Karepovac One Year Later: Split Landfill Began Rehabilitation On this Day in 2017 (Video)

By 22 November 2018

Rehabilitation began on the infamous Split landfill, Karepovac, on November 22, 2017.

On November 22, 2017, the day that marked the beginning of the Karepovac landfill rehabilitation, Split mayor Andro Krstulović Opara said:

“Today we are taking a big step towards the future of the city. I believe we will work well with Eurco and G.T. Trade and all others who will work on this important job for Split, and the 19 towns and municipalities of our county that have been depositing their waste here in the last fifty years, and complete this story within the agreed deadline. It will be a time of tribulations and challenges, but there is a good team working on the project."

One year, later, the appearance of Karepovac has completely changed. The former eyesore of Split and its surroundings today resembles a sanitized and tidied surface, which has displaced and transformed about one million cubic meters of waste.

The contract for the rehabilitation of Karepovac was signed on October 22, 2018.

On that day this year, the famous Split landfill was visited by Dubravko Ponoš, director of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, Split mayor Andro Krstulović Opara, and County prefect Blaženko Boban.

“We are waiting to complete the landfill surfaces, drainage ducts, pools for wastewater, and a compound with a pier. The southern, northern and eastern parts are completed, we still have 0.5% of the old waste, or one micro-location. Additionally, we are also working on the access road to the roof. We believe that by the summer we will be finished, and if time is on our side, maybe even earlier,” Tonšić said in October.

The Split mayor said that he would be delighted when Karepovac is a green oasis and a recreational area and announced that the amount of waste that other cities and municipalities dump at the landfill site after rehabilitation would be limited.
