, as she qualified for her first Grand Slam 1/8 finals ever, beating the American player Varvara Lepchenko in straight sets.

In the next round, she will face the fourth-seeded Polish player Agnieszka Radwanska, and she has a score to settle with her, as Radwanska beat her in Wimbledon couple months ago. That defeat was unfortunate for the Croatian youngster, as she suffered the injury in the third set, with the result leveled at seven games each, and the Polish got the win, leaving Ana in tears.

Ivo Karlović is a nightmare for American players at the Us Open, as he beat one more home player in straight sets. His last victim was a young player who came out of the qualifiers to reach the third round, Jared Donaldson, but the Croatian was too good for him at the Court 17 of the Flushing Meadows.

Karlović will face the sixth-seeded Japanese Kei Nishikori in the 1/8 finals, and as he will have the day rest before that match, hopefully, his hurting shoulder will allow him to serve more than just 14 aces he managed today.

Marin Čilić lost in straight sets to the American Jack Sock, so he did not manage to fight back for the defeat he suffered to the same opponent in USA – Croatia Davis Cup match.
