Marin Čilić won the final of the ATP tournament in Basel, defeating Japan's Kei Nishikori with 6:1, 7:6 (5).
The 28-year-old Croatian tennis player, who has also won the US Open by defeating Kei Nishikori in the final, has now repeated the same fate in the final of the ATP tournament in Basel. This is Čilić’s 16th tournament win of his career, and the third largest after the aforementioned US Open in 2014 and the Masters in Cincinnati he won this year.
"I knew it was going to be important for me to start well," said Čilić. "Obviously it was a big match for me. Being in the final of a 500 tournament against someone like Kei, who has been playing good tennis during the week, I knew it was going to be important to have energy straight away. I was playing well in the first set, with my shotmaking and I was serving smart," reports ATP.
This win also strengthens Čilić’s position to secure bids for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at the end of the season, boosting his point total to 3,090 in the Emirates ATP Race To London.
"This was a good week, I played another final. But Marin today played very good tennis,” added Nishikori.
ATP released Čilić’s point which was a brilliant shot from the baseline in an awkward position with which it broke through Nishikori. You can see the point below.
