International Volunteers Came Out in an Effort to Clean up Fortress Gripe

By 1 October 2016

The voluntary action "Clean Fortress Gripe" was successfully carried out today from 9h-11h this morning, while the sun helped 50 volunteers clean up inside and on the tops of the Gripe walls, reports Dalmacija News.

The volunteers included not just locals but 18 year old Ann Hechler from Germany, Maise Gonzales Nunes from Spain, and Lukas Hulkas from Finland who came to volunteer through the association “HELP”.

The most difficult task today was surely cleaning up the narrow ravine on the east side of the building, a place where there was a large quantity of waste, syringes, and cockroaches from many of the drug addicts that gather around the area.

Among the volunteers were GK Lučac-Manuš led by President Tanja Bělohradský, members of HDZ youth, war veterans, employees from the National Archives, the Maritime Museum and many residents who live near Gripe came to help with their small children.

Mountaineering skills using modern mountaineering techniques were used on the upper parts of external walls, and all of the waste will be collected on Monday.

At the end of all the hard work, organizers treated the volunteers with juices, homemade cakes and pizzas.

The next voluntary action will be held on Saturday, October 8, from 9h-11h on the southern side of the Gripe walls, at the neglected playground.
