Thousands Bid Farewell to Oliver in Split

The beloved singer has started his journey to the final resting place on the island of Korčula.

More than ten thousand citizens of Split have gathered on the city waterfront on Tuesday evening to bid farewell to the beloved singer Oliver Dragojević who died on Sunday. A catamaran will now take his body to Vela Luka on the island of Korčula where he will be buried on Wednesday evening.

After this morning’s official commemoration, the highly-emotional ceremonies began shortly before 7 pm at the St. Francis Church in Split, where a mass was said. Afterward, his coffin was carried across the waterfront to the pier in front of the Port Authority building, where it was transferred to the specially commissioned catamaran.

During the procession, the gathered thousands applauded and the chimes from the city cathedral could be heard. The coffin was accompanied by family members, as well as Oliver friends and colleagues. An a cappella singing group was heard singing some of his best-known songs.

Members of Torcida, the fans of the Hajduk football club, lit flares in Oliver’s honour.

At 7.50 pm, the catamaran started its voyage to Korčula, accompanied by dozens of boats, large and small, who have gathered in the city port. During the voyage, it is expected that people of the islands of Šolta, Brač and Hvar will also pay their respects to Oliver, both from the shore and from the boats.
