The tourist season on the island of Lokrum has never been better!
As Dubrovnik Press Portal reports on the 15th of September, 2017, the good news from Lokrum is that the uninhabited island has allegedly never seen a better tourist season. Mario Tevšić, the Director of Lokrum's Reserve spoke to the local Dubrovnik portal in more detail.
"In regard to security, the season has passed without any problems or incidents, regarding the fires and in every other sense, even though the summer was exceptionally dry. This year was climatologically extreme but we've had no problems and no damage. Dry weather is risky and problematic for the nature, but it has enabled us to keep going continuously throughout the summer without a break,'' stated a satisfied Tevšić.
''The price [to get to Lokrum from the Old Port in Dubrovnik] has increased from 100 to 120 kuna, and the number of visitors increased by 20% from the beginning of the year, so the financial indicators are very good.''
Tevsic stated that the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities are working on Fort Royal, preparing project documentation that is currently in the phase of consensus with conservation guidelines. The Restoration Institute of Dubrovnik is also reconstructing the Benedictine monastery, and by the end of the season there will be scaffolding around the monastery, which symbolically suggests that some work will start there.
''It is likely that they'll get to work in 2018. We'll work on some infrastructure projects this winter. We'll start, and maybe finish up a network of hydrants. It's not a huge job, but it's relatively sluggish because it goes through the woods. With this, Lokrum's fire safety facilities will be raised to the highest possible level as far as the infrastructure is concerned. Parallel to this, we will put all existing sanitary nodes or septic tanks out of use, and we will incorporate three modern pits. Although that doesn't appear to be added value for visitors, as far as infrastructure is concerned, it's a big deal.'' concluded Mario Tevšić.
