By 5 September 2018

The competition was fierce.

A beach bar on the island of Rab has found an unusual way to attract guests who have dogs. It has organised a swimming contest for dogs and their owners. The Monty Underdog was held for the second year in a row, and this year the competition venue was the Banjol beach on the island of Rab, reports Jutarnji List on September 5, 2018.

The eighteen owners and their pets jumped from a ship anchored about a hundred metres from the shore, swam to the shore and ran back to the bar.

The first place was won by Ervina Krišković-Pahljina and her poodle Boni. It was a major surprise. “My dog loves to swim, but when I saw all those large dogs in great shape on the start line, I thought Boni had no chance. But in the end, it turned out she was faster than everyone else,” the proud owner said.

After the swim, the pets had more competitive events waiting for them – who would eat the soy and milk ice cream quicker, as well as drink non-alcoholic beer made especially for the dogs. The best ice cream eater award was taken by Lun from Zagreb, while Nala from Rab was the fastest in drinking beer.

The owner of the beach bar, Ruby Montanari-Knez, said that the goal of the competition is to raise awareness about the importance of pets in our lives. It is also a good opportunity for the community to come together.

“If you participate in such things, that is always good for the community. People come, become active, move around, get together,” she said. “This was a wonderful event where the final result was not so important. The priority is on socializing, having a laugh and spreading positive energy.”
