Alcohol and Tobacco Prices Have Risen by More Than 100% in Last 20 Years

By 5 September 2018

While the price of alcohol and cigarettes have shot up, costs relating to the healthcare service have increased alongside them.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 5th of September, 2018, over the last two decades, Croatia has seen a 45 percent rise in prices, and the biggest price hike from the year 2000 to date has been felt in the cost of medicine, medical and hospital services, a jump of as much as 123 percent.

Eurostat data also shows that alcohol and tobacco prices have grown by 105.4 percent over the same time period. Housing costs, water, electricity, and gas grew by 775 percent also, as Novi list writes.

Despite these more than considerable price hikes that have taken place over the last twenty years within the country, the Republic of Croatia (rather surprisingly to many) doesn't take first place when it comes to cost increases in the European Union.

Prices appear to have risen the most significantly in Romania, with increases in various sectors of a massive 257 percent, and the least in Germany, which has seen increases of just 28.6 percent.

Although Croatia isn't at the very top of the list, the overall growth in prices in Croatia from the year 2000 to today is indeed above the EU average, which currently stands at 36.5 percent.

When it comes to the jump in the cost of various healthcare services, Croatia is ranked in fifth place in all of Europe.
