Sweet Tradition: When Folklore Meets Cake

By 21 November 2017

How does one resist the urge to preserve this cake forever?

You might know the word manjgura as the name of a renowned agency owned by the Croatian PR whizz Krešimir Macan, but the term actually has a somewhat different origin.

In Dubrovnik dialect, manjgura refers to a young girl – a lass, as the Scottish would put it. An endearing version of a manjgura came to life last weekend in Dubrovnik, with a local pastry chef named Dubravka Falkoni Matić creating a stunning cake for a wedding in Čilipi.

The Radović family ordered a wedding cake, but the chef’s creation exceeded everyone’s expectations. At the reception held in Hotel Konavle, the wedding party was presented with a cake so beautiful and intricately designed, it was almost a pity to cut into it: Matić came up with an idea to envelop the body of the cake in a proper traditional folklore costume originating from the Konavle area. The shirt, the skirt, the belt, the embroidered vest and a quaint little cap – it’s all there, entirely edible, skillfully crafted in marzipan with a lot of chocolate, Nutella and nuts on the inside.

See the photos of the impressive delicious creation below:
