Commemorative Coin to Be Issued for 25th Anniversary of Croatia’s Independence

Special commemorative coin for an important anniversary.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Croatian independence which was officially proclaimed on 8 October 1991, the Croatian National Bank (HNB) will issue a special commemorative coin worth 25 kuna, reports N1 on October 4, 2016.

A special commission was formed to access which of the proposed designs would be the most suitable. The commission made the final decision taking into account the results of a survey in which citizens were able to assess three proposal. As much as 50 percent of respondents voted for the proposal submitted by sculptor Damir Mataušić. With the intention of involving the public to in the selection process, the Croatian National Bank on 12 July published a poll on its website and invited all those interested to take part in selection of proposal which they considered to be the most appropriate to celebrate this important anniversary.

In the period up to 20 August, as many as 10,188 people took part in the survey, which is about 0.24 percent of the total population of Croatia. Considering that last year a survey organized by the European Central Bank to select the design of coins minted in honour of 30 years of the flag of the European Union was responded by about 100,000 people, which is approximately 0.03 percent of the population of the European Union, the response of Croatian citizens can be considered to be very high.

Judging by the comments of survey participants, it is noticeable that the public was positively surprised by the fact that they could take part in the selection process. In addition to citizens living in Croatia, Croatian citizens living abroad, as well as tourists who happened to be in Croatia during the survey, also had the opportunity to express their opinion.

So far, the Croatian National Bank has issued 11 editions of special 25 kuna commemorative coins for various occasions. They have a numismatic value, but can also be used as legal means of payment.
